  • In less than a week, Volusia County has experienced four shark attacks, with incidents reported in New Smyrna Beach, Ponce Inlet, and, most recently, Daytona Beach Shores. Two people were bitten at New Smyrna Beach, and another was attacked in Ponce Inlet. On Wednesday, a 14-year-old boy visiting from Missouri was bitten on his foot while at Daytona Beach Shores.

Your chance of getting bit by a shark are extremely low, but they go up if you go in the water.

You’re thinking of great whites. They typically feed on seals (they’re usually in colder waters). Tiger sharks, especially in this area, feed on fish… and Florida is known to have brightly colored fish in our waters (like the rainbow reef parrot, as an example).

Murky water (poor visibiliy)...is a big reason too...coupled up with flashes of reflected objects...Its not so much colors... as it is the quick flashes movement and sounds that attract their attention...they also test bite often to see what an object is...But like they said above NEVER SWIM NEAR BEACH FISHING!!! This can be difficult if current is running parallel to the beach...the bait "flavor" can flow for 1/2 a mile down range..and be no where near the fisherman.

There’s thousands and thousands of sharks there’s not thousands and thousands of bears or mountain lions or whatever else that’s on that we shoot just cause they were a little hungry?! I’m not saying that we should shoot the sharks but we shouldn’t shoot innocent animals after biting someone on land!
