  • Description: This will be a webinar discussing working as a doctor in Australia.
Many doctors make the move to find a career in Australia every year. This is largely due to the amazing weather and great work life balance.
Many people decide to take an F3 year in Australia, myself included, and I am going to share some tips and advice from the experience I’ve had.
    This webinar will discuss:
Pros and cons to moving, how to find a job, completing the application process, tips for planning the move and my personal experience in the Australian health care system.
The webinar will be joined by the team from Skilled Medical, an international medical recruitment team. They will be giving some information about their recruitment process and answering some questions.
There will be plenty of time for questions at the end.
Q Are 6 months posts comparatively easier/harder to find?
A Most commonly jobs tend to be 1 year but not impossible to get shorter term, majority would be aiming 1 year or 9 months at least due to visa costs and sponsorship costs
Q do IMGs in australia have an equal opportunity of getting into competitive specialties eg surgery?
A speciality training tends to be very competitive and Australian citizens tend to be prioritised in ranking for training. Not as simple as applying, you need to have got general registration and be in process of getting permanent residency to get into training
Q can I please ask how much basic salary is?
A basic salary varies a lot on job and location. Example- a HMO 3 job in ED in Victoria is roughly $ 90k -100k annually . Basic rate hourly for this job is $46 dollars pre tax not including and out of hours rates
Q can u get paediatric jobs?
A yes there are paediatric jobs, you can apply for jobs that interest you or do a general year which would include rotations in paediatrics as options for most places
Q You mentioned the working travel visa. If you were looking for more flexibility in terms of travelling around Australia with work and freedom to travel. Might this be a better option, so you can Locum and move around?
A You would need to complete one full year of supervised practise initially to get general registration. You cannot locum until you have general registration. So this would likely be an option after your first initial year after gaining general registration
Q I'm an FY1. How early do I need to make a definitive decision that I want to move to Aus after FY2? Thank you
A There is no time limit of making a decision. You likely need around 6 months to complete the process depending on how organised you are. You can delay your start date if you have not secured a job in time. But I started the process around December in FY2.
Q How early would you start applying for a February 2025 start?
A I would likely start applying July august 2024
Q Do we pay the agency for the support or does the hospital recruiting pay? If so does that mean we get less money than someone
A Agency is free to use, It will not affect your salary earned.
Q Are you able to take leave throughout the year? I heard it gets allocated as a block of 4 weeks and you don't have much of a say in when you ta
A Some hospitals and jobs will allocate leave in blocks, some let you pick. This will be dependent on employer . For example I got to select mine working in ED but my friends on general stream did not
Q do you need general/ full registration to apply to specialty training?
    A Yes
Q do the ED jobs require prior ED experience during foundation?
A Seems to be no, I got an ED job with no prior experience
