As much as I love this piece of music...I'll never listen to it again at 3 o'clock in the morning. I had a job delivering newspapers on Sundays and while I did so, I listened to some classic radio. One morning, this was playing. Ten minutes later, I got scared by a cat jumping on a trashcan.
The music is remarkably close to the legend --- On a Sunday morning, as church bells summon the faithful to worship and sacred chants fill the air, the Count sets off on a hunt. Pious elders plead with him to call off his expedition, but he responds contemptuously and rides roughshod through the village farms, trampling crops and applying the whip to the peasants in his way. Eventually he finds himself lost in the woods, where a stern voice from unseen heights pronounces his sentence: "Accursed hunter, be thou eternally pursued by Hell!" The Count tries to flee, but flames surround him and his horse. Imps and demons pursue him, now goading him on, now blocking his path; through daylight and darkness the wild ride continues. Even when horse and rider fall into an abyss there is no respite; they are borne through the air to ride on and on in unremitting punishment for blaspheming the Lord's Day.
Franck knew also be picturesque and evoke dark legends. Nobody can deny its great qualities to that music, which is far away of the genres in which Franck is expected.
Superman is an accursed hunter, endlessly and unconsciously seeking to return to his home planet, which he has built up in his head as symbol of goodness, he then seeks to make the world good so as to create his mythologized home world. He cant stop.
Fast forward to the 9:29 mark of this piece, and tell me with a straight face that that isn't the music from the movie Predator. Yet, there is nothing online to confirm that. I know what my ears hear, and I've seen Predator too many times to mention.
Thanks for explaining the background the music is based on.
I knew there was going to be a punch at the end even though this was the first time listening to the piece. I anticipated it.
I played this in community orchestra in high school in 1979. I played second violin.
This piece terrified me at the time!

One of my favorite performances! Thanks for posting!
There's few real masterpieces by Franck, just one of them. And great performance by Muti, indeed.
Can you give me a list of what you think are his masterpieces?
Esto es una exquisitez para los oidos!!
I listen to this and don't envision an accursed huntsman. Instead, I think of Superman. Wonder if John Williams got some ideas from the horn bits.

John Williams got ‘inspiration’ from every great composer!
What's the painting?
Come on horn section!
Why can I hear bits of the Bourne soundtrack?
You tell us.
A pretentious hunter killed lastly by his preys : 150 years before, a modern vegan story !
