Rebecca, as a birth doula I just want to praise you for this and the rest of your birth crash course very clear and on-topic resource. So very helpful and a wonderful contribution to the wider community. Wishing you safety during this time.

Would you think that enacting your right to have your partner present would extend to having them there for your appointments and sonogram. And not just labor and delivery.
For most women having their partner there for these appointments gives them the support leading up to labor and delivery to build even more trust and intimacy throughout the pregnancy.
Having a support person there for all appointments helps the mother make better informed decisions about the pregnancy as well. Leaving this important person out leaves the woman vulnerable to being pressured by Healthcare workers into procedures they might have said no to if they had their support person there. Instilling fear and regret as well as mistrust. None of which are good for mother or baby.
Besides the fact that a support person whom already lives with and has personal close contact with the mother would more than likely have the same infections and diseases as the mother. Separating the two does nothing to protect anyone else from infection and does so much harm for the mother.
Making the mother go to appointments alone is just as detrimental and hurtful to her as refusing her support in labor.

I loved everything you said especially the part about birthing outside the hospital, which is what I might have to do. Although I have to say it's disappointing to hear you keep refering to birthing persons or people instead of women. I think you should consider calling us women in your future videos, it would make many of us more comfortable, and it would make a lot more sense. Thanks for listening!

I agree, the birthing person language is dehumanizing and diminishes an experience that only women can have.

Basically, you have to choose either your husband or your doula besides the midwife and doctor because the doula is considered as a simple partner and not medical stuff, right? But if at the entrance they were checking for symptoms/fever and the doula was wearing mask, gloves, etc. still you couldn't have both :( I suppose because of the risk of "asymptomatic" covid cases? :(

These policies and practices will vary by location and facility. We are hearing some hospitals include doulas along with the partner, while others are maintaining a strict 1 support person policy. We have many resources available on our COVID-19 Resource Page: evidencebasedbirth.com/covid19/

@@EvidenceBasedBirth unfortunately in some country, even one support person isn't permitted. So women giving birth "alone" unsupported in hospitals.

I was with you until I got to the part where you're advising people to throw temper tantrums outside hospitals and handcuff themselves to their partners until they agree to break policy to give you what you want. I understand the risks and benefits of having your partner there, however, DO YOUR RESEARCH before you choose a place to give birth. Don't choose a place you're not allowed to have a companion person. I live in a small town and we have two hospitals and and at least two or three birthing centers I know to choose from. It's not that hard to shop around ahead of time. This is what is wrong with the world. Honestly. Throw a fit until you get what you want. What a great example to set for your existing children.
