• Ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī said:
*❝Then, after the year 700H, when the Tatār arrived at the borders of the country and the people remained in great distress, they believed that the Egyptian army had abandoned them. The Shaykh rode and travelled by land to the Egyptian army in seven days and entered Cairo on the eighth day, which was Monday, the eleventh of Jumādā al-Awwal. The students of the Egyptians also entered. The Sulṭān al-Mālik al-Nāṣir gathered with the pillars of the state, so he urged them to jihād, recited āyāt and aḥādīth to them, and informed them of the rewards that Allāh had prepared for the Mujāhidīn. They awakened and their determination strengthened, and they apologised to him for their return from the rain and cold they had experienced for twenty days. The soldiers were called for, and their determination was strengthened and they were honoured. The dignitaries repeated visits to him. In this year, Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd met with him and heard his words. After the end of the session, he was asked about him, and he said: “He is a man of memorisation.” They asked him why he did not speak to him, and he said: “This is a man who loves to talk, and I love silence.” And al-Dhahabī informed me about the Shaykh that Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd told him after hearing his words: “I did not think that Allāh would create someone like you.”❞*
ثمَّ بعد ذَلِك بعام سنة سَبْعمِائة لما قدم التتار إلى أطْراف البِلاد وبَقِي الخلق فِي شدَّة عَظِيمَة وغلب على ظنهم أن عَسْكَر مصر قد تخلوا عَن الشأم ركب الشَّيْخ وسار على البَرِيد إلى الجَيْش المصْرِيّ فِي سَبْعَة أيّام ودخل القاهِرَة فِي اليَوْم الثّامِن يَوْم الإثْنَيْنِ حادي عشر جمادي الأولى وأطلاب المصريين داخِلَة وقد دخل السُّلْطان الملك النّاصِر فاجْتمع بأركان الدولة واستصرخ بهم وحضهم على الجِهاد وتلا عَلَيْهِم الآيات والأحادِيث وأخْبرهمْ بِما أعد الله للمجاهدين من الثَّواب فاستفاقوا وقويت هممهم وأبدوا لَهُ العذر فِي رجوعهم مِمّا قاسوا من المَطَر والبرد مُنْذُ عشْرين ونُودِيَ بالغزاة وقوى العَزْم وعظموه وأكرموه وتردد الأعْيان إلى زيارته واجْتمعَ بِهِ فِي هَذِه السّنة الشَّيْخ تَقِيّ الدّين بن دَقِيق العِيد وسمع كَلامه وذكر أنهم سَألُوهُ بعد انْقِضاء المجْلس فَقالَ هُوَ رجل حفظَة قيل لَهُ فَهَلا تَكَلَّمت مَعَه فَقالَ هَذا رجل يحب الكَلام وأنا أحب السُّكُوت ولَقَد أخْبرنِي الذَّهَبِيّ عَن الشَّيْخ أنه أخبرهُ أن ابْن دَقِيق العِيد قالَ لَهُ بعد سَماع كَلامه ما كنت أظن أن الله بقى يخلق مثلك

• Ibn Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Dimashaqī said:
*❝When the Tartār arrived, may Allāh forsake them, in the year 700H, to the outskirts of the Syrian lands, the Egyptian armies had already gone out to fight them. Then the rain and the intensity of the cold became too strong for them, so they returned heading towards Egypt. Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn Ibn Taymīyyah was informed of this and rode on a postal carriage from Damascus to catch up with the Sultan before he entered Egypt. However, the army had already preceded him and entered Cairo. Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn Ibn Taymīyyah entered Cairo on the eighth day after leaving Damascus, and his entry coincided with the entry of some soldiers into Cairo on Monday, the eleventh of Jumādā al-Awwal in the year 700H. The notables of the city, including Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd, gathered with him and listened to his words. After hearing what he had to say, Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd said to him: “I never thought that Allāh would continue to create someone like you.” When the session with Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn Ibn Taymīyyah was over, someone asked Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd: “Why he did not speak with him, and he replied, “He is a man who loves to talk, and I love to be silent.” Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd also said: “When I met with Ibn Taymīyyah, I saw a man with all of knowledge between his eyes, taking what he wanted from it and leaving what he did not.”❞*
لما قدم التتار خذلهم الله تَعالى سنة سَبْعمِائة إلى أطْراف البِلاد الشامية وكانَت العساكر المصرية قد خرجت لقتالهم ثمَّ قوي عَلَيْهِم المَطَر وشدَّة البرد فَرَجَعُوا متوجهين إلى مصر فَبلغ [ذَلِك] الشَّيْخ تَقِيّ الدّين ابْن تَيْمِية فَركب على البَرِيد من دمشق وساق ليلحق السُّلْطان قبل دُخُوله إلى مصر فسبقه الجَيْش ودخل إلى القاهِرَة فَدَخلَها الشَّيْخ تَقِيّ الدّين ابْن تَيْمِية فِي اليَوْم الثّامِن من خُرُوجه من دمشق وكانَ دُخُوله مَعَ دُخُول بعض العساكر إلى القاهِرَة يَوْم الِاثْنَيْنِ حادي عشر جُمادى الاولى سنة سَبْعمِائة فاجْتمع بالشيخ اعيان البَلَد ومِنهُم تَقِيّ الدّين ابْن دَقِيق العِيد فَسمع كَلام الشَّيْخ تَقِيّ الدّين ابْن تَيْمِية وقالَ لَهُ بعد سَماع كَلامه ما كنت أظن أن الله تَعالى بَقِي يخلق مثلك وسُئِلَ الشَّيْخ تَقِيّ الدّين ابْن دَقِيق العِيد بعد انْقِضاء ذَلِك المجْلس عَن الشَّيْخ تَقِيّ الدّين ابْن تَيْمِية فَقالَ هُوَ رجل حفظَة فَقيل لَهُ فَهَلا تَكَلَّمت مَعَه فَقالَ هَذا رجل يحب الكَلام وأنا أحب السُّكُوت وقالَ الشَّيْخ تَقِيّ الدّين ابْن دَقِيق العِيد أيْضا لما اجْتمعت بِابْن تَيْمِية رَأيْت رجلا العُلُوم كلها بَين عَيْنَيْهِ يَأْخُذ مِنها ما يُرِيد ويدع ما يُرِيد
