Hilltop Hoods Fifty in Five Mega Reaction, Review, Breakdown. This song is a history lesson!

- It's not my intention to make hour-long reaction videos, but for this track I had to make an exception. A veritable "We didn't start the fire" on steroids, a plausible working title for the song could have been "Bitch, yes you DID start the fire!" It'll be a challenge to find any other track that packs as much into 5 minutes as this one did. I look closer I'll be able to find the baby, the bathwater, AND the kitchen sink. Performed solo by Suffa, from this song is a blistering, pissed off tour de force through a litany of global events that make up the last half century.
It's 50 years of history in 5 minutes. It was written to answer a song from the 60s that asked Where will be in 50 years? Pressure and Suffa are the MCs. Dj Debris is their Dj. They have been around for about 20 years and they are from Adelaide South Australia xx
Not sure if you noticed that this is a different rapper from the last song (Suffa on this track, Pressure on the last). The most defining feature of most hilltop songs, for me, is the way they bounce off one another, so its interesting that your first exposures are 2 of their solo tracks.
I can provide some context and clarity you were discussing (24:30) - You were pretty darn spot on!. So Whitlam, Keating, and Hawke all all former Prime-Ministers of Australia. Abbott (Tony) and Costello (Peter) are/were both part of the Australian Liberal Party (Tony Abbott became Prime-Minister of Australia a while back), I don't know much about Peter Costello, but Tony Abbott had very strict views in immigration. People coming to Australia via boat (extremely unsafe - many die on the way) would often be turned away from Australian shores, and if they did make it, they would end up in immigration centers which are terrible (A friend of mine was in one and he experienced a lot of physical and mental trauma leading to a suicide attempt at the age of 13).
At 51:18 - I have always wondered about this particular line so I had a quick look and found this.
"The Catholic Church is infamously linked to untold acts of child molestation, with countless allegations, investigations (an ongoing Australian Royal Commission was launched in 2012), trials, and convictions against priests, nuns and other members of the church being made.
A large portion of the Catholic community that were found to be wrongdoers were teachers at Catholic Schools, often taking advantage of young students in their care - children sent to be educated, and sent away as victims. The Catholic Church, as well as the higher-ups of the schools, would cover up these frequently occurring “incidents” - in many cases simply relocating teachers (a new case came to light in Australia as recently as the 24th of February, 2015) who would, occasionally (often), reoffend."
You should check out Stopping All Stations (original or restrung version). Tells a story from the 3 perspectives about a train ride mugging, it is deep...
100% great track also would like to see him react to them just flexing so clown prince or dumb enough
@@supportaushiphop1260 OOFT (Ponda Boba) is a personal favourite track of mine, its just them talking about how good they are but I love the comparison between the competition and Ponda Boba, a star wars character who only appears once, showing how insignificant their opponents are in the long run.
As one of my favourite Hilltop songs I've listening to this 50+ times, but you were still able to add some additional context that I hadn't picked up before. Great job on the break down mate. Epic effort and glad you enjoyed the track.
Fantastic breakdown. Thank you for reviewing this group. Knowledge time. Dodie Fayed was talking engagement to and of Princess Di. Theory has it that the Royal family... engineered her untimely passing. All the names that followed the British content are those of 1980"s and then 1990"s Australian politicians. The Abbott and Costello line references orders given to Australian Navy vessels to view but not rescue refugee boats. This resulted in desperate parents throwing their children overboard to force rescue.
Abbott also won an election on the “Turn the boats back” fear mongering. Total boats turn back since 2013…33. 810 refugees. He was a wanker and we fell for it.
great video! some other songs i can recommend are: the beds are burning - midnight oil (about indigenous Australian land rights and the earths problems), blue sky mine - midnight oil (about an asbestos mine in Western Australia which was mentioned in this video) and from little things, big things grow - Paul Kelly (about indigenous land rights)
Whitlam, Keating, Hawker, Abbott are ex prime ministers of Australia. Costello was a long serving treasurer of Australian
Hi from Aus. I'm a long time hoods fan. This song was released in 2009 in their state if the art album. I'm gonna drop comments here as I watch the video because otherwise I'll forget what I mean to say. At 24.07, where you are talking about the random names. Those are previous Australian prime ministers. Bob Hawke made a public speech in the mid 80s that no child would live in poverty by 2000.
Abbott and Costello refers to Tony Abbott (our then prime minister) and Costello (his first name evades me at this point) was I believe the federal finance minister. They colluded to do a lot of things the Australian public weren't happy about. This leads into the next line about promises and children being thrown overboard. They made many promises before election but completely ignored them once in power. There was also situation regarding border force officers boarding refugee boats and throwing children overboard so the parents either followed their children into the open sea or watched them drown.
Onomatopea
44.30 I don't know the details but there was a mining company here in the 80s that has some reference to blue sky. A lot of people were screwed over. An Aussie band called midnight oil wrote a song about it. Search for blue sky mine.
The grim reaper reference is with regard to a tv campaign by the aus government in the 80s regarding aids awareness.
The Guildford 4 were a group that were incorrectly convicted of carrying out an Ira bombing in the town of Guildford UK in the 70s.
Good knowledge there. You didn’t miss too much at all. Even pretty much nailed the internal Australian references
Good mix of historical context/opinion plus musical critique!
Great review mate not enough people actually appreciate the depth of this track
Its nice to see this song get some admiration, it amazing but has always flown under peoples radar.
ngl I thought you would be the same as all the other reactors and just say "yeah" and nod your head, but you are actually way smarter than I thought.
If you want something a little more upbeat try Drapht - Jimmy Recard
Gough Whitlam, John Keating, Robert Hawke, Tony Abbot and Peter Costello are all previous Prime Ministers of Australia. Hawke famously said that by 1990 no child would live in poverty. More recently Australia has had a strict policy on people smuggling, some of the desperate refugees threw their children overboard so they would be rescued by the Naval ships trying to turn them back. Also the grim reaper with a bowling ball refers to an Aids ad of the time. It was quite a shock campaign. Beware that Aids could bowl you over and no one would be immune or exempt.
The 'children overboard' reference you mentioned at about 24min -
"In August 2001 Australian troops boarded the Norwegian freighter MV Tampa off Christmas Island. The commander of the vessel, Captain Arne Rinnan, had rescued hundreds of asylum-seekers from a stranded Indonesian fishing boat in the Indian Ocean and was attempting to bring them to Australia."
They tried to turn the boat back but the afghan refugees were so desperate to get to Australia that they 'threw their children overboard'
This is a shameful part of Australian history with thanks to the conservative government at the time.
They were not POLITICAL asylum seekers, they were ECONOMICAL asylum seekers. Afghanistan was STABLE AT THE TIME - FFS there was footage on the ABC news and Foreign Correspondent of them wearing CK jeans and a woman had a Gucci bag....How do I know? The footage actually showed logos!! DO NOT, EVER bring your bias to youtube....Just respond to a question asked in the video, and move on. There are plenty of Americans and eastern European trolls flooding every comment section with bias already!
DO MORE HILLTOP HOODS
Can you believe what we are to come?
If these lyrics don’t make you take a good hard look at the world
There’s no hope for humanity
Dude you are smart af. Even when you guess you know.
If Billy Joel was an Australian rapper...
( We Didn't Start The Fire )
They want to know where the resources went? Bags not tell. 🌎🌏🌍🌹✔️
All time favourite song. Been following HTH since i was 10, now 24. Great reaction mate. Check out shredding the balloon and stopping at all stations.
If you’re hurting and you don’t want to, why would you wish it on your worst enemy?
I believe the word you are looking for is "syncopation" in relation to their flow.
Whitlam, hawk and keating were prime ministers of australia who promised that by 1990 there will be no child living in poverty.
Dodi was princess diannas partner (a muslim, and Dianna was supposedly pregnant to Dodi - this is why they say she was murdered in a "car crash".
You are spot on about the refugees not being able to come into the country and the horrible way that they are treated in "detention centers".Also the line "kindneys to captain of industries" (or something like that) is attributed to china harvesting organs (hearts, lungs, kidneys) out of the "falun gong" (who were a peaceful meditative healthy people that the Chineese killed and tortured in the most horrible of ways) - you should look into the falun gong people.
The pedophile thing is a institutionalised system of covering up pedophilia in Australia and across the world. But in this case they intentionally let pedophiles in schools as teachers in the 1990's and 2000's in Australia.
The speech was Hawke with Keeting as treasurer and he screwed up the like “No Australia child need live in poverty” and instead said “No Australian child will live in poverty” during a speech about welfare payments.
@@deviouskris3012 thanks for the clarification.. I moved to Australia just before this and was only a lil pup back then :P
or cadence
Oh wow, only person i have ever seen do a reaction to this song that found the meaning in the lyrics, everyone else listens but it hardly registers. They even discuss how genital mutilation of male children caused the HIV/AIDS epidemic in this song lol
"STDs cause the sleeve ain't sexy,
AIDS shook the eighties, grim reaper with a bowling ball,"
51:20 Australia had a huge issue (thought it was world wide) with priests in schools raping children, they set trials for them, then just move them to new states. for me these are the hardest hitting lines in the song, so much pain in it saying what happened to the cubs? they fed them to the wolves. so cold
There’s this really good Australian movie called the sum of us
Blue sky mines is a song by mindnight oil
ragen started the "drug war" starting the mandatory minimum sentences manny in the world see ragen as a monster
That was a great review.
Good job mate
Do more Hilltop reactions buddy looked for some more from you.
Another Australian band who are legendary Midnight Oil put out an album called blue sky mines
Wow.
I love falling downstairs
This is along the lines of Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire....
31:09 Alliteration
Flying around with all the Ammunition and no-where to dump it
Keeps their family alive 1 year
We had Abbott and Castello in the Australian government system and it wasn’t that long ago
Listen to Twenty Ten by Tinkerbells Fairydust and this song will make perfect sense.
glad you got the title damn fine song
cubs are the young lads before they are awarded scout badge
How can you listen to a song like this. Play it once then do this. You don’t even get to appreciate it.
Amazing how a little known (outside Oz) Rap/ Hiphop or whatever you'd like to describe these guys band can be so articulate and knowledgeable of world history. American version is mostly intolerable, nonsensical, SHIT. Endless, talentless SHIT.
Assange free ❤
It's sad that this is the only decent reaction to this song
All the rest just nod along commenting on the beat and not adding anything to it
It's sad that the one that bothers to explain the things has so little views
They’ve sold your kids before you’ve even had them
Planet are you on?
You probably know by now this came out in 2009.
Nice hat
Pyramid building - check it out!
Ty for breakdown
Another hilltop hoods song with be last confession
Sport on
Again, again!!
❤ integration
Was tru
If you don't think Reagan was a monster, you did not pay attention to Reaganite policies
X
Yeah you're right dude, you know nothing of Australia... We Aussie hip hop heads know most American events and are familiar with it's history. It's a shame you missed the point in so many bars.
"Thay" are alwase to blame the "Other" not "One of Us" "Thay"
Whitlam Keating and Hawke were all prime ministers of Australia. And the promise was just lies anyway.
It was actually Hawke saying will instead of need, during a speech about raising base welfare payments and additional child payments. He said “No Australian child will live in poverty”. When the speech said “No Australian child need live in poverty”. Naturally it was a comment that came back to bite him on the arse later.
You love politics way too much my man. It was a quick analysis. Stick to changing the world pal
@@williamwells7137 I was studying related topics at the time when it happened. I love how single words changed or missed can alter things. Much like Armstrong saying “One small step for ‘a’ man”. But because of a micro hitch in the audio, we all remember it as “one small step for man”.
2009
You should react to (Bliss n eso - golden years) they’re along side with Hilltop as Australian OGs of rap down under, in my opinion they’re actually better than HTH
Reflections is also another beautiful song about life.
"The Sea is Rising" is a great one too. I love that most Australian rappers I know of can also carry a melody, and produce music. Keeps that personal DIY feeling that is so lacking in mainstream music.
Love BnE and Hilltop who began on The Obese Records label owned by Pegz who along with Reason were a couple of the Oz Hip hop O.G's, The Herd are right there too.
@@adamcooper1898 even spit syndicate and horror show 👌🏼
@@urmcchromez9426 Yep!, TZU, Downsyde, Muph and Plutonic, there's heaps of older top quality. 1200 Techniques and the Herd were probably the first l was into but l love and them and have seen them all heaps years ago.
