I don't make mistakes often but I did on this ccruise. I thought I did something that would have saved me thousands of dollars. so after watching this video tell me did I make a mistake or was it worth it?

Any view on a cruise is better than the view from my home.
The only way this “UPGRADE” works is as if you take all your meals in this floating living room/bedroom/ bathroom and never leave this floating money pit. Otherwise you obviously over paid for a cabin because it is a whole lot of space you don’t need for almost $4,000 US. Bottom line: if you are paying big bucks for a cabin you got to stay there all the time for the price to make sense.
I've never bid on an upgrade because I have always been afraid that the new location might not be appealing to me, but that much space on a longer cruise would really be nice.
My location means a lot to me and is enough to ruin my trip. I always select my cabin, my seats, etc. so I will not change so a family can sit together and I won't roll the dice on a blind cabin assignment.
I was going to bid for an upgrade for my last cruise…until I realized that I would not be able to pick the room location. If location is important, it is best to stick with what you can choose.
Going from $250 / day for your balcony to $469 / day for your suite. I would rather take another 16 day cruise in a balcony than pay for the upgrade to the suite.
the 16 days have pass from $ 2500 to $7500, so its 3 times more expensive.
Since it’s a 16 day cruise it’s $156.25 upgraded to $469.75, but I still agree with you- I’d go on another balcony cruise instead of a suite! But his room is Sweet! 😊
Yeah, you never know what you'll get with an upgrade. I prefer to pick a specific cabin and stick to it. Carnival recently offered me an upgrade, and actually provided the actual upgraded cabin number. That made it easy to check it out. I stuck with my original choice.
Oh I love that suite and especially because it has a tub! I would also enjoy the balcony, think it would be fun to occasionally watch the crew.
Just think, no one can see him, so he can sun in the buff he wanted to. 😎
I guess I'm weird, but I would find it interesting to be that close to the bridge.
The reason that particular cabin was available for your upgrade is because no one wanted to book it directly. They were stuck with an empty cabin.
There are several cabins that don’t like that on different cruise ships. You have to be careful for what you get.
Hi Don! One plus on the big suite and nice ‘living room’ is maybe you and Tony could comfortably enjoy watching the Olympics one evening after a long day of excursions? I like your suite but sorry the upgrade was expensive and sorry that the balcony isn’t ideal. Enjoy!!!
One of the reasons that I like your vlogs is that you show these great looking cabins. I would not spend that kind of money on a cabin like that even with that great discount.
That cabin is the EXACT reason I do not do the upgrade bids! The price was pretty good though...
I agree with you 100% about the tub. A big walk in shower would be so much better for me.
We had a window cabin and bid on a balcony and won 2 days before the cruise. They gave us a handicap room which we did not request but it was huge and great.
I love the size of the cabin but that balcony is a bust. Not worth the extra $$
You would think they would have sent an email to make sure you were still interested in the upgrade and require you to confirm.
@maryschneider2060 With Princess, they tell you during the bid process that if you are selected, you will be automatically charged and notified of the upgrade.
That is NOT the universal rule for bidding upgrades…
@@silviaeastonborges5204 I've bid on Princess upgrades a couple of times and always receive that message. I'm not sure why it's different for you.
It is a nice suite. I didn't realize bids cost so much. Like you ssid it is 16 days.
I really hate to say it; but the balcony is a deal killer, especially at 5,000 (CAD)!

Never bid for an upgrade if you don't want to spend the money. Even if you think that you will not win the bid. Also always check all of your emails if you do bid.
Maybe it’s just me, but saying you made a $5000 mistake implies that you unknowingly did something that caused you to lose $5000. Not that you paid/received an upgrade you forgot you made a bid for. And got an amazing deal on it too.

I would never pay 7.5K for a cruise. Like Emma, I try to get the absolute best deal I can. If I can't find a deal, I don't sail. With that being said, your balcony is like 3 times the normal size. Move the table closer to the door and your view will be ok. The suite is nice. Not 7,5K nice, but it's better than most cabins.
Moving the table would not be wise. The speed of the ship is moving at ~17 knots would be about 20 MPH and any wind from fore to aft would additionally increase the speed (if a 10 mph head wind would increase it to 30 Mph). Then if you take the curvature of the ship, the wind speed would be accelerated again. That is why the the table and chairs are behind the wall and glass. Who would want to be in an unobstructed Gale force wind?
@@c.rizzo7 If all that is true, then just standing outside the cabin would have the same conditions, no? I have never noticed any significant wind on a ship balcony, maybe I was lucky.

Loosing $5000 is NEVER a “good deal” even if the king and queen of England are beside you…. Only good if it had included a partner of chosen sex.

I have had too, many members who have submitted an upgrade bid only to find they were in a worse location. We never bid on an upgrade as I can't justify the added expense of already increasing costs of cruise fares.
Don, the first thing I learned watching your videos is to never bid on a cabin, and how it's worth it to pick your precise cabin because you can't control the location of the cabin or if it will have an obstructed view. I learned that from you Don. It's one of the few things you taught me that was actually useful! How are you making mistakes that you yourself were so adamant about? And it wasn't even a free upgrade you paid $5000 on top of whatever else you paid! Sad.
I have always been leary about the upgrades, we’ve done it from an inside to balcony and was pleasantly surprised. Have never tried to get a suite.
That's crazy expensive, but it's nice to see these nice suites.
A suite and all that money, and all you got was a view of the parking lot. You should have got at least an Ocean view for that price.

Sometimes you roll the dice and win and sometimes you lose. I like the cabin except for that view. I do care I could see the Captain. I think that is sort of good. I prefer the more aft locations on ships. I never do guaranteed cabins, I have bid on RC a time or two but never won a bid. We are headed to Barcelona later this year with my brother. Celebrity made a mistake on his booking, his TA caught is and to make up they gave him an aft balcony and some money back!?! I am jealous as we have been on 20 something cruises and ever had the up grade fairy visit. It is my brothers third cruise and first on Celebrity. I am trying to get him and his wife hooked on cruising.
Just enjoy! Not perfect balcony but still you are the winner.
I would love to have had that room, but I too, don't really do baths. I do love that balcony as it gives me space to practice line dancing in. (No winnings to me, just in case you are still doing that.)

Ouch, that's an expensive oopsy. I'm sorry, but I've done something like that too. Last year, I thought I canceled a plane reservation. I didn't find out that it never happened until I started getting texts about boarding time. It was weird.

I always calculate everything before I bid for an upgrade, sometimes, the cabin is not my priorities but the beverage package or better excursion is a must… I do not spend much time in my cabin…

Correct...for those that bid on an upgrade or as an ICE unit, in case of issues with another suite during the cruise...which happened to friends.
Given no ready access to the top of the bridge for viewing...don't take her through the canal.
I would love to have a tub! I don't take showers, so a shower-only is a drawback for me.
Same with me, I'm finally going to have a bathtub on my next cruise. I'm going to enjoy soaking every night in it. I'm afraid I'll never want to go back to a shower only cabin.

@@dawncrossland3028 A lot have them in their suite categories but the older Holland America ships have them in their "balcony" cabins. They call them suites but the lower level ones are just basic balconies. The specific ship I'm going on with it is the Zaandam.
We do not make bids for upgrades, we like the location of what we book and would not like to be surprize at getting what they consider an upgrade. ❤

It was Princess to Alaska. The beds are the best of the 4 cruislines we have traveled with. I think Princess is my favorite. I like the service and the ship .

I can see why you don’t love the balcony.
I wish on upgrades they would notify you and allow you to accept or reject the upgrade rather than just automatically applying the upgrade. We recently "won" an upgrade from an inside cabin to an obstructed ocean view. When we opened the drapes we discovered the obstruction was a lifeboat that blocked 100% of the view. E might as well not had a window at all. The upgrade was not worth it except we got a bit more square footage in the cabin.

A suite for 16 days would be phenomenal. I have sailed on celebrity in a suite for nine days, and have another trip coming up for 10 days in a suite. The best of luxury cruising.
But I’m curious about the cost of your upgrade… is that double occupancy price? I know you usually sell solo. Well I don’t actually know, but it’s been mentioned on some of your Vlogs and some of Tony’s Vlogs. Either way, make the most of it and enjoy!

i'd say it was money well spent! I would be very happy with it, especially for 16 days. you can give the crew a big wave! obstructed view suite! Still not a mistake! Maybe you can go tell them you're not happy, that this is not what you bid on. Is this the trip you're on with Tony? Or are you back from Iceland, et al?

Such a rough life 🙂 You could paliate the balcony issue by getting a big lounge chair and jumping over the rail/windows to get on top of the bridge and setup shop there and you'd have the best view on the ship !!!! (then bang on the floor to get bridge crew to bring your some Pina Coladas as you lazily lounge around all afternoon on a sunny sea day 🙂
In your room tour, you didn't show where you store Tony when not in use 🙂
Had a similar suite on the Ruby princess (forward Starboard side suite (Family suite but without family)) the balacony was unusable except in port. The wind made it almost impossible to use.
I swear i watched this before!?!?!?! Yeah between you and tony on this trip and complaints all the time...i enjoy other postive channnels
@KathyJessica There was a previous video, but this was the full cabin tour and the one you are remembering was just about the balcony.
I much prefer the suite size over the less than stellar balcony. Good deal for half price.

Nice suite. We had an aft suite that was very similar on Grand Princess, but the bathroom was much bigger with doorways in the bed and sitting rooms.

Had you taken the chance until you got on board you might have been able to get the “suite” for a few hundred dollars. I have done that before on another line and got a fabulous upgrade for $500.
Looks very much like the mini suite on regal m107/m108 but you get a better balcony on the regal.
Never been in a suite, so I would be thrilled with the room and balcony but not the cost. Enjoy.

One note: cruise lines commonly advertise certain sailings with rooms costing 15-20K or more. The same cruise a couple of weeks later can be as much as 90% off. In my opinion no “suite” is worth 15-20K
$7500 is too expensive for me for a balcony cabin, even a big one.

Did Tony get a suite too? It’s not truly worth it. I had one on Royal -2 story and once a owners, Sky on Celebrity Aoex- all not worth it- the Royals closets were not convenient for closets, away from the bedroom, owners had a bidet and tub took up too much space - Sky Luminae- it was good but rather not. The retreat umbrellas all taken up on sea days! Eh
