I'm looking forward to doing this mod to my IC-745. Thanks for posting this!
Great mod Buddy! I bought my 745 new in 1983, knowing it did not have AM transmit and at the time I used to hang out on 3885 and a ten meter AM weekly net. I had a Johnson 500 so it was not a big deal. I thought it was strange not having AM on it but figured maybe it was to frustrate CBers from getting one. But this is a great radio and I loaded it up with all the options and of course purchased the service manual as well and that aided me in troubleshooting a few issues that popped up over the years. Your series on this radio has me missing mine, of which I did have 2.
I really enjoyed this video and watched it from beginning to end. Great Sunday night educational entertainment. 50 years ago it was the Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday nights, now it is The Radio Shop taking its place. Proof that things do get better and better.
Thanks for sharing your story. I agree the 75 is an outstanding rig. I could not get by without mine. Wow been many years since I watched Ed, we are getting oil! Thanks for the kind words and glad you liked the video.
Nice to know about putting an ic745 on am. Now it's an all mode rig.
Thanks, It will be great having this to try on AM now.
This will be very helpful to owners of this rig. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to so carefully produce this video. The world is a better place because of your efforts.
Maybe consider using a pointer instead of your finger to make things a little clearer.
Thanks, I have many more videos on this rig.
Good idea on the pointer
You made that look like child's play, real good instructions and camera work was excellent. Well done.
Thanks, It was fairly easy. Appreciate the comment.
Great to see that IC-745 working on AM. There are some AM nets on 80 meters. Would like to get on there with them but I need more space here for a 80 meter dipole. Will add that to my wish list. Thanks again Buddy
Thanks Lyle. Have you looked at a shorten version of the dipole for 80?
Great to see you got it working on AM. Probably one of two possible reasons why they didn't enable AM. As someone else said to prevent chicken banders from using it. The other may have been to force people to buy a more expensive model that did TX on AM.
You just may be right on that Mike. Was not a hard to do mod, just needed my original service manual so I could find the parts better. But we made it through.
You call them "chicken banders" but you work on them? Hypocrite much??
Excellent job, Buddy. I find it rather odd that ICOM never put in that simple circuitry. It just doesn't sound like ICOM. They produce good quality gear. Anyway, another great video from the master! Thanks for sharing it with us. 73 DE K7RMJ Frank
It is a very nice radio, think it was some issues with the FCC at the time. Thanks for watching Frank
LOL,”if you do so and blow your radio up you do so at your own risk” Love it buddy. Hard to believe they put it out with an indicator light for AM that doesn’t function.
LOL, yeah so much for being an all mode eh. Works pretty good now. Thanks for watching.
Great video Buddy, that's a real improvement to that ICOM. It's strange that ICOM didn't have that radio working on AM. Good job
Dale kg7ssb
Thanks Dale. The rig is now complete.
Nice mod buddy you work like a surgeon 👨⚕️ Big thumbs up 73
Thank you allan.
Brilliant. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy your abilities. Thank you buddy
Hook up Longmire antenna to ic745
You never cease to amaze me with your skills. I build QRP rigs, much simpler!
Thanks for the kind words Ron
Hey Buddy! Haven't been keeping up with you to much lately, hope all is well my friend. Man, GREAT video! I did this mod about 12 years ago myself! Man, this would have been helpful then lol! Great job!
Hi Justin, doing great and hope you are. No worries my friend. I have been putting this mod off because I thought there was more to it. Pretty easy to do. Thanks for stopping in.
Nice work Buddy and for sure not a quickie makes you wonder why in the first place dropping it out or at least making a True Note to there Mode Features, but again with the other users in CB that could be a reason. Thanks for the extra efforts on the video shots very well explain.73/GB Ole Friend
Appreciate that comment Dale. Was really simple mod. I think you may be right on why they left it out. Take care my friend.
yep, 100 left out to discourage chicken/free banders..
Superb Buddy, as usual perfection 73 Paul de M0BSW
Thank you Paul. This was an interesting modification. Now to test out the audio. Thanks for stopping in.
That was a lot of work Buddy. Well done. I am trying to think of why Icom didn't enable the AM mode. Obviously it was originally designed to do so. Maybe the bean counters got in at the last minute. Hard to believe that they put a function on the front panel that didn't exist and sent the radio to market anyway. Glad to see that you are getting some use out of the old Heathkit power meter. 73 Doug.
I think it was an FCC issue back then. I really like that power meter. Nice little unit. Thanks for watching my friend.
Find your videos so interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks John
I'm still waiting to see some swan videos show how to neutralize tubes and some tips for helping with drift etc. Thanks K4ATR This is a great Video BTW
Hi Dean. I am actually working on a Swan right now. Will be changing the final tube and neutralizing it. We will take a look at the drift also
Hello Buddy
Thank you for this Excellent series of videos with clear and informative explanation of the issues and how to resolve!
I have a 745 with strange issues:
-20m is “missing “ from the band stack….it jumps to 4 Mhz instead.
All other bands are fine.
- No receive on CW but Tx is OK
-No receive on AM
-No Tx on FM but Rx is fine
-Tx and Rx is fine on SSB except for the missing 20m
Any suggestion where to start looking at what might be causing these faults?
Many thanks for any guidance
73
Steve
Steve. Interesting issues you have. Click the show more tabs to follow the links and give me an email about this. I will see if I can help you out with the problems.
Hello hope you have a safe new year. You really are a nice person thanks for all you do.
Thank you very much for the kind words. And a safe New year to you.
Thanks for the video...What camera did you use for this?...it does really good closeups...Thanks!
Thanks Gary, This was shot with the Sony HDR-CX240
Superb Thank you
Nice work as usual Buddy...bet you get lots more requests for AM Mod/RAM Board fixes! 73 - Dino KL0S
Thanks Dino. This was a fun modification. Still have a few more tricks up my sleeve on the 745.
I am learning quite a bit from watching your videos. Many, many thanks ! de KM2U
Thanks for this video learned a lot and very helpful video glad people like you share ham radio education your awesome. 73s' Mike wb7qxu
I really learned quite a bit from this video. I was wondering if when you are pointing to components, you could use something small like a plastic swizzle stick. Magnified, your fingers are large and it's hard to see what you're pointing to. Very nice video.
Thanks Jeff, and I appreciate that feed back. I bought a bunch of chop sticks just for doing that. And always forget to use them. I am going to paint one yellow with a red tip and place it in eye sight on the bench. Thanks again.
Cool fix chap nice one 73's
Thanks Drew
Not a snip, and clip is certainly an understatment! I'm not familiar with the 745. In your opinion is the mod worth it? Does it to your knowledge make a nice sounding AM (once the mod is performed) transciever? Great job Buddy. Thanks for sharing.
It is a bit of work to get the AM transmit going. The receiver sounds pretty good even with the filters it has installed. According to Paul the TX AM audio sounds decent. Looks ok on the scope but will be doing another video on the audio and power mod. Thanks for the question, I believe it is well worth the effort.
did you just overlap the component ends and solder or do you J-hook bend them and crimp tight before? I like j-hooking for added vibration proofing. some people tend to beat/hammer and abuse things :)
I used the j-hook method. Dont want them breaking apart.
I figured so, being an old school repairman with tricks of the past.
Good Job Buddy well done!!
Thanks Aaron
Like your PCB holder
Thanks Darren, this holder works great for boards
May do this to mine when I get it running again.
Neat job, buddy!
Thanks James
nice job buddy. i personally think the am was left out to keep the 11meter idiots away from this radio
i'm interested on how this rig performs b4 you mod any further, i havent seen anything in the comments so far so i shall ask.
does this modify you doing throw off any tune & alignment?
I think they were influenced by the FCC at the time of this radio, this really made it harder to be used on cb. Since we are not dealing with tuned circuits and only moving voltages around there is not additional tuning or alignment require. Thanks Scott
ah ok cool. i look forward to more on this series :-) any chance we will see more on the ft-101 series you started?
73' k7sce
Yes, there will be plenty more on the 101 as time allows.
Yeah, ok, but cbers still use hf stuff on ssb.
Oh my gawd! Don't let the stiffs over at qrz know you did this mod to this radio. They believe that's a sin against god. They will flame you until hell freezes over.
HA! I seldom post there anymore. But the video was posted on QRZ. AM mod to this radio is great . Dont forget there are AM frequencies for ham radio. :)
Thank You
Thanks for watching.
i thought there was a simple "snip" mod to allow transmit everywhere when in general coverage mode or am I remembering wrongly ;)
There is, Ir is called the "mars mod". But has nothing to do with AM mode transmit in this radio since it is missing the circuit to enable AM transmit. These are two entirely different mods.
I have an ic-735 that was normal until the beginning of the year and recently started to have a problem with the reception. Some days were back to normal. The meter indicates a lot of signal, but I don't hear the stations or I hear very low. I disassembled the radio and found a lot of cold solder. After redoing the welds and assembling the equipment, the reception did not return to normal. Is there a specific component that I can test?
Looks good Buddy. :)
Thanks Sue.
Hi, can you help? The power switch on my IC-745 failed. I unsoldered it - but STUPIDLY forgot to make a note of what wires went where. There's a medium thickness red wire that goes to the fuse, then there's also a medium thickness black wire. There are also 3 thin red wires, and I remember 2 going to one of the switch terminals. Can anyone HELP? Preferably with a picture. Charles M0DED in UK
You make it look to easy! When are u getting on AM? De WA2SQQ
Hi Bob, it was not hard at all. I have been so busy working on rigs have not really had the time to. But will put this on AM and see how it goes.
I have a Icom 745 how can I get in touch with you so I can get mine done
I can't wait I have went swan crazy I actually talk to the guy who owns the swan your doing I been messing with radios for years myself I have something I can't fix which is my wavetek 3001 signal generator works fine on higher frequencies but not lower. Would love to send to you if you would be interested in looking at it.
I like the old Swan radios. I have worked on a few of the 3001. Some of the parts inside are now unobtainable. I would not mind looking at it for you.
Very interesting video but the background noise makes it tough to listen the whole way through.
Will do this mod soon.... don't delete the video LOL!!!!!
100% with attempt #2 , skipped my wrong turn :)
can you do the mod on my 745
all but am mode transmit ;)
