Power cords are always a problem. They're often in the way and too short. A good way to solve both problems is a quick connection system, which I made in this video. It was a bit difficult to find connectors, that also lock together, but that's what I wanted.
I've already used it for two weeks and love it. So convenient. A well worth investment.
The idea for this came from a viewer who sent me this link: www.grahamleggat.com/blog/201...
Due to a lot of concerns in the comments I might put the cable sleeves back on.
Though the tools may loose their warranty, but there's nothing you can't fix.
The plugs can be bought here: www.thomann.de/de/search_dir....
(you maybe have to find them for your region yourself)
    They're called: PowerCon True1 connectors
    Enjoy the video!

I did something similar a few years ago, but I simply cut the cable from each unit (about 10cm) and installed in a regular male plug. In this way, I can use any electrical extension cord. About $ 2 each plug. I even use a vacuum hose attached with velcro. One extension cord plus one vacuum hose for all the tools I have. Works good and it's pretty cheap!!!

    • @ajmonsters
      @ajmonsters 7 років тому +9

that's a good idea it's a way cheaper and it does the same but I would keep the cable at least a half meter long the weight from the plug might be annoying like Marius did on his Dremel that wasn't a smart idea

woody wood Can you elaborate on the Velcro solution for the vacuum hose?

    • @woodywood1951

I have some "hook and loop velcro" roll, some company call it "self grip strap".
I cut lengh of 5 cm, and roll them arround the power cable and the vacuum hose every 30 cm.
I have 2 kind of cable: one with hose (eg.: sander, jig saw, etc.) and one without hose (eg.: drill, etc.)
Festool does something like that: eg.: their circular when used with the guide... Festool is realy too expensive...

Search for "velcro cable tie" and you'll find a lot of those. The slot at the head end lets you thread the tie through to attach the tie to the cable, then something else to that. Normally it's so when you roll up the cable, but it also works for attaching things to cables: www.google.com.au/search?q=velcro+cable+tie

A great idea especially combined with a retracting power lead on the ceiling. Just a few thoughts to add:
Those ferrules need crimping. Otherwise the wires will slide out under tension, causing them to immediately contact and blow the fuse in the electrical panel. Also the electrical arc that will form will burn the inside of your tools. You risk losing your tools or even getting an electric shock. If you don't have a crimping tool just don't use ferrules, screw terminals on bare wire works just fine as long as you don't overtighten it.
Also, as others have said, strain relief on cables is important, without it the insulation will break faster then you realize.

the way to put a connector on the drill? Cut the original cord and put the connector on. if you want to go back to the old cord, splice the wire inside the drill.

I actually did exactly that but with other type of connectors some time ago (PC power source types, cables have the ones with the holes, tools the ones with the prongs, the one with the holes are the expensive ones with locking mechanism, the ones with the prongs are for tools and cost around 2Euro a piece, the other ones around 10 euros but with 2-3 of those you make enough cables for all the tools - i just have a long one, and a short one...)

I have been running with this type of mods for a few years now. I love it. I went IEC connectors as these fancy ones are just too expensive when buying with Aus $. I have kept the cable relief and about 150mm of cable. Gives plenty of flex and is just short enough to not snag on anything and not have the connector near the cutting blade etc. Gone are those hassles of cutting off the lead with the saw or grinder or nicking it with the planner. Now I can just change out the lead. (Haven't damaged a lead since this mod though )
Pack up is so easy and when swapping over my grinders I only need to unplug at the base of the tool and not find the plug on the ground.
I'd love to have these locking connectors, but the IEC plugs seem secure enough so far.
Test and tag inspections are no different than a festool, have a lead for each tool and have them tested together.
I'd recommend this mod to everyone.

That “ridiculously long” sleeve is a strain relief, and prolongs the life of the electrical cable at the most common point of failure, but as your project demonstrates, it’s a fairly easy fix.

    • @Contango1000
      @Contango1000 7 років тому +19

The Walrus - It's not as ridiculously long as you may think. In addition to strain relief, it also moves the cord away from the business end of the tool. Which for a sander is quite handy.

    • @vaalrus
      @vaalrus 7 років тому +7

Indeed. I’m in full agreement, Contango. I was quoting with some amount of snark… :) I’ve never met a strain relief that is too long. And on double-insulated tools without a dedicated ground wire, a quality power lead will help prevent electrical shorts.

    • @vaalrus

    • @PERILEX

False! Its a Kink protector NOT a strain relief!
The strain relief actually is inside the device! ;)

Yes, RCD wont trip without earth. But you also wont even notice that you are connected to live wire (but then you are probably standing on a piece of styrofoam and not touching anything else). Unless you could tear both wires (phase and neutral) out from a tool, without short circuiting them and tripping "normal" breaker, and be able to touch both of them, you should be fine. RCD will trip when you touch live wire and something else somehow connected to ground. Concrete floor etc should be enough to get that nominal 30mA going (something over 50mA trough heart is what kills you). So, RCD:s work with double insulated stuff just fine. And if you plan to test that, be sure your outlet is really protected with RCD and that you have tested it monthly or so, like it says in the manual ;)
As electrician, i think i have to warn about broken RCD:s.. What i have seen, ~95% do broke in a way that there is no way to get electricity flowing again (which is the safe way), but then there are those few percent that get somehow stuck on and wont trip at all.. I should take one apart when i again find some that wont trip. Those are most likely full of dust and never exercised by that monthly test cycle.
And for over current protection, i'm quite sure Marius has outlets protected to 10 or 16 amps. At 230 volts that should be enough for tools on both hands simultaneously ;)

One thing I like about your channel is that when things don't go right the first time, such as the wood bushing for one tool, we see the problem and the solution from you. Lots of other channels seem to always do it right the first time, and I know that's not how I or many other people work.

People are missing the obvious fact he’s chosen to forgo certain existing qualities for the ones he wants instead. He says he doesn’t like how long the connectors are, but clearly likes the quick connect enough to tolerate it. Having a tiny bit of extra weight at the tool can be annoying but clearly less annoying then dealing with 5-10ft of tangled cord on each tool. All the “Cons” ppl are crying about here are minimal compared to the “Pros”. At least to him, which is what matters. Turning 50ft of cords into just 1 dedicated high quality cord is very efficient. Ideally these guys would make a version that where the 1st clip is 1/4 the size and connects solid to the tool. But this is still a huge benefit in my opinion.

I did this to all my corded tools a few months back and wish I'd done it sooner - makes a real difference to keeping things tidy while working (having just one or two trailing cables is so much nicer) and taking tools in and out of storage is so much less unpleasant. Also put some flush mount ones male connectors on my homemade machines too.
You're right though, the connectors are not cheap!

This is a concept I have been thinking about for years. I would like to see manufacturers adopt a standard connector built into the tool and standard cords that fit across brands. I proposed this idea to Black & Decker / Dewalt but they were not interested.l think corded tools are superior to battery tools in every way except two and this idea solves one of them.

Yes, "it (could) be simpler than that ..." if you bring one power cord only, from above, that is coiled to not get in your way regardless of what tool you use it on. So when you disconnect the tool it raises out of the way automatically. But you did an awesome job so far. Congratulations!

Hi Marius, thanks! You got me thinking in another way 🙂 again 🙂
I read the comments and although they may sound a bit negative I am sure they meant helpful. Especially the ones about safety should not be disregarded.
I really like your channel, ideas, and mostly your enthousiasm. Please keep it up.
    Two things:
    - the yellow ‘block’ you see nearby the trigger and power cable is called a ‘heat melting fuse’. They are there to shut the device done if the there is too much strain. They are also designed to have a life span of 45, 72 or 128 hours... yep the manafucturer makes sure you need to buy a new one over time. So maybe it is an idea to replace them while te device is opened up anyway. Cost ariund a euro or less.
    - second thing: do you read the comments? Please react on them. It will grow your fanbase since they have a freling of interaction.
    Keep it up bro

That is a good idea. I checked out the site to order the plugs but it was in German , so it doesn't do me much good. It's gotten to the point that some times I'll look at the tangled mess and just grab a handsaw than going through the trouble of untangling cords to get the saw I really need. Other times like when doing a fabrication job while using welder , torch , grinder , drill , saws life becomes a tangled mess with all the hoses and cords.

On the bosch orbital sander, the switch has two little white "slides" where the blue and brown wires enter into the switch. Slide the little white pieces and they will take the tension off the wire and you will just pull them out. Do not stick a small screwdriver into the hole, you will bend the spring connection and it is a pain to get the wire to hold again. Hope this helps and I really like the idea of the custom quick connects.

i took this idea with a cheap solution. I ordered on amazon 10 appliance connectors ( in german: kaltgerätestecker) and cut of all powercords of my tools. with appr 4-6 inch left i installed the connectors. ( make shure you connect the part with the open pins to the tool and the closed part of the plug to the powercord, otherwise it is dangerous and you can touch the pins when the powercord is plugged in) then i made 3 powercords like you did with different length always connected to sockets. so i can plug in any machine in seconds. works really great. (also i recommend to buy good quality connectors, cheap ones will fall off and disconnect by using). but sometime we all buy festool, but not because the have connectable powercords. by writing this i just saw that the "bellevue workshop" has a video witha similar idea. check it out and find your way. you will be happy. thanks marius

An unusual idea, but not bad. I decided on a different solution for my handheld devices. The devices that are heavy and have a high power consumption were given a new 5m rubber cable with 3x1.5mm² and a molded rubber Schuko plug. Where earthing was not necessary, the brown and green-yellow cables were connected in parallel. This was clearly noticeable... For devices with lower power consumption, a 5m orange special plastic cable 2x 1.5mm² (indestructible) was used. However, this cable has the disadvantage that it refuses to be wound up easily. Overall, I would always prefer this solution for myself. - The solution shown was the right one for you.

Nice, i did the exact same thing on my corded power tools a few months ago. Nexans Titanex H05RN-F cable with Neutrik True1 connectors. Cheapest source i found back then was thomann.de
I also made extender cords with both male and female Neutrik conns so i can have anywhere from 5 to 25m (5m w/ wall plug, 10m and 15m extenders) of robust and pretty well waterproof power cord
Btw you can also modify static tools like a bandsaw, or a planer/thicknesser with it. This has obviously less use but it allows you to have extra security against childrens playing in the shop - just put the cords out of reach of them and no tool shall be accidentaly started. For those i bought 'chassis connectors' (Neutrik NAC3 MPX True1) and mounted them directly on the static tools.

Nicely done. I personally would skip the dremel since the new cable will add a bit weight to it and it will be more difficult to use. Very well done with replacing the cables instead of cutting them this way you could restore them back to original if needed for example gifting old tool to a friend. Don't mind the warranty the only case it is useful is to change defective tool and I bet you repair your tools yourself.
For all the people that are commenting on the strain relief, I bet that this new cables will outlast the tools or at least the first several repairs. The new cable is ticker and most probably better than the factory one for the most of the tools. And not to mention that he is using the tools with care in the shop not like a construction worker throwing them all over the place or pulling them by the cords.
Keep up with the good work Marius

Hi Marius, I've planned to do the same also for my power tools, bought all the materials, but not done yet...
Since the Neutrick connectors was rather expensive, I have choosen a chinese alternative (search for SP2110 on Aliexpress): not tested yet but at least on hand they seems to be good enough.
I have also decided to cut the original wires and not to open the tool because in second way you loose the warranty and some of my tool are still under warranty. Instead If you replace the original socket or shorten the Cable without opening the tool you're not loosing the warranty...

read the comments, it is a pretty bad executed tip. you can go with simple sockets or just shorten your tool cords and use extensions so that you can use your tools even if you do not have proprietary connectors. shortening is better because you don't mess up with internal connections which can be done badly (like the guy did in this video).

      so what.
      A. this solution
      1. is it better? no
is it safe or long lasting? no, it will break or short circuit
      2. is it handy when working? no, it gets in the way, especially in dremel and other tools too.
      3. is it fast to plug in? no, you must think 3 times before pluging in.
      4. can you use with any standard cord? no
      B. shortening cables and using extensions
      1. can it be done cheaper, faster and better? yes
      2. will it be universally compatible if you forget cables home? yes
      3. is it fast to use? yes
      4. does it annoy you less when actually working? yes.
      draw your conclusions

Marius, next project idea: retractable wheel for the wall cord, always wanted to know how it works.... like the one used for compressed air? Cheers!!!!

      Nice idea!!
For this you could use the mechanism from an old vacuum cleaner... tip in case you do this: clean the metal strip spring, curl it a bit outwards to get it strength back and use a little bit grease, worked for me. Try to salvage such from an a-brand cleaner, like Miele.

You should never use a cable rolled up (partly) though. You always have to unroll them fully when in use.

About 4 years ago I began to replace each of my corded tools with 18V Lithium Ion battery powered versions. I have a farm and find the convenience of cordless and brushless tools essential. I understand that as most of your work is done in your basement work shop going cordless may be more convenient but is not necessary. It is also less messy with only a few corded tools excluding the major ones.

    Hi Marius
I have come across the problem that you have encountered with regards to removing the cord from your BOSCH drill on a few occasions. What in general/normal situations is used is a method of attaching the two component/housing half's together by using a male/female system, the male housing/component connection fitting inside the female component/housing. @7.05 on the video it shows the view of the phase and neutral wires, ( phase on the Left ) just above these two wires is a small square of plastic (which i'll refer to as male locating/retaining lugs, or MLRL's) which is a part of the male component/housing, there will under usual/normal situations be two or three of these MLRL's. the idea is to slip a number of slim shims between both the male & female housing at a point which will allow the female part of the housing to then pass over the MLRL's, you will the pull the two housing components apart. I would mention that it's at this point that you have to be Extra careful, as i have come across springs, rocker contacts, detent/locator ball bearings etc.
I hope this helps & is not to long in it's entirety. Of course over the passage of time you may feel that you're going to stick with the de-coupling method that you have engage in & you can the make the decision to just cut the original cord at the desired length and thus save the effort of trying to dismantle your switch housing.
    Regards Bob

Whoooh, I got so much smarter! And most of it was from the comment section :D gotta love the Internet! I especially recommend everyone to read the comment thread under the comment from The Walrus and, of course, the heated and full-of-information debate about electricity and life in general under the comment from Ville Hietala. I, as a lot of other people had pretty much the same questions (un)answered but it's still a great video! Good job, Marius, at taking such an upgrade project on, for showing a bit of the insides of machines, for maybe screwing up big time and for the courage to do something out of your field in such an unforgiving environment as the internet (youtube) is. Good luck in your future projects and thanks for your other videos, they've been great!

Hi again, looking at you put the new plugs on your tools
(not the one that goes into the wall socket) it looked as if it uses the same
system that your drill uses to connect the wires

I LOVE all your videos Marius, you, John H & Matthias are my 3 favorites but maybe I'm missing something here - I don't see how this elaborate system overhaul is much more beneficial than just shorting original power cords to either right up to the tool, or a standard 10mm, 25mm, etc. and then using standard extension cords. Neutrik are wonderful connectors though - I have them on my Bose equipment for gigs (guitar/vocal).

I found the same connectors a couple of month back for the same reason as you. An was quite happy to see the company ships to Denmark. Now I have not yet bought any because as you say yourself they are quite expansive and because I am a bit worried about the length of the connector. I am hoping you will make a followup video after a while on how they are working for you.

Dem Draht zur Erde immer etwas extra Länge im Stecker geben - damit ist er immer der letzte den es ausreisst wenn das Kabel aus dem Stecker kommen sollte. Aber geniale Idee mit den Steckern!

These are the older Powercon True1 connectors with the exposed contacts.
Powercon standard now with powerCON 20 A and powerCON 32 A are enclosed thinner connectors. They are also less expensive with consumer markets being able to order 10 or 12 pairs for around $50. Although a powercon cable already completed will be around $12
Now I want to see your entire house redone with powerCON. I want the powerCON toaster! LOL
But for reals... it definitely is the best power connector by far.

about the powered drill, you can cut the brown and blue cables, and resolder your new cable, and if you want you can solder your old cable.

As many haver commented before, a retractable wheel for the cord seems to be a good idea specially if you could drag it from the ceiling so you could reach every part of your shop, proably something like John Heisz uses for his camera in his shop.

Be sure not too leave these plugged in over night. If your tools malfunction causing an electrical fire. Your home s insurance won't pay. This is an awesome idea though to clean up the space. Good work mate
