I carry a small camp stool on my pack and I've figured out the same thing you have. Animals are used to human's erect posture and profile. When presented with a still, low profile, they are not nearly as spooky. I've found the same with birds, whitetail deer, even black bear. These days, I never go out without it. I also carry a loose camo cloth I can lay over my lens and I've found that helps as well.
On a content level that has to be the best vlog you've done by some way. Subject understanding and your empathy for the deer made compelling viewing. First rate stuff Paul. It's great to see more emphasis on animal behaviour. A must see project.
I have been able to spend some time with an Elk herd recently, about 60 or more bulls and cows. Every fall they appear in a field in the morning and evening that isn't very far from my house. They are not really afraid of the photographers, of which there are many. Soon the battles between the bulls will be for real, until now it has just been practice. Once rut hits in earnest, the safe thing to do is to stay near your car for a quick retreat. You can't outrun a 1100 pound bull that can run at 45 mph.
How come you dont use your 500mm for the deer? Awesome video by the way. I have the same 400mm as you and been wanting to get the x1.4 what version do you use of it? I wana save up for the mki of the 500mm. Since the version 2 is still pricey.
Well work in progress Paul you definitely seem to be on the right track. Have you a more wooded area where you can stalk them, you are very exposed there ! Another idea is go in the rain they can't sniff as well and sound is muffled. I feel lucky to have the New Forest on my doorstep and bumped into Roe,Red,Muntjac and Fallow Deer on my travels recently awesome 👍
Thank-you. I've tried in the wood before but it's just so noisy under foot! I didn't know thay about the rain... fantastic info! I hope you have some good encounters this Autumn.
Great video Paul. Ive just had the pleasure of visiting a small private estate with good numbers or roe deer and am no looking forward to trying to spend more time with them. The same estate is an excellent spot for brown hare too, counting at least 12
Brilliant encounter with deer and the perfect warm light of evening as the sun begins to set.. gives the best light for wildlife photography.. really nice pictures at the end 😊
A really interesting video with lovely footage and photos. It's magical to be able to watch roe deer, they are my favourites.

Very much appreciate that Nigel. I really was amazed at some of the behaviour I witnessed. Was a joy!

Hi. I have a 1.4x extender Mark iii. The 500mm is so heavy - it's just not very practical, but I may try next year now that I am using the chair
@@PaulMiguelPhotography yeah i have noticed on paper its pretty heavy. If anything a monopod?

Thanks Paul you do have to tread carefully in the woods one twig snap and your exposed ! Fingers crossed for the Autumn Rut @@PaulMiguelPhotography 🤞
@@CamillaI exactly. It's all the leaves on the ground that's the worst though!
Excellent video love theese longer ones some great shots keep up great work 👏👏👏
Cheers Paul
Why do you use 1/400 when there is sun shinning and you get lot of light there?
It really depends. I think I had the minimum shutter speed set lower so it wouldn't go higher as often
You need to come to Ireland during October and go to Killarney National Park where the Large Irish Red Deer are getting ready for the rut.
