  • Said to be the tallest building in Buckinghamshire, due for demolision very soon. Built as an accomodation block back in 1969.
    This is the journey down the tower block, but (sigh!) it's unfinished!!

    I was a caretaker of high rise flats for many years . This all looks so familier I take it this has reached its 50 th birthday and it was decision time .
    Did you know all residential tower blocks in the uk all had short life expectancy . After a certain amount of time (40 -50 years) a decision has to be made whether to demolish or refurbish them .
    They were built as fast replacement housing not for longevity great video as ever . Cheers Mitch.

      This site has been closed for a long time. Previously, manned security were on site 24 hours. But over the last 2 years, no more security as the site was sold to developers. The tower block is set for demolition to make way for new houses. Thanks for the comment Mitch.

      Would be great to hear your stories as a caretaker. did you get to go up onto the roof when you needed a rest? It must be an entirely different world as a caretaker, getting to see behind the scenes, seeing the machinery that made these buildings function as people's homes.

    2:33 It seems that each floor has 4 units with two rooms. I think that each unit consisted in a bedroom and a little kitchen. Toilets and showers were common (via the central corridor). Single glass (2:55), and no wall insulaton. A large heat loss area compared to the floor area. So: difficult to improve the overall degree of insulation. Strange concept: a building on mushroom colums, windows in the corners, little private space, no common space, ... | Safety: elevators in central corridor (that leads to fire escape stairs). In case of a fire the elevator shaft would spread the fire / smoke to the corridor. The residents would be trapped in their rooms. And the fire exit has some problems to. Conclusion: safety concerns (difficult to adapt to contemporary standards) and not fit for other use; to dimolish.

      I wish I had more footage! Yes, 4 units. One has a toilet (I believe) but the others use the communial toilet and bath accessed in the lift lobby. Very old style! Was fit for purpose, but that's about it!

    Fascinating videos, as ever. These buildings intrigue me - my old block of flats used to be an office and there were vast, huge rooms full of 70s compressors, air handling, boilers, water tanks (they scare me too), telecoms equipment (mostly taken now), transformers as big as a car, fire systems etc. I'm fascinated by the different world that we don't see as regular users. And it's so sad that these amazing buildings are going - new ones are very standardised so I doubt we will see anything as cool when the modern buildings start to crumble.

    Seems odd that there would be such an increase in security for something that doesn't really have any high value and is slated for demolition. There might have been some incident that occurred there.

      I suppose the owners of the land would be responsible if anyone were to be injured, or even if someone set fire to the tower. Coincidentally, some set light to one of the lower buildings only a couple of weeks ago!

    architecturally kind of cool for the era, a bit more interesting than a lot of other tower blocks from the 60s/70s. i dig the large corner windows with continuous glass, the cantilevered tower on its open base and lots of wood inside in the lobby and the entry doors on each floor.
    that nearby lowrise directly to the east has strong le corbusian vibes. i wonder who the original architects of both of these buildings were.

      Any on-site security would deter me, as my style is to enter secretly and not draw attention to my presence. Any unit that alerts a third party to my presence, rather not bother than end up on some kind of police database.

    is it possible to ask the owner (or developer in this case) for access into the tower?
    Edit : oh wait, you sneak into the buildings before. def not possible

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  2 роки тому +9

      I did actually "officially" request to access the tower. Wrote about 4 emails, no response to any. My experience is, MOST (not all) will not entertain such a request for many reasons. 1) red tape, 2) the person that allowed it could be reprimanded by his superiors for allowing it, 3) H&S, if I were to be injured then the company/person would be responsible, 4) urbexers have a bad name, 5) time and effort for the person/company to make it happen for no return (i.e. why WOULD they allow it, for what reason, for 'my' benefit? but why).
      50% of such requests are ignored. 25% reply and quote "due to H&S". The very few that do say yes, when more people get involved it changes to no!
      Thanks for the comment though! :)

    When was the 2nd and 3rd clip shot? I also guess that they were tired of having people ruining the boards and breaking in so they increased security. I am suggesting that you could ask permission to explore this tower since they might be nice enough.

      I asked permission to have a look at the tower about 4 years ago. Despite 4 separate emails, no one ever replied. Like always, it seems that going to "proper route" just ends up with a lot of time being spent and getting no-where! :(

      @SeanBZA 2 роки тому +2

      More than likely too expensive to maintain, and the building needed to be upgraded, but the council was not wanting to spend that amount of money for the upgrade, with little prospect for getting it back, as likely the tenants were either slowly dwindling due to area changes, or it was social housing and not enough people living there to make it worthwhile, and too far from any amenities to make it worthwhile upgrading to a higher paying tenant crowd.

    • @Mitch-Hendren

      Decision has to be made After approx 50 years to refurbish or replace .
      The amount of green land that has to be left between tower blocks in most areas (but not all) usualky means the same amount of dwellings can be accommodated in low rise Housing , so replacement in the long term is cheaper . High rise flats are very expensive to run and maintain but extremely fast to build .
