    I really loved this vlog. I’ve been watching your videos for a few months now, I just began my PhD in the US last month. And you have helped me in so many many ways. There is a quote by Abraham Lincoln that I’m going to paraphrase, but he said that if he was given five hours to cut down a tree, he would spend the first four hours sharpening the axe. Your point number 8 really struck home. Thank you so much for your time, your thought provoking information and your passion! I wish light, love and happiness

    Dear Tara, your vlogs fill my heart and brain with joy and motivation! I am preparing for my PhD viva which is scheduled on the 7th of October. I was wondering whether you would consider presenting a vlog for succeeding in the viva. Love and light back :) Zamira

    I had a wonderful supervisor. I used him as a shield off which I could bounce ideas. I would recommend to any aspiring phd students that you spend around 10 years in industry. In that time you will acquire many of the attributes that Tara demands. Going to a phd directly from a bachelor is generally a fools errand. Mature first.

    Hi Tara, I just finished my PhD this summer and your vlogs have helped me tremendously (like the writing tip every morning!) when I was at a somewhat low point. But I'm happy to recognize many of the traits mentioned in this vlog in myself.
    It's also somewhat serendipitous you mention the "I'm just gonna come in and write up this project that I thought of because I know the field entirely" type at around 11:30. I was confronted with a junior colleague recently who just started their PhD journey and switched advisors in the first week, is already thinking about not doing a postdoc but going straight to tenure-track, and now, in week 4 or so, is making these huge claims that have been well-established in the literature.
    As always, thanks.
    Thomas Van Hoey, now PhD :D

    I did my phd over 20 years ago. I'm 84 now. Any day I do not learn something is a lost day. I had manager working for me who was very smart but not successful. A colleague said to me that he may be smart but he wasn't maze bright. Something to bear in mind. Oh the fun my 2 colleagues and I would have had with you Tara in our doctoral seminars.

    Hi Tara. First, I think your vlog should be entitled "The ideal type of a PhD student". Second, I certainly was NOT the "ideal" type of PhD. I agree with you in the sense that not knowing the skills a PhD student needs may affect the student's performance, and wastes the supervisor's time and the student's time. It makes the process much harder and painful. Some students know how to address these problems, though they are consistently told that if they do not have the skills at the very beginning they will fail. For instance, in my case, it took me three days to solve my grammatical mistakes, and a two months to organize my writing to set a path for graduation. Ironically, I wasted two years arguing with my professors on whether I was prepared enough or not. I feel I wasted more time arguing about the "ideal type of PhD student" rather than putting my mind, and focus into addressing problems. I am not saying that this issue should not be discussed. I just try to point out that it is easier for professors to say things and argue when they are in a position of power. I assume that, to be fair, you will do a vlog that deals with "the ideal type of supervisor".
    I changed supervisors and most professors in my department categorized me as a "difficult student to supervise". Once I started working with my new supervisor, she was very afraid of supervising me due to my previous bad reviews. However, over the months she started to recognize my efforts. I think she was more objective to revise my work by pointing out, respectfully, what things worked and what things did not work in my drafts. I felt that my level of analysis and writing increased substantially. Since then, I regained confidence and I started to address problems in my drafts more effectively. I regained motivation, love for knowledge, and confidence.

    I have been watching your videos and I appreciate your work. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
    Regarding this topic I have one question for you if you allow me.
    What do you think is the result when a supervisor picks a good PhD student, promise him/her the best and then drains off all of his/her motivation and confidence during the process?
    There are supervisors that really should not be allowed to have students. Most of the students, instead of getting a degree they are awarded with burnout.

    • @gabrielasofia4816
      @gabrielasofia4816 Рік тому

      I've been there, but in that case, it is better to change supervisors. And also manage our emotions with a counsellor at the University. I agree with this vlog in that the final end is to present a coherent written draft. The student-professor relationship is never easy, and it sometimes may involve drama. But if you don't get stuck with the fixation of the supervisor in specific aspects, I think you can actually make a strong case for yourself. To stop getting stuck, I recommend you to use online educational tool, such as Coursera--more specifically Academic Literacy, Writing in the Sciences, and maybe other courses you find useful. At the end, the examiners will point out other problems that your supervisor never did. This will balance the strenghts and weaknesess of your dissertation, and change the focus of what needs to be done to finish a PhD sucessfully.

    I found your channel so late, abandoned my PhD after 6 years of stress and depression in a Chinese university, I blame myself for trusting the fake promises of perusing my studies in that university, my expectations were so high, later I found that everything is fake! And what you see is not what you get! As a foreigner in China, I was isolated in lab and campus, my labmates were not friendly, the language barrier and communication were both the biggest issues ever, that journey was a waste of time and energy! Unfortunately.
