Coming from a guy that has shown and judged livestock for many many years I clicked on this video thinking it would be very opinionated and one sided, but I was shocked. Well done and showed the livestock industry in good eyes
this was a super dope video! as someone who grew up in california and never had this kind of stuff, so it was cool to see a “classic” american tradition taking place. makes me want to go out there and explore that part of american culture.

The Iowa State fair is one of the best fairs in the country and super important to our local economy. It’s typically voted 2nd best (used to be the best fair in the country) Yeah the butter cow is boring but it’s unique to Iowa’s fair, so it’s important because of the draw and revenue. Also Iowa has 99 counties not 100. Maybe do some more research about things instead of writing it off if you’re going to do a video on it Vice. But I don’t expect much from this source anyways..
not from America but think the comments on vice needing diversity or it been racist are just rediculous and don't help the true issues. this is a old way of life and probably are some racist people but the fair isn't and tbh you wouldn't expect alot of African America Latino etc but doesn't make this racist.just like if vice showed a episode on say black bike week or a dance hall festival you would not expect see a lot of whites. playing the race card imo devalues real issues as its played to often

@Mic T Still. I enjoyed seeing this side of the country not my thing but still entertaining. I sure do love the fresh smell of pig manure coming from my phone as I can just smell it by watch this video
sterling silver where ya from babe?? you're definitely welcome here in my state's fair in New York, they are way better and not in the middle of a humid summer,
The kids involved have to put a lot of work into their animals. I’ve never been to the Iowa State Fair but a few small country fairs. It’s impressive what they do.
I don’t know, they might’ve used the wrong guy for this video. I mean I’m 75 years old, and I can’t identify even a little with this guy’s introduction, saying that he used to hate the Iowa State Fair as a kid, and he only went because his parents dragged him to it. But I would think that wouldn’t be a typical response for the vast majority of people. And I also would imagine that there’s very few things in life that could be embedded in a child’s mind forever, like the evening whirl of a Midway. My Mother loved the Iowa State Fair, and her Mother, my Grandma, worked at what was named the White Front, a tent covered diner that was near the roof covered music stadium, behind the administration building, that people would sit on wooden benches and listen to live music. And she worked there every Fair for years & years, other than the wartime cancellation from 1942 -1945. And I don’t know what year it would’ve been, that my parents first took me to the Fair, and I regret that I never asked them, but I would guess it was probably the Iowa State Fair of 1950 or 51. Because I was evidently too little to ride any of the kiddie rides in the Midway, and the earliest memories I have of being alive, is being held in the arms of my Dad, and being mesmerized by the colorful whirling lights of the Midway, and looking with excitement at colorful little cars carrying smiling children going around in a circle, as well as colorful little boats floating around a circle of water. And I also remember being fascinated by a loud sound of churning water with a mysterious huge wheel turning in the water, and the feel of a mist on my face, while small green colored boats in the water were carrying people into a dark opening, while others were coming out of a another dark opening. And I obviously didn’t know it then, but of course the emotions that I remember that I’m attempting to describe is what’s been known for over a 100 years as the Ye Old Mill; and that was first constructed in 1921 next to the Midway. And during the 1990s people started to complain that they feared for its structural integrity, but the Fair Board didn’t want to spend the money to make any repairs. But as it turned out, that decision was finally taken completely out of their hands, because in 1996 an excuse was made, that due to a somewhat strong breeze, it blew completely down. But thankfully it didn’t happen during a fair when people were in it, or there would’ve been a more memorable spectacular story. And it may never have been rebuilt, but thanks to a $100,000 gift from Boatman Bank of Iowa, the ride was rebuilt in time for the fair that same year. And since it was rebuilt, thankfully countless visitors, have continued do enjoy the historic boat ride of the Ye Old Mill.
