I wish it talked more about the Disney side of things rather than that subject only adding up to around 3-4 minutes of a 21 minute video. Otherwise the video did deliver on the title that it was pretty much the entire history of an airline.
The production values of this series are incredible. I feel more satisfied as a viewer watching one episode of Defunctland than I do watching several episodes of most "real" television/history shows. And I didn't even think I was interested in airline history! Brilliant, brilliant work, thank you.
My grandpa worked as a plane engineer for Eastern Airlines during the 80's in Miami and he loved it. He still has a bunch of uniforms, patches, pictures, tools and even forks, spoons, and knives with the company's branding on it. He was in the union as well and told me the owner sold the company as a middle finger to all the unions.
Large unions hurt everyone. The short gains the employee get are well short lived and often lead to hostility which creates bad quarters and layoffs to prevent bankruptcy Edit: WHEN I SAY LARGE UNIONS I AM TALKING ABOUT GOVERNMENT SECTOR LIKE TEACHERS UNIONS AND NURSING UNIONS. My grandfather used to work for Eastern and he still has fond memories of going to Disney all the time because of their relationship. It’s amazing to see what truly happened to this airline. Thank you Defunctland for bringing back the memories for my family
This is one of the most frustrating episodes of Defunctland, every executive was just like “I know what to do. I’ll just do nothing! I know it didn’t work before, but that’s just because they didn’t do enough of nothing. This makes sense, I can’t wait to get a pay raise for my genius handling of this situation.”
It's wild to think that Lorenzo could so open about his way of doing stuff, that is asking to be hated by everyone, like, his actions were even problematics for his investors, considering how he pretty much killed a company in an attempt to make maximum profit from it... And it could have worked if he wasn't so loud about it.
Killing the company isn't a problem for people like Lorenzo because they just take assets for themselves before filling for bankruptcy. They just proceed to buy or fund new companies and repeat the process, sometimes with some cool government handouts.
I remember flying to Orlando on Eastern. I kept telling EVERYONE on the plane that I was going to see Mickey. Just to (probably) shut me up a flight attendant, then of course called a stewardess, took me to see the cockpit. I was AMAZED. The pilot asked me if I wanted to be a stewardess and I told him, "No sir! I want to be a pilot!"
I love how these videos have developed and evolved from being about closed theme park rides, to becoming a detailed documentary series on the cultural impact of various theme parks upon the world around them, using defunct rides and closed theme parks as the starting point. The quality, research and structure is honestly among the absolute best on UA-cam and shows how devoted Kevin is to the subject Lorenzo really was part of those 70s and 80s CEOs who turned out to be the harbingers of late stage capitalism. Soulless, ruthless and without any mercy for the workforce. Really an absolute reaganist poster child with his union busting and absolute devotion to the all mighty dollar.
Sadly, CEOs like that are to be expected under a system that fundamentally rewards their behavior The will of the worker is not represented in either corporations or government, therefore we have no way to defend ourselves. Things need to change, and I'm done asking
@@ellie8272 There needs to be a happy median, a culture change. The only people who complain about the system are people who are generally just trash to be honest. They think they deserve so much yet they only complain about the system and are too unmotivated and scared to not take use of it's obvious benefits. This is coming from someone who fixes your airplane for $35 an hour while people go to college get generic degrees (outside of STEM) and make six figures from home. Yes I have a bachelors and yes I'm switching careers.
The 70s was a rough time to be in business, especially in a business that needed lots of fuel as an energy crisis defined that whole era's economy. Those who survived had to be willing to take some of the pain themselves, not just put it all on their workers.
My dad used to work for Eastern. Back then our family was doing well, we were saving up to move out of a rather uncomfortable living situation, he'd even started putting a small bit aside to help pay for my college...and I wasn't even out of elementary school! Then Eastern went down and our lives were changed forever. We barely kept our financial heads above water. My mom, who had up to that point been a stay-at-home mom, took on a job to help make ends me. When Eastern was running, we received discounts on air fair that allowed us to fly down to Florida and visit my grandparents often...when they went down, we had to drive, which took longer and cost more. It took us decades to get back to the level of financial stability that Eastern had given us, and by the time it did...well, that's more of a personal story.
It is truly impressive how great Eastern was to their employees even despite all of their labor disputes. My grandfather worked for Eastern for 40 years as an Air Traffic control guy and was able to retire in the 80's somehow dodging all of the layoffs of the time. His pension and accrued savings were so incredible they lasted my grandparents 30+ years with ample savings left after he passed, even despite his gambling addiction. That's sort of financial prosperity is simply not possible in our modern economy and it's a god damned shame.
Same situation happened to my uncle when TWA was floundering. He started working there right out of high school, never went to college. But they paid well enough that he was able to afford a house, and set about for the next decade or so working on paying it off using the comfortable salary he was making... then, surprise, TWA is over. He had to struggle for a long time working HVAC maintenance service calls, electrical work, odd stuff like that. He was able to keep the house, fortunately, and eventually find worthwhile pay at a good, steady job, but man, it could have been close. People on top don't realize how their petty fuckery over dollars and cents translates to the real-life struggle of people on the bottom. :(
My father worked for eastern in Miami in the 80s. I sat on his shoulders picketing downtown against Lorenzo’s war on unions. He deeply loved that company and still has heart for it. Lorenzo destroyed it.
Honestly, I have a cousin who could talk about trains for hours when he was that age, so it's not too hard for me to believe that a boy from that time would be so interested in airplanes. Some kids have a habit of obsessively learning everything they can about things they like.
@@gladitsnotme Who, as is often the case, was one of the touches of death. Though in all fairness, it sounds like it would've died with or without him here.
Walt Disney's relationship with unions is also worth looking into. Edit: And since I wrote that I've heard the episode "The Craziest Party Walt Disney Ever Threw"
your episodes are good enough to be played on the history, discovery or science channels. too bad those channels are filled with reality tv...10/10 video
I echo Rico’s observation. Defunctland is presented at a level of both quality and creativity that far exceeds all other theme park UA-cam channels. I especially love how you approach the main subject of each video from an unexpected starting point, and the diverse theming for each video’s intro credits and format. Keep up the excellence, good sir!

But, they dont do these kinda videos there really anymore it seems. This channel really hits that early discovery channel feel, I love it!
@@twyckoff87 he was a jerk, but he also wasn’t wrong. They refused to negotiate. Eastern got bought by Lorenzo, who didn’t even give them the time of day, and thousands were laid off.
My family flew on Eastern to Disney World in 1985. The first ride we went on in the Magic Kingdom was If You Had Wings because it was the first ride we saw. The ride kept breaking down; at one point I got stuck in front of a film strip of a street vendor saying "Would you like to buy a hat?" over and over for about 10 minutes.
I used to work for Westjet at the Orlando Airport and my favorite part was always announcing when the Disney Themed planes had landed and were approaching the gate. The guests, especially kids, would always get so excited and line up at the window to see it!
This was an trip on it's own but then when you pulled up to the gate and said "Thank you for flying Defunct Air. Remember that worker's rights are always under attack in this country in an effort to create profit for few at the expense of the many." That was my favourite part. 5/5 stars, would fly again
One thing left out here is that American Airlines offered more to purchase Eastern than Frank Lorenzo, an offer that Borman refused because of his hatred of the unions. He sold us all out, whether we were unionized or not.
How can a video about an airline be interesting, when I hate the whole notion of flying in crowded airplane, and just have 1/3 of the video dedicated to Disney's sponsorship? Only Defunctland can do that. They can make a video of the paint they use on the purple wall be amusing. Only nitpick is that I wanted to know more about the attraction "If you had wings"

Wow! I have to hand it to you. While I enjoy the vids that focus mainly on the amusement side of things, this video might be my favorite so far. Being born, raised and still live in Columbus, I am very familiar with the Rickenbacker name. I live about twenty minutes from the Rickenbacker Airport so Eddie's history is well known in these parts. To make this video even more personal, my first time flying was on Eastern (probably around '78) to Orlando for my very first visit to WDW. Due to my work schedule, I fly many times a year for work. There isn't a time on any of the number of flights I have taken over the years where I don't think about that first flight I took on Eastern when I was a kid. Thanks for the memories!
Your comment got me remembering a flight when I was 7. It wasn't my first but it was my first traveling alone. There was a delay due to some maintenance so the captain, who had seen me looking into the cockpit when I boarded, found me and invited me to come see the cockpit. I was blown away by the sheer magnitude of gages, switchs, and buttons there were and that anyone could remember all of them. He pointed out several systems, naming them and explaining what they were for. He even let me sit in his seat with his hat and headset on my head. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Then it got better. When we landed we were delayed again. The captain brought me back to the cockpit and said "let's see what kind of student you are". He pointed to different systems and I had to name each and explain the function. Happy to say I passed. Lol lol.... I earned 2 pairs of wings and high praise from the flight crew. Even today, 40 yrs later, whenever I board a plane I still look at the cockpit and remember that Captain.

The short gains the employee get are well short lived and often lead to hostility which creates bad quarters and layoffs to prevent bankruptcy

Which is more important: Solving problems, or personal profit?
Yeah, there's a reason neither of us are corporate executives.
@@DaSilverJoker Oh yeah, some people just want to take assets from themselves regardless of how many lives they ruin in the process.
That is why he would end up banned from the industry in a few years. Today, JetBlue has largely replicated the legacy Eastern Airlines network.

Lorenzo really was part of those 70s and 80s CEOs who turned out to be the harbingers of late stage capitalism. Soulless, ruthless and without any mercy for the workforce. Really an absolute reaganist poster child with his union busting and absolute devotion to the all mighty dollar.
Sadly, CEOs like that are to be expected under a system that fundamentally rewards their behavior

Wow! Yea people don't realize how companies effect other people
@@oooh19 Makes me feel bad with disney and google's record of picking up and dropping projects
Same thing happened to me when TWA went under
Same situation happened to my uncle when TWA was floundering.

@@jackycook64 Thank you for sharing your story. I can understand why that moment was one you haven't forgotten. Some of the most memorable moments in my life involve aviation in some way. I remember going on Eastern Airlines out of Newark airport to go to Disney as a young kid. Those little toy packs they gave us got us so excited for the trip! I had totally forgotten this memory until seeing this video and seeing the Eastern Airlines logo. Thanks so much for this!
The videos are continually better and better. Love this channel! Keep up the good work!
I love how Kevin & co. go back so far these videos it could be like “animal kingdom walking tour goes defunct; Defunctland be like ‘one million years ago the first human took its first steps on two legs’” 😂Love ya Kevin
I actually remember flying to Disney World on Eastern Airlines, getting the special Eastern Pins, and riding the "If You Had Wings" ride.
Best dark ride ever, with Mr. Toad a close second.
