I love the album but I was expecting Anthony to be less enthusiastic about this one. I also went to a Guerilla Toss show recently and the new songs sound incredible in a live setting. I've seen them a couple times now and would highly recommend it if you get the chance, it's a great experience
This is my current album of the year, but after hearing several other albums from GT I can easily see how this album would be jarring to someone expecting certain strengths to be played to. I think where they pull from really appeals to me specifically, and as a result I can forgive a lot more of the album’s shortcomings. Even the more hollow themes on this album I felt played into the concept and enhanced the lyrics, as it felt like it immersed me into the tone of this world a lot more. I considered the lyrics on Heathen in Me to be an ‘aha!’ moment, recontextualizing the whole project’s focus and making it all the stronger for me. “If you want simple answers I will just give them to you” and the repetitive “easy money” or “give me the cash already” lyrics on said closer paint a picture of this album trying not to overcomplicate things, stripping down most of the complexity of previous projects. That dumbing down feeling so intentional and thematic could also be why I feel so strongly for Mermaid Airplane as a track, as it feels so innocently magical as if I’m transported back into the mind of an overstimulated kid just wishing the best for someone they care about but can’t be there for. I could go on with a bunch of different tracks but honestly I’m just glad you gave the album a chance, Anthony. Was really anticipating this release and your review for it for awhile so I’m glad to hear your thoughts.
I feel similarly! The lyrical themes may not stick to everyone for a number of reasons but I came away feeling very impacted by it all. I love the Melodie’s, instrumentation, and production of this album so much also. Probably my favorite this year.
Not sure if the "alien utopia" thing is what they're intending to go for on this record, I think they just wanted to write from a happier place. But ultimately I walked away feeling underwhelmed for the first time with a GT record. The anthemic pop stylings aren't for me when other bands do it and GT doing it isn't much better. The cynical side of me wants to say they played things safe for Sub Pop but ultimately it's probably more a disconnect of what I want from the band and what the band wants. Anyway, still super excited for the NYC shows this weekend.

The new songs played live with drums were my favorite thing ive ever heard them do and they really translated. I bought the record at the show and listened to it when I got home and the songs definitely didnt translate as well although I respect the direction they wanted to take their production. There was heavy autotune on the new songs live and it was super sick. Hoping they lean into that more and also put out a live album with the new material
Yes their live shows with this album release were absolutely transcendent for me and I really wish the studio recordings were able to capture that more. That being said I still think the album slaps, I absolutely adore many of the songs. it’s just not their best and there’s something missing that’s hard to put my finger on… it might all be in the production, who knows….

I knew it was coming.. look at you now melon.. all strong.. all beefy.. all muscular.. fitted around one of harshest 6’s to ever sprout from this fungi infested corral in the underground
After listening way more times through than i thought i would "Happy Me" is actually my favorite track. I'm a sucker for well recorded claps and fuzzy thick bass plus the lyric "But I'm blurring a good time into a war crime" is lyric of the year for me so far. Poppy yes, but this album is more molly than LSD.
Was a bit disappointed overall because of my own high expectations but I still enjoy it. There are definitely a handful of tracks on here that I keep coming back to a lot
I think this is my third favorite Guerilla Toss album to put on. My number one has to be GT Ultra with Gay Disco right behind it. Its a new sound so they gotta grow into a little more but its not a bad start to something new
I liked it, not as much as GT Ultra though, and I feel like this isn't what I'd show people if I wanted them to understand why this group is so cool. Maybe working on this sound will produce a better second try. I think they're capable of dropping something better and more consistent than anything they've put out so far.
I will add that with whatever new production or recording style they're doing they sound a little overly polished and flat. And I'm not in love with the direction the lyrics have been going - the songs still feel like they're barely about anything, but now the words are uninteresting and unevocative ("I'm famous / famously alive / famous / famous in your mind" huh? what am I supposed to care about or notice here?).
@@nevadanate4957 famously alive lyrics are from a poem Kassie’s friend wrote her so I think it’s just really special to her. Lyrics on the rest of the album seriously grew on me after more listens. Wild Fantasy for one has excellent lyrics. But yes, they can sometimes feel a bit more like just vague pop lyrics than they’re other stuff which has a lot of character. Though I think that much less now that I’ve gotten to know the album a bit better
Yeah I mean, let’s not forget that AnCo have a noisey, droney, abrasive, no wavey, darkness to a lot of their work too. I get what Antny is saying, but it’s not like AnCo is just MPP happy dancing psychedelic aliens. Edit: also I like this album, but I feel some of the criticisms. Lite 7 for me.

Give it a listen! I usually don't even watch a Fantano review before listening to an album, I just see the thumbnail and check it out for myself so I can form my own opinion first. Imo Fantano frequently scores albums lower than I would

Yeah this album is alright. Another change up from Twisted Crystal (an album I greatly enjoyed). It's not as catchy though.
