Round one goes to ZTW. This test is a shot across the bow to the big boys. Watch the video to see why.

Just to share my experience with ZTW - their 85 amp, 5 amp SBEC in 4 cell set ups (haven't run one in utilizing 6S) for 3D type flying is off the wall reliable - been using them for I'd guess about 4 seasons and I'd never chose another brand in that type of a scenario (Modified FMS SBach/Edge foamies approx 51"). Also, for two flying seasons I've been running their 150 amp High Voltage Gecko OPTO matched with a 6530 Scorpion Motor with 12S batteries (two 6's) swinging, of all things, a 26 X 15 Mejzlik prop in an 84" Pilot Slick, although the motor is recommended to be paired with a 200 amp ESC I haven't experienced any problems flying the plane in a semi 3D/Sportsman fashion including hovering.

Excellent work man, I just stroke a deal with ZTW to be one of their dealers and I am so stoked to see so many good reviews and good experience with the brand. Really hoping to make it more popular

They're good basic reliable ESCs. Good luck with your new venture.

@@RCVideoReviews you think Gecko line is basic? The Seal are top of the line marine ESCs I figured the Gecko would be as well

Gecko?? This test was a ZTW Beatles ESC. Basic.

@@RCVideoReviews yeap Gecko its the higher amp line from ZTW for airplanes, Beatle is the economy smaller model line for air and theres also Mantis for quads and such all ZTW. I just mentioned I was glad to see the brand preform well in your test

My reference was to Beatles, not ZTW as a whole. My experience with ZTW is limited to Beatles.

Nice DoE with these ESC’s. Used your Amazon affiliate link to purchase the 80a version along with the programming card.
    Thanks for posting !

Thanks Jim. I still use ZTW ESCs and recommend them. They are solid basic ESCs and have yet to let me down. I appreciate your support of the channel through the use of my affiliate links. Much appreciated! FYI The programming card for ZTW is cheap and very easy to use. Worth the $6 or so dollars.
FYI: If you need a BEC, I put the new ZTW 10a BEC in the PA Katana and so far it's been performing well. More to come on that.

You’re welcome John, and thanks for you feedback. Yup, ordered the programming card as well.
I’ve never seen an auxiliary BEC system until I saw it in your previous video. Very clean installation and provides peace of mind. I will stay tuned on your experience with it on your PA Kanata. Enjoy!

NH Jim Here’s a little pro tip for you since we were just taking about servos: You’ll notice most servos list two different torque values. One for 4.5 or 5v and one for 6v. 6v values are always a little stronger and a little faster. If you use an external BEC with output voltage selectable to 6v you get slightly stronger servo output.
I’ll also be posting a video soon on how to build a redundant system so if your ESC fails an external BEC will continue to operate the servos.
That type of arrangement doesn’t need to go on all planes but is a good idea for nice/expensive planes.

Thanks for the Pro Tip ! I never quite understood the application/advantages between the two different voltages, and how the BEC can select. Looking forward to the video on this concept! Jim

I’m not sure if you’ve done a video explaining ( in layman’s terms ) ESC one shot , multi shot or d shot . Their numbers like 125 or 42 one shot , d shot 150 , 300 , 600 or 1200 . Also firmware like ( heli / proprietary ) versus bl heli . The difference’s and minimal requirements ( now versus 2014 / 16 ) should be for airplanes , whoops on up to the larger quads . Long range , race or other styles of flying . It would help those of us without electrical or engineering backgrounds . So much has changed ( rapidly ) over the last few years . Thanks

Hello, I know it's been two years but your test remains entirely relevant and I was very interested to see your results. I believe that a good quality ESC makes a difference. I've had a few bad experiences with unbranded bundled ESC's that performed poorly in may ways: Unlinear or delayed throttle response, gaps or steps in the throttle range, overheating under small loads, weak BEC leading to brownouts, crap wiring making it difficult to solder connectors, the list goes on...
When you showed that there are gains to be made with efficiency and power delivery at full throttle, I had one question : Did you program the 0%-100% range into each ESC? This is usually done by powering the ESC with the throttle at 100%, the ESC won't arm and instead it beeps. Then you bring the throttle down to zero and the ESC records this range. If you haven't done this, it's possible that you're not getting the full 100% range from some ESCs. In other words, your full throttle setting at the controls could correspond to 90% on the esc and this would impact full throttle results.
Keep up the good work, the RC community needs this kind of information!

@@RCVideoReviews thank you for your reply, so we can conclude that a good esc can make a significant difference in some cases, like you’ve demonstrated! 👍🏻
