    Great video - thank you! I just re-potted my first Sago palm. I’m laughing because at the end of your video, the transcribed text at the bottom of the screen showed “psycho palm” instead of “sago palm!” 🤣

    Mine is growing in the garden and is probably 15 years old and has only started to put more growth on now, no flowers or seeds yet and now I will move it as I have a dog that likes chewing on plants. I have just checked it and it does have scale so there's another job to do! Your stories are OK, when you have a garden and not much knowledge it's handy to have someone to listen to.

    I have one of these in the front of my house in Florida. Anyways, the one plant I have sprouts mini plants like this by the dozen every year. The main plant is huge and grows at an incredible rate.

    My sago is about two years old now with huge growth on its second leaf set. The base is getting bigger in the past few months, so I think it's about to grow a third set. I keep mine in sand and loose soil. Seems to like it. Very, very tough plants. Mine also had a nasty spill a while back before I repotted it in the sandy soil. It did fine and now is so heavy it doesn't wobble in the wind at all.

    You must live in the north. Here in the south, my two inground cycads are monsters with trunks reaching about four feet high and the fronds topping out at six or seven feet with at least a dozen pups growing under each one. From what I can tell, I only get one ring of fronds per year, but it is always a big ring with 20 to 30 fronds. On one of the cycads, I just sawed off two branches because it was becoming a multi-headed hydra.

    The leaves of sago only develop wel in ful direct sun( not behind glas). The difference in size in this one is to much because of lack of light, the needles aren t spiky enough and the leafs look fluffy, i m not trying to be harsh, but i know this because i experienced it too with my sago.
    Put it next flush in ful sun and you l get a more typical sago leaf!

    I would like to know if my 2 large Segos are alive after our last extreme winter in Texas. It’s now end of April and the crown is still brown with no apparent new growth. One has 2 pups with new green growth, but the mother plant doesn’t. I see other Segos in my neighborhood with green new growth on the crown. Should I assume mine are dead? Is it possible to have alive pups from a dead mother Sego? Please advise.

      Hi Fioan, I think you might have Asian scale. Done some research and the organic cure for this is by applying used coffee grounds. Use as mulch in the soil as well as pouring it on plant by seeping the coffee grounds in water. Google coffee grounds on cycads. Interesting read.Your local coffee house will probable give you their used coffee grounds for free. Try Starbucks.Good luck.

I re-potted it recently and the roots are healthy and seem to be growing. I have it in my bathroom directly under a roof window.I did have it in a very large deep pot. +Dee Dee Moore you need to check with a expect as sagos should have seeds +Ruby Wilson both male and female have a elongated pinapple type shape seed,, the male has flat seed which if you get early and dust into bag you can polinate the female which produce elongated seeds but red in colour , if you like I can send you photos if you message me...
      I am not sure how old my two are as I have only been here 5 years but the male has had seed for a couple of years and I noticed the female this year, WHY, they are in different place in yard not near each other.... There is a third one that was in pot and which is now in front yard so will see how long before seeds.. and I have a baby
      The cycads are awesome.. and with nice pruning make awesome shelters to sit under in summer or winter to have breakfast or just a cuppa and enjoy the view. :)

I live in the north of Sweden and it's starting to get very dark now, but even during the bright summer it yellowed. I don't water it a lot. What could be wrong? I always cut the dead leafs.

    • @GrowingDownUnder
      @GrowingDownUnder 7 років тому +2

      they need a lot of water until well established, so if it's new you have to give it plenty of water. I often find if it's in the ground (not in a pot) that watering with a hose or watering can above soil level just causes runoff and doesn't penetrate the soil well. Try installing drip line irrigation for slow watering which penetrates the soil better and more evenly. Also don't forget to mulch your soil manure, leaves or composted wood chips is a good choice to promote a fungal dominant soil....and about the yellowing it's caused by a lack of nitrogen those plants come from environments with rich soil so try adding sand & compost,leaf mould or worm castings to your soil and fertilize every few weeks with liquid seaweed/kelp & fish emulsion
