  • A very dirty Alienware, a couple cans of Air Duster, and a few wet wipes. This machine was a HOT MESS, but by the time I was finished, it looked and ran nearly like new!

    I used to refurbish old desktops about 16 years ago, nothing fancy, bland HPs and Dells, then stopped doing it. So now I'm in 63, I remember when Alienware first burst on the scene, wow. But I have never had the money to afford one. Recently a nice techie did a nice bit for me and sold me an Aurora A4 for next to nothing. He said he fixed it up , and boy, the weight yikes. Massive case but I like it. So far it runs fantastic, I know it's old but I have never had any gaming pc nor a pc with a graphics card. This old girl blows away any pc I've ever had so to this old man, it's phenomenal. I still can tell that it might need a cleaning but I could not even figure out how to open the case at all. So thank you so much, I am very grateful to your thoughtful and thorough video. I will listen to everything you said and not break any parts, plus I still remember the basics so it should be fun. I'm sure there is a ton of gunk inside. Would be great if cleaning it makes it run even better. And I like how it sits in place and it is not going to tip over due to solid build and weight. Thanks again. Well done sir.

    Really useful, detailed video. I've had an old Aurora R4 lying around for years and just got it cleaned up. Looking and running much better!

    Pro tip: if you have a canister style vacuum you can take the hose off the suction end of the canister and insert it into the exhaust end thereby converting your vacuum into a blower. I usually take my pc outside on the porch and use the vacuum in blower mode to completely clean out the dust. Canned air has a limited life for blowing as the can gets cold and you have to wait or use a different can. Using the vacuum blower twice a year keeps your PC clean and shiny.

    I had to do basically the same thing to a slightly older Alienware system (an Area 51 x58), and I was genuinely kinda stunned when it booted the first try after cleaning and redoing the cable management!

    Just bought a used one with massive dirt. It was so bad I thought it was water damaged. These cases are nice looking but the suck shit from the air and pile it up in your rig. Thanks your video helped a lot.

      It's super heavy and bulky, and a bit of a pain to get around, but it was creatively engineered.

    Does the processor have thermal paste? if it does, shouldn't be replaced?

    • @Zyferuscom-hy7tt
      @Zyferuscom-hy7tt  3 роки тому +1

      It was still cooling properly, so paste replacement was not necessary at the time. Had it lost cooling efficiency I would have re-pasted.

    My alienware is a auroa r7 and it's water cooled, shall I do the same to it as in your video?

    • @Zyferuscom-hy7tt
      @Zyferuscom-hy7tt  5 років тому +1

      This one was water cooled as well, that what that super caked rad was for at the back of the case. Where I had to put a paper towel under to clean it. The fan was in a pull configuration, and i had seen thru the grill slits that it wasn't too bad as most of the gunk was caught by the RAD itself, so I never had to pull it out to clean it. just don't rush through it, as things can break if you are not careful when removing things. Check all fans before removing them, if they are not dirty, then leave them. Less chance to break anything. Check all brackets to be clear how they come out, etc. so that noting breaks, and you can be familiar with how it all goes back together again.

      it only had room for 2 double width GPU cards, so to add one you would have to replace one, and you never really WANT to mix GPU brands. It can work, but there would be possible complications. That being said, one of the R9's failed not too long after and both cards were replaced by RX560's.

    what are the attachment pieces on the graphics cards and where might i find some?

    • @Zyferuscom-hy7tt
      @Zyferuscom-hy7tt  4 роки тому

      Those brackets align the graphics card with the special bracket in the case to keep the cards from drooping. You would have to contact Dell to get replacements. I do not have access to the part number any longer.

    • @EpicBr0
      @EpicBr0 4 роки тому

      You might be able to find them on eBay. I've found countless Dell parts on ebay and Ive never had a problem with them.

    Great job see i fix computers. And can air will cost alot for me beacuse im always blowing out computers so i got a air compressor but (GREAT JOB) i got that same alienware someone set it un the trash only if u knew that stuff people throw away al it needed was a harddrive it it had dirty sound card so i pull it out a reseat it and now it works fine!!!!

      @Zyferuscom-hy7tt  3 роки тому

      I have since acquired a DataVac, a bit costly initially, but it pays for itself as a very nice replacement for canned air.

      @@chadwicoff6378 Not really... nonetheless, I figured that it's fixed to the case and therefore it is not removable normally, in order to make you buy a new computer unless you wanted to disassemble the whole machine... I am not sure about it but I am glad I have never in my life purchased a brand new computer from dell. Also I cannot see how all those plastic bits are supposed to help airflow - they just act as dust collectors. My friend said that she had to have the graphics card replaced just after the warranty had expired... Realy dell were full of shit on the alienware shit, if you ask me. They seem to be designed to break.

    • @chadwicoff6378

      @@wiktoriaslominska8078 yes there seems to be a bunch of unnecessary stuff in there to make it seem fancy. I picked mine up cheap from a guy in need otherwise I wouldn't have one. Grills on grills on grills to collect dust. I did find out there is 3 screws to get to from the inside to remove that other side. Even more disassembley to get to those screws...so I didn't bother.

      @@wiktoriaslominska8078 Honestly, I carry a very low opinion of prefabs regardless of brand. I much prefer to build my own. I know whats in it, and I know what it takes to fix/replace anything.
