This song is the most underrated work of genuis ever it brought tears to my eyes when first listened to it. And i couldnt even tell you why, it just stirs something deep down in my soul. I wasnt sure of this version but it is growing on me quickly now.
It's beautiful how cool and straight-forward smith is, the song is so great and loaded with emotion, very difficult to sing when you know and respect the poet.
Best live version I've seen. When she tried it at the first Bowery Ballroom CD Release show, she didn't have the lyric sheet and flubbed a lot of it. She blamed the band member who got married and took the lyric sheet on honeymoon. :)
Patti, I've been a jerseygrrl fan of yours since the 70's...say you at asbury park. You're the soundtrack to my life, it seems. Love & thanks to you Patti
I haven't figured out the editing function yet, obviously. I appreciate so many people loving this song; I've always really liked it, but wasn't that sure about others' opinions. It is drenched in emotion, and Patti certainly understands that.
I really do know how to spell "Dylan." Anyway, I love both of them, and they both sing great, in their own ways. People do vary a lot about this stuff -- I love Patti Smith's voice and find her sexy as he'll, including when she was 60, during this concert,
Great Song From A Great Dylan Album. (Get Remix/Remastered CD Only.) This Sounds Better Than The Covers Disc Version She Did. That Was A Disappointing album, Considering She Did Such A Pissah "Wicked Messenger," On, "Gone Again." I DID Get To See/Hear Patti & Bob Duet On, "Dark Eyes," In Boston. VERY MOVING. Sean X.
Well well, what a disgusting comments! Let's go back to the civilization guys. Patti did this one live also in Paradiso in june 2007, I still can't forget it, so strong, so beautiful! Grateful I am for her as an artist!
@m0vita I cant even remember my original comment. Patti is a fine singer and she does this classic track justice, but on the other hand if you shouted "Gee Up" in her ear she'd probably gallop away!
no it's not a joke, bob dylan is undamental out of order, he might be great in the us but totally out of synch outside, okay he's outstanding writing song's, but he'd better let other's perform them... still i love bob thoug,..
It's beautiful how cool and straight-forward smith is, the song is so great and loaded with emotion, very difficult to sing when you know and respect the poet.
The very talented Ms. Smith is one of the very, very few performing artists that can do this underrated masterpiece justice. Bravo Patti !

A real class song by Patti! Beautiful voice.

A beautiful Bob Dylan song. Excellent performance by Patti Smith.
Beautiful song
Amaizing... awesome!!!
Love PATTI
I agree.Despite what I often have read from the critics about Street Legal,it has always been a favorite of mine and I still pull it out for a listen.

Many thanks to you and the others for the comments. You make it all worthwhile!

I also saw her doing this one in Paradiso, Amsterdam. What can I say: just GREAT!!!! Thanks for posting it.
Street legal is probably my favourite Dylan Album, and this song and "Is your love in vain" are two of my favourite songs on it.
Pattis Supersong! Ich liebe ihn!!!
this is a very good song, and dylan is the most wonderfull songer of the world.
@amerikaprincess. I was there in the Gray Hall. At the end of the song she said herself that it was her best live version.
Das Lied hat mich ins Leben zurückgeholt!
I love this song. Street Legal is a great album to work out to. Patti Smith is really cool too so I am glad she did this.
Yes - This song is on their latest album called "twelve" (which is all covers).

god I love this version. Only patti could pull this one off. It is a tough song to remake

Patti Smith showing why she's the Female Icon to end all Female Icons. No one can touch her.She sounds as good now as she did all those decades ago

Our old queen will rule forever!
Bob himself made the comment "Patti is the best" He would be proud! :)

you are right my friend. Bob's original version is miles away... this one is a bit dead... Dimitris from Greece
3 out of 10, feeling pretty generous tonight.
Pattis tha shit
@m0vita I cant even remember my original comment.

@blujufirst fandom and fanatic are not exactly the same. However you clearly like him over Smith. No faulting that the man's a ledgend.
make the fellas wait
Why is she singing the verses in the wrong order?
Desperate's the word!
ja fed koncert,,
i miss a lil the 3 female background-singer, but even without sososo well done...
changes
Really very beautiful, odd phrasing, but a beautiful song
@yancybutler I admire Dylans body of work immensley
but I am not a "Fanatic" for Dylan or anything else for that matter.
@blujufirst total lack of objectivity there from your fandom.
Schöner geht es nicht!!!!!!!!!!
no it's not a joke, bob dylan is undamental out of order, he might be great in the us but totally out of synch outside, okay he's outstanding writing song's, but he'd better let other's perform them... still i love bob thoug,..
@blujufirst Patti is way prettier!
im not talkin 'bout singing but version. The music of Pattie makes me trans...
it doesnt metter.... it is better than Dylan. (soryyyyy Dylan :P )
Sorry Dorak, but not only is Bob a better singer then Patti. He is also better looking! lol
Sorry, but IMO she killer the song.Dylan is GOD.
Nothing compared to dylan
Patti Smith does nothing for me.
I first heard about her in the late 70s.
I did not like her "style" then and I don't like it now.
Boring.
It's beautiful how cool and straight-forward smith is, the song is so great and loaded with emotion, very difficult to sing when you know and respect the poet.
