As always it's a personal choice. But what I've found is that most people that want an umbrella want to keep the sun off, primarily their head and shoulders. This means they have insufficient head cover. If people want to carry them I see no issue but I make better miles without messing with an umbrella and just wear a booney hat and good sunscreen. Umbrellas do come in handy when stationary though. Nothing like sitting in the blazing sun eating lunch and wishing you were under cover. For the PCT since you start in the spring, usually in NM, you have the coolest days in the hottest and most open areas so I suppose an argument can be made you don't really need it at all.

The burner needs to be able to turn on at high elevation and in the wind and cold. MSR and Jetboil have their own version but of windproof. I myself just bought a .5 liter Primus Lite and it is compact and windproof.

Why would you be worried about that when she doesn't have a sleeping bag or any warm weather gear?

What type of shoes do you hike in? I'm new, I thought people hike in boots. Are there more comfortable shoes to hike in now?
