Chris, you make this tool look good. Your review makes so much sense and you tell it like it is. Now, on to the neighbors screaming, LOL they are outside to enjoy the weather too, just like you, so even tho they annoy your, they are hardly able to be heard in your videos. Keep those reviews coming, Hubby loves them too.
I have one of those and got it in 2015 and love it so much. The knife blade is what I end up using more than the other tools and I do love the case also.
Good review, I waited months for this to become available in the UK and after seeing Wranglerstar do a quick review on it I decided that I was going to buy one when they were released. My EDC for the past couple of years has been a Leatherman Charge TTi, and I absolutely love it. Towards the end of last year I added a new Surge to my EDC rotation and love it just as much if not even more than the Charge. Anyway, the Center Drive was released on Amazon UK at a pricey £125 this week (over 160 USD) but I decided to pull the trigger anyway, and mine arrived today. My first impressions of it are good; it's a nice tool and very different from the Leatherman butterfly design. I do see a couple of ways that it could have been improved, but they are nothing that would make me dislike or want to return it. I'll be carrying it every day for the next month or so to see how it fares in day to day use, but to be honest I think it'll eventually go in the center console of my van for emergencies as I prefer the pocket clip style of my two Leatherman tools for EDC, I'm not a fan of belt carry if it can be avoided and I will have the Center Drive in the pocket of my work trousers rather than using the pouch. I noticed you mention that your Gerber arrived super sharp, just want to say that mine definitely did not. I am probably spoiled with my Spydercos, Leathermans, Benchmade, Bokers and so on which all arrive razor sharp but the Gerber needed a little touch up on my finest stone followed by some stropping to be sharp enough for my liking.
One thing overlooked about the Gerber triangle replaceable wirecutter blades--vs. Leatherman ones, is you can spin em twice to two other edges befote you need to replace. That's like having 4 spare cutters on the tool
Enjoyed the vid, i made the purchase for this model a few days ago prior to viewing any vids. I didnt want to make the purchase and have preconceived opinion about this item. But i was very surprised on the build quality and how much more practical it is in the field. Im very glade you also feel the same way. I normally view vids that have been tested however, in this case i went with my gut feeling. Thx for the vid!
Like the extended shaft for bit driver & ability to replace bits. Some may not know that every time a bit is used, it's being " cold worked" & becomes more & more brittle. It will eventually break, especially the Phillips tip. Thanks
I just bought one after losing my MP800. I love the screwdriver and the blade being accessible from the outside. Like you, I don't really about it not having scissors. The extra standard driver bits it comes with more than make up for that. I only have 2 disappointments. I'd rather have a can opener that could double as an awl. The file should have saw teeth. I love this thing.
I'v been looking at this tool personally and I had good feelings for it. I know the feels on the noise, when I try to record in my backyard, all the dogs are like "oh hai u recording? WOOF WOOF WOOF!".
I love my Leatherman, but the driver is too short. The Gerber fixes that problem. The knife blade and plyors make it really interesting. I may have to check that one out. Thanks!
Good point. I had the bit extension and accessory bit kit from Leatherman, but lost the extension. It was a drag, because I used it ALL THE TIME. Never a problem with this Gerber. I get the feeling Gerber listens to what it's customers want.
Thanks for the video Chris great job. Nice to know that Gerber did nice multi tool. ill be in the market for one soon. Glad you made my choice easy to what get. Once again thanks for your time and effort in your vids.
Chris, thanks for this review. I have been wondering about this tool since I started seeing online advertisements for it. Now I know it is a good tool and will have to go on the buy list. I appreciate it!
Imagine what the neighbor would think if they looked at you at 12:48. Thanks for the great review, I have a Leatherman Charge and take it everywhere I go. The Gerber looks interesting.
I do like this--with the bit kit, well worth the price tag. Cons for me--to bulky and no saw is tough. Rather have a saw than the damn serrated blade. Pry bar was genius. Thanks Chris
Have you ever used the gerber legend 800? This was my first multi tool almost 15 years ago I now have several leatherman models including the new surge witch I lost in my salt truck one night while plowing and I have the wave, skeletool, wingman, rebar, and style. Love them all and your channel
Man your camera is super clear Hd great review. The only think I've seen was the carbide cuter broke in a cutting test on another video. I think he was cutting a medium nail
yes its on amazon for 109 Bucks but its with prime. looks awesome and will most certainly replace my bull rush I've been packing around for over a year now. I can wait tell tax time to get one and get to play with it and test this in the shop on logging equipment. might take some video of it working in there
I haven't watched a video in a long time of a piece of gear that I wanted. But I like that a lot just because of the pry bar . I've never seen that in any multi tool.
The heat treat seems uneven. Lots of people have found that the tools are brittle and can snap and shatter. The knife blade can roll. The screw driver is ok, but just doesn't really feel much different from a Leatherman with the extension in use. I wish the metal was better heat treated. I really wanted to like this tool. I hope you got a good one. Many of did not. Surge is much better, and cutters are better, and with the extender can use any regular 1/4" bits. Gerber had a great idea, but falls down on QC with metal treatment. Thanks for the review. Come back with the tool after hard-use. Head to head with Surge maybe... Cheers from Israel.
Just saw the outtakes... Man that was hilarious. 😂 I'm glad I'm not the only one who loses it when that stuff happens. When I was filming with LateBoyScout in Utah he always waved to people when they walked by so I felt like I was the jerk. I just can't stand it though. One time I was filming in Korea an an American dude walks over to me and stares until I finished. And then asks me what I'm doing to which I wanted to reply "Minding my own business how bout you?" They are even worse in Europe. They come over and quiz me in broken English what's going on and I want to flat out say "Who the heck are you???"
I still think the Surge comes out on top for the best tool selection and don't see a compelling reason to get a Gerber over the Surge. Another thing my Signal does not have a combo blade, it is convex and made out of O1!
PREPAREDMIND101: I made the blade for the signal. Everything else about the multitool is so good especially the weight. But I detest combo blades. There is a video on my channel about the blade.
PREPAREDMIND101 I would be happy to send you a blade for the signal. You have so much useful information on tour channel that I benifit from. Consider it a little something in return. I have a few knives and sheaths to finish up so it will be about 4 weeks before I can get on it.
I wonder how well that would fit in the knife pocket on the truspec tactical pants. if it fit nice and stayed in with no clip that could be cool. Hopefully that lumpy screwdriver on the outside won't be too uncomfortable when sitting.
One of the main issues I've found with the Gerber multi-tools is that since the design has the handles almost touching when the pliers are closed, they are very prone to "bite" the hand of the user. When cutting wire you must be very careful about exactly how you are holding it, or else you will end up with a nasty blood blister pinch on the meat of your palm.
I've been looking at the center-drive for a while. The biggest thing that bugs me is the slide-out pliers... They don't seem as robust as my Leatherman Surge. The Surge is solid as a bank vault while the Gerber rattles. You can hear it in the video. However, the center-drive is really cool. Don't need the bit extension (Surge) plus it comes with a bit kit. Nice sheath too. Think I'm going to get one to compare to my Surge...
Thanks for the vid Chris. I am not a fan of the Gerber because if you're using the pliers and it slips off what you're working on the handle pinches your palm because they close all the way.
I like knifes, flashlights and multi tools too At first I thought I was weird " who finds pocket knifes interesting? ". Imagine my surprise that tons of people do. in fact there is a whole industry around it.
I have owned a few multitools over the years and have found that the tool I use most on them is the scissor. I was given a swisstool X for Christmas and have yet to use the scissor on it. The reason for this is the leatherman micra in my pocket. It has the best scissor of any multitool I have used. The other tools I use often on my multitools are the Phillips head and the pliers. I am pleased with the drivers on the Swisstool so far. The phillips is nice and long and angles slightly so it is closer to the center of the tool when you use it, like that gerber. With all the pliers on multitools I have owned I have wished they sprung apart like that Gerber does. The biggest problem I have with that, and Gerber multitools in general, has nothing to do with its use. I just don't like the way it looks. Completely subjective, I know, but there it is. The Swisstool isn't pretty, but it looks like a no nonsense tool. I don't know if that will make sense to anyone else, but I like it.

bit off topic but I would like to see you do a review of the Gil Hebden rambo knife the big chunky one made of one solid piece of steel with the handle wrap maybe you could compare the cheep mass produced one to the original Hebden one?

I just don't see what's so special about it....especially for $100...the case is the best part about it...so few different tools...I do like the wire cutters...cause ya get 3 useable blades on each before ya need to buy new ones...smart...the driver on a leatherman is short...but you can get an extension...so that's not a big deal...and if you want your screwdriver on any multitool to be centered....just open both sides so they're in line...and presto...normal centered screwdriver....just a big gimmick to me...
Open both? With the pliers sticking out sideways? C'mon. The long, centered screwdriver and outside accessible plain edge blade make this special. Do people really find an extra serrated blade more useful than a small scissors?
@@Smaug1 you can always get a surge, it has large scissors and the outside plain blade (if the current revision has a combo blade by default, you can ask for a plain edge, i did) while also being sturdier and SIGNIFICANTLY more equipped than thi
You have kids. You should know that there will be distractions in life. lol I was waiting for some wood processing with the knife. j/k I'm guessing that the magnetic socket is metal all the way to the tool. It looked like a high density plastic, but the cutouts might be for the weight. Also, besides various screwdrivers, there are sockets that you can get to work with that universal socket (and another extender if wanted though that might allow too much torque on the tool). Nice tool. I have a Leatherman that is probably 35+ years old and a Gerber that was given to me many years ago. At that time, the Leatherman suited me best. But this Gerber has stirred up some interest for me. I have lots of bits and sockets that are in a separate pouch than my Leatherman that would work well for me. And there has been plenty of times that I have been out camping, hunting, backpacking when a multi-tool has come in very handy.
What type of warranty comes with Gerber? I know Leatherman comes with like a 25 year warranty on their stuff....so that's why I didn't mind paying $100 plus for a leatherman...but not sure about the warranty on a Gerber?
I have a gerber multi tool and I have no clue what one it is , the model # is 0870915E it says Gerber U.S.A. Stainless , its a one handed open , anyone have any idea what one it might be ??? Ps it looks a lot like the gerber MP-400
lol, now I know what ringtone to get you for your B-Day, screaming kids! Gerber whodathunkit, how strong is the spring on the plyer when its open, it didn't look like there was much resistance?
My biggest gripe with that particular tool is the damn sheeps foot serrated blade, would be much much better to have a saw. Also I love the fact that it has an Awl, that's frickin awesome but... where's the can opener?
Chris the two knives that you designed are two of best knives a woodsman could ever own! Keep up the good work!
Chris, you make this tool look good. Your review makes so much sense and you tell it like it is. Looks great. I'll need to pick one up, for sure. My favorites so far are the Victorinox SwissTool Spirit X and Gerber MP600 Pro Scout.
The shape of the bottle opener reminds me of the Gerber Shard Keychain tool.
Prepare Learn Survive! actually was thinking the same and it's super close to it just has some extra support on the lower "jaw"
The ads for this have been roping me in as well. I'm glad you reviewed this!
Well done my friend. Go Gerber!
all multitools are pretty solid. I have a $100 and a $10 and both have been flawless
I use to have the Gerber when I was 10 years old but I've lost fews years ago I love it
available in the UK from march 1st from gerbers online store for any uk viewers :)
Thanks for sharing. I really like the magnetic bit holder on the end of the Gerber.
Biggier is now gonna be on EDC forums everywhere...Good job Chris, thanks #biggier
Timbo Slice I was about to comment saying thanks biggier lol
"i bought the spyderco resilience because it was biggier" YUP i'm gonna have fun with this one
Timbo Slice , lol
I just got my gerber center drive and its awesome!
I Like the Biggier Gerber. Looks very very nice, And really really useful.
thanks for getting away from the knives and flashlights , the Gerber multi tool seems like it can hold up to some heavy use......
Add one of those altoids tin pouches and you can hold a whole toolbox worth of tools on your belt... I like that!

You can buy small stainless fold up scissors.
They do work well !
I'll stick with my Leatherman, anytime I use my driver I open the tool all the way, which centers the bit

Regular hex bits are awesome . Easy to replace or upgrade with better quality bits .
I work on copy machines for a living and I use mine daily. Love it.
yes, those god dang Gerber ads.

Chris another great video! I was really looking hard at this Gerber and I'm now going to get it. I can't tell you how hard I was laughing at the end !!!!! Thanks man. J
Cool review, now I'm buying one for my edc
I carry the Gerber MP400. The scissors and can opener are the best tools on it
As an outdoorsman I would have liked this if it had an saw and an awl, then it might have competed with the spirit x. I can see this as a great tool at a cabbin or in a car.
It does have an awl.
Interesting Multitool.
Sweet multi-tool! hey Chris. Have you considerd doing a review about other gear like. boots, clothing, head gear or gloves? would really like your opinion. thanx

I got one for Xmas but I already broke it trying to unscrew a stubborn screw so I am back to my old wave and surge.
That sucks... sorry about that.
Almost perfect. I would have preferred a saw blade as apposed to the serrated knife blade option. then I'd probably buy it in a second.
+bushcraft2012 "almost perfect" is about all you can hope for in a multi tool.
Tell those people waiting in line for the Shed tour to keep quiet!

looks like a very practical multitool
wish it had a saw....i use my leatherman charge tti saw quite often!

speaking of budget knives, have you ever done a vid on the Jeff White French Trade Knife?
Tanner, love your vids thank you for doing what you do. Never seen you mention what kind of footwear you use, any chance of a vid on that?
bit off topic but I would like to see you do a review of the Gil Hebden rambo knife the big chunky one made of one solid piece of steel with the handle wrap maybe you could compare the cheep mass produced one to the original Hebden one?

outtakes. awesome.
bought mine December 21st at Cabelas for 80$ with their 20% off Christmas thing.
What did you do in the navy? I was a Boats on an aegis cruiser.
Thanks Chris! I'll keep an eye on it, see if I spot a deal or something... Liked the outtakes btw :)
How does the cutter work on stranded wire? Does it cut cleanly?
Nice Tool Chris.
you should do a outtake compulation that would be awsome !!!!

how does it compare to the surge as far as size and weight
I have heard that the serrated blade is not very good on that tool,,Whats your opinion on that?
Does all the tools have a lock out.
Had a few cheap multi tools and nothing locked out and almost chopped off part of my finger.
The eyeball action is funny.
What type of warranty comes with Gerber? I know Leatherman comes with like a 25 year warranty on their stuff....so that's why I didn't mind paying $100 plus for a leatherman...but not sure about the warranty on a Gerber?
Limited lifetime in North America, 25 years elsewhere.
so they did one more pinch your hand tool
Very informative. Thanks👍👍 Love it and found what I'm using my card to get.
I have a gerber multi tool and I have no clue what one it is , the model # is 0870915E it says Gerber U.S.A. Stainless , its a one handed open , anyone have any idea what one it might be ??? Ps it looks a lot like the gerber MP-400
Awesome review brother. As soon as I have an extra $100.00 I'm getting it for sure.
It needs a Bit Ratchet on it, a Disposable Blade & The scissors need to be diagonal cutters.
lol, now I know what ringtone to get you for your B-Day, screaming kids!
