- Mark Twain National Forest is HUGE and has many opportunities to explore the Missouri landscapes. Bell Mountain Wilderness is mentioned every time we ask for suggestions of the best hiking in Missouri. Please subscribe to our channel if you enjoy exploring our parks and public lands. The Bell Mountain Trail is 11+ miles long and sits around 2 hours from the St Louis area. We enjoy our road trips to get to trails because they allow for release time before hitting the trail. Bell Mountain Wilderness Area is a location that we really want to explore more. It was perfect for a late-start Saturday in August. We used this area for day hikes, but many use it for dispersed camping and backpacking. There is a short section of the Ozark Trail that is shared with the Bell Mountain Trail.
From the National Forest web site: This 9,143 acre wilderness is part of the St. Francois Mountains, one of the oldest landforms in North America. The wilderness is named for a family that once lived and farmed along the ridge top that is now known as Bell Mountain. Elevations range from 1,702 feet at Bell Mountain to 970 feet in the Joe's Creek drainage. Local relief is about 600 feet and is characterized by steep felsite and rhyolite outcroppings. Both Bell Mountain and Lindsey Mountain offer outstanding views of the surrounding area. The associated granite glades provide a variety of interesting plant and animal life.

I love the wilderness areas. It's so hard to turn back sometimes...if you don't though, lol, it takes forever to get back. 9 miles is a nice long hike.
We had a hard time turning around and hmmmm’ed about it for quite a bit. We knew we couldn’t do over 11 miles that day. We will be back in the Fall for more! Thanks, Kogn!
