SLAPPED (BALD HEAD)
The man who slapped his head was Shūmei Ōkawa, also a Japanese nationalist who was accused of war crimes and attempting a coup.
His erratic behaviour in court led to officials believing that he was not mentally fit to stand trial, hence all cases against him were dropped. Other defendants were either hung to death or spent their life in prison while Ōkawa however was set free.
That slap was a power move indeed.
"Other defendants were either hung to death or spent their life in prison"
Yeah but weren't there other defendants who were exonerated as well? I've read that MacArthur's occupational government was pretty lenient (e.g. not charging the emperor) so as to breed resentment from the public.
Bro just saved his life by slapping a bald hear
@@Zircillius Yep, and on top of that, only the first round of trials actually occurred. This first one were the supposed worst war criminals, while there were two other rounds that would have covered some less prolific offenders, but these subsequent rounds of trials were dropped after tensions with the USSR/CCP increased as well as some PR headaches that went on during the first round of trials. Many of those indicted criminals slated for the later rounds of trials went right back into the political and bureaucratic positions they'd held before the Allied victory. Members of the imperial family (one of which was technically in charge, albeit temporarily, during at least part of the Nanjing massacre) were never even considered for indictment, and other serious offenders, like Shiro Ishii--who ran Unit 731--were never charged in the first place either.
MacArthur wanted to leverage the imperial family as a national unifying tool during the occupation, hence not charging any of them at all. Men like Shiro Ishii were likely not charged in case they held useful intelligence or research that could potentially end up in Soviet hands (though Unit 731 produced exactly zero usable and novel research for the Americans).
@@biffman6 shiro Ishii despite being disgusting monster most his target are white Russian emigree and Chinese outcast make any of power didn't really take his action seriously.

Here’s some background about the slap. The slapper was the Japanese propaganda minister named Shumei Okawa . He was eventually never charged with anything because he was deemed too mentally ill to stand trial. He was known for exhibiting odd behavior in court such as slapping others, wearing his pajamas to trial, and being barefoot when the situation didn’t require it. Kinky humor
Maybe he was humorless during the war because he was, I dont know, a military officer making decisions that may or may not kill thousands of young Japanese troops?
He was probably in a "I'm fucked anyway anyhow so might as well enjoy the show while I'm at it" state of mind during the trial so he no longer had to maintain that cold facade.
Maybe it's because he knows the man's game. He thinks the cowardice/ridiculousness/gullibility of the allies is amusing? I don't know much about Tojo but tbh that was funny shit and even more so if you know he's probably only doing it to get off.

It's multiple crimes. Like a Missing Persons division of a police force. The crime is Missing Person, and there are multiple cases, so it's Missing Persons rather than Missing People. Here it's Wholesale Murders rather than Mass Murder.
If we're talking about wholesale murders, shouldn't the US and their president, Harry Truman, be on trial as well? He incinerated 250,000+ innocent children, mothers, and fathers, who were just living their lives in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Those people had nothing to do with anything. And hundreds of thousands more suffered years of radiation sickness, which eventually led to further deaths. Those atomic bombs were no different than what the Japanese did in Manchuria, Korea, and elsewhere.

For those who don't know, slapping someone on the head is a gesture in Japanese culture for basically calling someone a "big dummy." We slap our own head to acknowledge our own misguided behavior. It's partly done in jest, but only do this with family and close friends.
Applies in America too. Although I see facepalm/slapping more often lol.
It's kind of done similarly in the West, though we tend to do the shoulder punch rather or grasp rather than a slap across the back of the head.

I love the way this is titled. It's in all caps, indicating that Tojo's head being slapped is important and urgent. Second, it just refers to him as "Tojo" and nothing else, as if he's a close friend, informal in comparison to the urgency being conveyed, and not even referring to his title (like one might say President Biden, President Xi, President Putin, etc.) Third, it just randomly says "(BALD)" as if extremely necessary to specify that Tojo's head is bald. @@scl1332 They did a little trolling.
@Nero X Yes, this was the #1 thing about the whole Tojo affair. The imperial family needed a fall-guy, because Japan without an emperor would have turned into jelly or something? I mean I get it, if you execute the emperor you're going to fuck up the rebuilding efforts and have to deal with a likely insurgency. However, kill the man who "lost the war for Japan?" Fuck yeah, let's all cut a chunk off him! And so Japan gets built back up as a stable, friendly-to-the-West presence in the Pacific *and* the Japanese get to exorcise their war demons. It was certainly a pragmatic move, if nothing else.
I love how Tojo laughed, at least he had a good sense of humor
he was famous for having no sense of humor actually. But, he's in the middle of a trial that will almost certainly end in his death (it did), so might as well smile while he can.

Tojo wasn’t the leader when Japan started the war with China

Erik Blue Hirohito was indeed a figurehead but I think he meant that there was another Prime Minister.

What I absolutely love about this is that in 'the real world' of Imperial Japan no one would have been able to get away with slapping that man's head in that way. Tojo was such as powerful man that such an act would be unthinkable. But the loss of the war and the subsequent dismantling of the old system so thoroughly destroyed their social system that the doctor gave the most powerful man in their world a cheeky head slap and got away with it fine. Even more bizarrely - Tojo HIMSELF has a laugh about it. It's as if he's accepted his fate.
No more controlling vast swathes of territories. No more determining the fates of hundreds of millions of people. He's just a human being stuck in a court room with other human beings.
It didn't destroy their social system whatsoever, it barely even changed. Only the state changed hands and laws and such were dictated (haphazardly) by America. MacArthur just became the new military dictator and Tojo was moved to a position of powerlessness. Such social systems may appear 'unnatural' or rigid but are in fact highly pragmatic and have no problem with this.
Hundreds of millions?

Politics, my friend. Politics has little room for light-hearted social interactions; even more so when your politics involves struggle.
@axel axel I just watched a video of a guy pushing to the floor a 90-year-old elderly man. He didn't even know the old guy and had never had any contact with him, just pushed him from behind without saying a word and kept walking. A few days ago I saw another video of a guy assaulting and beating up a woman who was just reading the newspaper while sitting on a train. Again, they didn't know each other and didn't exchange a word before the attack. In both cases was later revealed that the reason for the attacks was because the victims were from a different race than the assailant. Please do not tell me that there are no bad people in this world.
There were many more, some MORE responsible than Tojo.
He answered for alot of other mens crimes for sure.
I can't say he was a noble man.
