      I successfully managed to cool my nano tank last year with a fan, a tray of water and an absorbent cloth/paper towel. I dipped the cloth in the tray of water, stuck the wet cloth to the side of my tank and blew the fan at it. The evaporation effect cooled the tank and then all I had to do was top up the tray of water as capillary action drew up the water into the cloth as it evaporated. That way I didn’t need to add more RODI water and I kept the lid on my tank. It worked pretty well for the few weeks heat wave we had in the UK and was cheap and I had the bits laying around.

    Excellent advice! One other thing that may help keep temperatures low is to keep the aquarium lower towards the ground. Because heat rises. Also, if possible, keeping your axolotl tank in a basement may help as well.

      As long as you don’t have radiators as the most heat will be near ground level as despite the fact heat rises the air will also cool as it rises and there is normally no heating element higher up in houses

    For the lid thing I definitely think you need a lid as from what I heard they are pretty likely to jump, so what I use is one of the metal reptile tank lids with the holes, I keep a small fan on the lid as well with a sponge filter

      Hey to have the axolotl tank low try closing the door in the room, make sure the tank lid is off (if u have cats or dogs etc. only a few hours a day) keep the lights off,have a window open if you don't have one in the room its fine and try using the water bottle thing.

    When I move into a house (if I ever do) I'm getting a 20 liter axolotl tank, with sand, a good amount of plants, a few hiding spots, and those little leaves that float to the top, a pretty dim light facing the tank, some shaped portals on the top around the little leavesp, not as much heat in my room, a chiller just in case, it does get colder on the mountains where the house is located. Or maybe, just a freezer with a load of frozen bottles for the axolotl instead of a chiller just in case (maybe a fan on top?), some bloodworms, earthworms and other snacks and etc. Of course a lid, pump, and touching the axolotl gently for a bit just for fun. Tell me what I am doing wrong.

      Hey! I’m of course not The Turtle Girl, but I plan on getting an axolotl and touching them isn’t the best idea, just because they have a slime coat that protects them, which can get damaged. They are also fragile, but I’m just giving you heads up, in case you want to/ever have to handle your axolotl with your hands. If you do end up having to touch them, I recommend gloves! Just letting you know so your axolotl can live happily 🙂

    Hello! I know this is very late, but just thought I’d give it a try. I live in an area where it gets up to 106°F degrees in the summer/spring. I’m not sure I can get a chiller, since theyre awfully expensive and I’m not sure I can afford one. My tank is unfortunately in a room where there’s quite a bit of sunlight, which might heat up the tank. Would an aquarium fan keep the temperature stable where it should be, or might I need to consider a chiller? Thank you SO much! 🙂

    My new Axolotl is so tiny and cute! I use a sponge filter, I have a small clip on LED light that I have a remote for that is dim. And I have a tiny cheap fan I don’t like because my temp is 68 all I need is like 2 or 3 more degrees lower which is so annoying 😤 so I ordered a bigger fan that hangs on the side of the rim and it’s 2 fans on it so I hope it works because it’s like stressed me out 😭😭 and i use the same glass thermometer like you 🥰 I just got my Axolotl today so I had to put my fan I use on the glass until it comes Monday he’s so sweet and active too! I got a flower pot that’s been smoothed out and he loves it

    For LEDS you want some kind of shade or filter over the actual leds for pets sensitive to light. Consider your pets that cant close their eyes. I use scotch tape but the hazy version, it diffuses the light and makes it less intense. Just add more layers until it easy to look at. I did it for my fish because led light is unnaturally bright and I dont feel like making them blinded by it trying to eat. I used a yellow highlighter on the first layer of tape and it made it much easier to look at too and the warm glow looks like sunlight

    So i got back to my mums house after 9 months of being away and our axolotl is super skinny. His tank is too small for him and we're upgrading to a 3ft 160litre tank on sunday, this also comes with a UV filter. Unfortunately my mum is one of those people that dont understand how to cycle or that you even need to do it. We've been feeding him frozen bloodworms, but he doesnt seem to eat much of them, majority just float to the bottom of the tank and he doesnt see them. So my question is, how do we get him healthy again?
    When we change tanks we're going to have to cycle with him in it, so do i do weekly 25% water changes or should i do it more often? And once the tanks cycled, what else do we need to do to keep him healthy? Mum never researched any of this stuff before getting him, because the people she bought him off just said get him a filter and he'll be fine pretty much

      Your axolotl may be stressed because he/she is not used to living on it's own and it needs another partner,keeping a axolotl alone for a long period of time can cause them to stress and sometime very sick,or it could be the temperature of the room and the water is not cool enough.If you use lights do not use them for to long again it will stress them out if you do make sure you buy them hide caves they love shade.Water bubbles will highly stress some axolotls and the panic.Hope I helped😇

    • @beanythompson1460
      @beanythompson1460 5 років тому +1

      Using cold water from the tap (use conditioner to make it safe obviously) will probably be cold enough but if you're unsure what you should do is buy a cheap thermometer they're like 2 dollars at pet stores or walmart and you can use that to check the temperature and if it's too hot add ice

    I like the simple idea of taking off the lid, but we are worried given that our axolotl is only a few months old, and we have a cat at home who we are worried might eat her. Any solutions other than a mesh lid? That might break given all the time our cat spends sitting on top of the aquarium.
