Untangling the mysteries of the octopus

- The octopus is one of the most bizarre life forms on Earth - one of the smartest, most interesting, and most alien. It can camouflage itself in a flash, squeeze its entire body through a one-inch hole, and use their brains (yes, it has nine of them) to think and play. Correspondent Chip Reid visits scientists at New England Aquarium in Boston, and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and talks with Sy Montgomery, author of "The Soul of an Octopus," about these curious creatures. (This story was originally broadcast on January 12, 2020.)

It’s a shame that an animal so beautiful and intelligent has such a short lifespan. 😢
I get a huge smile on my face every time I see them. One of my favorite animals.
They get a huge frown every time they see one of us. We are one of the least favorite animals on the planet.
It’s Showing Humanity Get Along or Else !!!
Me too - Monisola!
Shape shifters. Extraordinary creatures! Don’t eat them, squid, or cuttlefish.
The Octopus is def one of my favorite creatures on Earth!
We need to protect these animals. I have no doubt that if we continue our harmful treatment of our planet then these creatures could become endangered or cease to exist.
Best way to protect many animals is to protect their habitat.
I read that book last year. It really was enthralling.
I've always been interested in octopuses; this was great! As a neuroscientist, I think I'll research their nervous system & look into all those brains.
Can you do it without harming them & keeping them in captivity the rest of their short lives?
What a fascinating creature (we're very fortunate to get to know one another). The book looks very interesting via cover and Author! How can people not like the Octopus? RIP Rudie, 3-5 years longevity is way too short. Maybe we can help them live longer, as they have helped us in many other areas.
My Octopus Teacher on Netflix is
highly recommended💜
If an octopus has a soul, it shouldn’t be kept in an aquarium. I’m sorry you spent your life I’d captivity, Ruby.
They are so beautiful and fascinating. Please people, dont eat them.
Shut up snowflake
With a name like Kleeamd, you sound delicious yourself.
I love the octopus...they are so smart!
Fascinating animal! We have so much yet to discover and learn.
I loved this book "the soul of an Octopus "
It’s very sad that these creatures are kept in small fish aquariums!
3-5 years could be almost an eternity to them.
A lovely creature immortalized in song by Sir Richard Starkey, AKA Ringo Starr.🐙🐙🐙🐙
The only octopus you have to watch out for are the one that "Blue ring octopus"! "ARE ANIMALS HAVE SOULS" !!!
I wish our president was as smart.
@Brody Massey
More like 15-20....
So it's not "octopi" plural? 😂 Certainly far more intelligent than most of us!
Apparently both are valid but octopi is not a latin rooted version as octopus is latin
Wow!
This summer I did a theme on the ocean and its creatures tha live there with 4 year olds. They were fascinated by the octopus. We watched so many videos. It was fascinating. I just loved this video just wish you would leave them on the ocean
Thanks Jett! I love to see them underwater,
Oh how I would love to have mini brains! What a help that would be.
Here because of “My teacher, the Octopus”/Netflix 😀
One day, I will have an aquarium in my home and I'll have an octopus just swimming around the walls and celling..
We can dream
Amazing and fascinating animal.
"Who has grace like this"
*Black pastor voice* his name is JEEEEEESSSUUSSS
Cuttlefish....incredible also
Awesome creatures!
I love these little creatures so much. Feels cruel to keep them in tanks, interrupts their true nature
No mystery... They are not from earth.
Why did you reupload this it was already uploaded earlier this morning
Please, make available the English Subtitles. Please
Bit taken aback by how short their lifespan really is. All the time blissfully unaware how prolifically they reproduce. 3 hearts too, makes more sense on the face of it than the ridiculous B/P of a giraffe shooting blood all the way up that long neck. After all, didn't they say 3 is the magic number. Unfortunately, I bet they would say the same about the preferred number of crabs... just for starters alone.
Pause @ 6:12... that eye looks scary
Octopus are a terrific example of God's genius.
God is great
"when I met an octopus for the first time" "met" .....lmao too funny
It's so fascinating that God created every living things. From water to land. To trees to grass to flowers to vegatables and fruits. Everything!!!
❤️❤️🐙!!
Give em vr and wands with functions.
Oh that lab tank… cruel. People suck.
💗
O magnum mysterium!
I wanted to watch this, but it's not closed captioned (not even auto-captioned) so I'm sure I missed a lot. 😥
It was a brief story about how intelligent octopuses are. They spoke to marine biologists and an author of the book, The Soul of an Octopus, in which she theorizes they are among the most intelligent and interesting of earth's creatures.
Her book describes, in part, her encounters with the animal and how she had a sense of their curiosity about her being equal to hers about them.
To reinforce this, they showed the journalist being greeted by one and its handler pointing out how it seemed more interested in exploring the guest rather than to eat. He explained that a big part of his job at the center is to strive to give the octopuses sufficient intellectual stimulation, as they need so much.
The visuals in the last bit, where you can see (if sighted) examples of octopuses changing their size, color, markings, and even textural appearance to suit the terrain they are in as incredibly effective camouflage was indeed astounding.
I think the consensus about them is that they are complex creatures with sophisticated brain functionality worthy of respect.
I've been hearing new research information about them lately and the more I hear the more remarkable they seem.
Hope that helped a little.
And to think this intelligent creature is only one of an entire multiverse of magnificent beings. Together they comprise the credentials of their Maker, the Lord of the Worlds. SubhanAllah!!
It's octopi not octopuses
Grammatically speaking, the plural for octopus is octopuses. As the Merriam-Webster dictionary points out, people use three different terms, however: octopi, octopuses, and octopodes. While “octopi” has become popular in modern usage, it’s wrong. The letter “i” as a suffix to indicate a plural noun only applies to words with Latin roots, like “cacti” for more than one cactus. But octopus is derived from Greek, so the proper pluralization in this case would be “odes” if it was ever used. However, this particular word happens to employ a classic English formulation, and affixing a simple “es” at the end of octopus will do, according to grammar experts.
Hail Hydra
They come from Europa the moon of Jupiter.
What in Darwins Clear Science is a Soul? Does she mean Sentience?
They are kinda cute...and they taste good too....yummy!!!
But they are soooo tasty!!!
THIS LADY IS SLIGHTLY WHACKED.
No, just truly enthusiastic about her passion.
That poor woman is so confused . Animals are amazing but God only gives human a soul. If an animal had a soul then Jesus would tell us to save them also lol! Poor woman she's VERY wrong.
Spend any amount of time with any animal and you will discover they DO have souls!
