It's possible that someone before had attempted to use compressed air to clear the clog in the sunroof drain and popped it off - at least that's what's common in other makes - given it's GM my gut tells me they used material that was less expensive as a lot of things are built to a "price point"

i was surprised too, but i found a few threads online where they are shrinking from repeated hot / cold cycles... I dont know to be honest.
