what a nice and helpful review that was, and the quality of the vid! great style, like a lot. keep on doing it like that and soon you´ll be the next big whatever you want to be
I love mine and it’s sturdy too. Ive been roughing mine up just traveling with it. I use it like most people use a book when they travel, and it been up to the task. I’ve dropped it spilled on it and it’s cool and jamming. It beats my volcas because it does everything 3 of them do. With the cutoff low you get drum like sounds too, and the price makes me want another one.
If this isn't the best synth review on YT then Idk which is. The production quality is amazing, I've only watched your Volca reviews but have subbed after watching this video, its the icing on the cake! Keep up the great work!
Can I just say I love your videos. They are top-notch, well produced awesomeness- It's a great day when I see that you have a new video out....every time.
João Donadel I wouldn’t chose the IK over any Volca. It’s too pricey and the build isn’t as good as I’d like. To me it sounds better than the Volca Keys.
I have quickly learned that GC super sucks. They sold me a Sterling Stingray bass that was missing a screw in the bridge (yeah, I should have noticed, but still), and then I obviously went back to ask for a new one. After a week, the new one came, and it's mostly fine, but I thought I'd test it before I left the store. Then, while I was in the bass room testing, I saw the very bass I returned back up on the wall. Full price, still missing its screw. Take your business elsewhere if you can.
I had a similar experience with their Musician's Friend subsidiary. I received a defective Alesis Andromeda from them. I documented all the problems with it and sent it back. Since they had no more in stock, I agreed to wait til another one was available rather than receive a refund. Several days later, one showed up on the website so I snatched it up. When it arrived a few days later I discovered IT WAS THE SAME UNIT I HAD RETURNED - defects and all!! They had taken the unit I returned to them, along with the list of defects, and returned it to stock.
Maverick yeah, I only buy with Sweetwater when I buy online, and I shop local when I want to try something. I would say that you should buy from local music stores when possible.
What an Incredible video! You really captured the "Feed the beast" nature of Eurorack. This review of the Uno almost makes me want to sell my combo of Tetra + MIDI keyboard. The Uno's portability makes it super tempting, but I think playability would be my biggest concern, as well as its lack of polyphony.
I've never heard of the Uno synth b4 till I watch your little video I'm interested in getting new gear later in the year I might have to check this one out
Damn this was damn awesome!! Very cool nod to The Simpsons Halloween Specials. Personally conflicted about the Uno. I LOVE the portability especially as a synth to take to work for lunchtime noodleing but am concerned about the digital aspects.
Thanks Ed, I totally tried to give nods to many influences of mine! Don't be too concerned about the digital aspect. The delay is the only part that isn't what I'd call...great.
@@NoirEtBlancVie Love the modular spaghetti monster! Heee. Also, you helped me finalize my own opinion of the Uno with your great review, so thank you for that!
Cool video...great humour and a good honest review. If I didn't already own a bunch of Volcas I'd be interested in this but... You nailed it with your comments. 3 Years ago i would have bought this without question, but today I just don't need it. Thanks for the review and keep up the amazing work. Love your stuff!
I was waiting for the next halloween special and you didn't disappoint! Amazing work dude! The killer for me with the Uno is how much of the parameter editing is only available with the software editor.
Yeah, exactly ... it's especially a shame as I think they could have added a lot more to the matrix with fairly minimal and cheap hardware changes (e.g. to double the parameters on a row, add another LED and have the row-select button toggle between the different parameter sets for the row). [For me the original Evolver is the supreme example of how to do a parameter matrix right. It has like eleventy bazillion parameters, but editing all of them from the front panel is fairly obvious and not too difficult, and doesn't really require a manual if you're familiar with the synth.]
Nice Video , no mention of being able to record automation using the sequencer and adding automation after you have made a sequence using ALT record , no mention of updated functions like full ADSR on both the filter and envelope. I rate this synth 8/10
You make valid points. I guess I always rate things how I personally use them and emotionally feel about them. I’ve never liked reviews that pick apart all the features, it just becomes easy to just watch another review. Feature sets are easy to read off a companies website. Kinda like how I said “because it says so on the box”. Lol.
Oh and also realize these scores are all kind of in jest. Scored for personally subjective opinions are hard. What is a 1, what is a 10...what’s the baseline? Just wanted state that. These reviews are just personality driven from my experience and how I personally use it. Which is why I can say that it’s not for me subjectively, but objectively it is good for what it is.
Could you please do a review on the new dreadbox meadusa? It seems like such an awesome synth but when I look around online about it ppl say that it's terrible. I'd love to hear your thoughts on on the thing!
If you can get Dreadbox to send me one as like a “here, no strings attached” I’d definitely take a look. Like anything I can’t just buy synths, I also don’t like getting synths from companies. It ends up that I can’t be as honest about the negative aspects as I’d like to be. It’s a weird conflict of interest. The Erebus was such a great piece, I owned on back in like 2015...surprised people aren’t liking the new offering.
@@NoirEtBlancVie dude I wish I had one to send but sadly don't have the money. I've never owned a synth from dreadbox but after hearing some demos from the Erebus v3 they definitely seem like they make cool stuff. I just sorta wanted to know what you think about their newest synth. Ty for the reply tho!
Agreed. It’s definitely a great offering from IK. They did something at a price I haven’t seen before. I think their next Synth will be much better...at least I hope!
Does the "audio in" pass thru , or is incoming audio modulated by synth and on board effects ? I will check their product page... I didn't really come here to get product knowledge. The stats are merely informative whereas YOUR reviews are instructive on a deeper ,and much more entertaining level . I especially appreciate that you demonstrate , and explain with sound , instead of just talking , or just jamming (but I wouldn't mind if you jammed for a couple of minutes after the review 😊).
First: Welcome Back, pal! Then: Nice review of this little machine. I think what you get for the price is really cool. The knobs aren‘t the best (I always see myself having trouble to select the wanted value for a parameter) and the touch keys are... 🤔 flat... it‘s super portable and sounds imho really cool. Some of the presets are really good. Not to forget: There are free official editor apps for PC, Mac and iOS, which make sound design even easier!
Watch out for that euro! It plays for keeps. Makes wallets cry. Very fair and pleasant review. I really like the atmosphere you made with the uno sound. I had one of these for an afternoon. Sadly I struck out with it. 1, no master tune function, 2, very noisy line out while powered by USB and, 3 freaked right out when I tried running midi from my daw. Is too bad too. I really wanted to keep this little synth. It's one of the best sounding pieces of analog plastic I've come across. I wish they had booted the price point up a little and added an extra notch of quality. oh well. maybe uno 2.0?
Thank you for talking about the noise when powered via USB. I experienced the exact same thing. I wasn’t sure if it was just me so I didn’t want to put it out there. The noise you mention is unacceptable and I had to always use batteries
Thank you Zack, I know that ADSR Music Production channel has a great video covering not just the hardware, but the software as well. I’m not the best at doing tutorials (I don’t like doing them haha) All that said I really am glad you could get something from this. I bought two UNO’s one from GC and one from Amazon and they both performed well so quality wise I’m glad the QC for such a cheap synth seems good. For the price you can’t beat it!
I think you should definitely (if you have the 580$ for it) buy the Minibrute 2/2S. It's great for using it with your modular gear and really flexible, too. I've played it for a long time now and it's really worth the money. I think it'd be a good synth for you.
This thing is often on sale for $100 - only Volca Bass and keys are in the same league at that price, but the Uno is more versatile. I love all 3 personally!
Some good demos here but 6/10? No man. This is 10/10! $199, 2 oscillators, pulse width (and rare ability to morph the waveforms in an analog synth), fat filter, light to carry, built-in sequencing and fx... it's a no brainer. For some it could be their only monophonic synth and for many others it's something to have in addition. It sounds so good for the price!
Eh, it was alright. I mean it wasn’t “terrible” by any means. I just call it like I see it, also realize the scores are a joke. Rating something with numbers is kind of a joke when speaking subjectively...where’s the baseline? So that’s why if you watch other reviews I do it’s always scored for the most part in jest. Cause my 7 could be your 10 or vice versa. It was an alright synth, for a person just starting this is great. The price and performance are unbeatable in the market right now. I judge pieces on how they make me feel when I use them, not based on how many of this and how many that they have. You make valid points though! Thank you :)
You do a great job demonstrating it and ironically it sounds really impressive in what you've done, much better than "alright" sounding. But, of course, this is all subjective. I'm offering up some balance to claims you've made where I disagree. For example, you say it's good for beginners. It is. But, it's also super handy and great for pros as well. I've owned almost every vintage synth ever made from Moogs to Arps to EMS to Serge Modular systems to you name it. I love them. But, I still find UNO SYNTH useful because it sounds great and it's ultra portable. It's so light! I can throw a synth into my laptop bag??? What??? Dude! Pros LOVE this piece. Trust me you're wrong on that assumption. It may not be for you but it's for anyone looking for a portable analog synth... and yes it's also great for beginners too.
Exactly what I said :) I think if you quote me I said. “it may not be for me, but it’s honestly the best choice”. That’s what I’ve learned, as a professional musician I realize we all have workflows. I think that’s what makes me kind of bad at reviewing things at times for a broader audience. I have my workflow for clients, for artists for sound library work to be efficient and creative all in one. So I definitely can come across as “if it doesn’t work for me it’s not great” I guess it’s an accurate perspective from a person in my position. I see lots of objective reviews form Synth UA-camrs, but I try and be purely subjective. That’s not always the best as we can’t really knows everyone’s sensibilities :)
Very true and well said! Either way you do a great job on your reviews and people should always listen, think about it and decide for themselves. If I was watching your video and was looking for an affordable analog synth that I could carry around with me everywhere I'd buy it based on just what's been shown in your video, whether it was my first synth or my 50th. I don't think you're bad at reviewing things. You give your honest opinion on how it relates to you. That's genuine. We can't ask for more than that. It's just ironic that you make it sound and look so tasty! Nice one on doing the demo with just the UNO SYNTH as well. You put a lot of effort into your reviews and that's rare.
Yooo I was going to scoop this two weeks ago. But got the MicroBrute instead, def happy with my choice. This little things looks like it could be a cool toy though
This is probably the best review of the uno I've seen. Great job! I'm a synth noob; around 4:57 you plug the Uno in a box. What is the purpose of that box?
Noir Et Blanc Vie indeed! Spotted at the beginning and at the end. So are you a fan of the series or the movies? I've got all the series but only half of the movies...The animated one is one of the better movies though!
I was looking for a good bass synth to play live with (with a sequencer and patch memory) is the UNO practical for live use or should I go with something like the korg monologue?
Got to try an uno at a synth convention in LA. Out of the dozen or so synths that day I ended up liking it the most. It was an even bigger surprise than the Waldorf Quantum. Note "surprise", obviously it isn't a tenth of the synth the Quantum is. It's filter blew me away though, topping even the Matrixbrute in raw squelch (but not in versatility). …it's definitely not a jack of all trades.
@@NoirEtBlancVie Like you say in your review, it's pretty darn good for the price point. Next time you find yourself around the uno do a full resonance filter sweep and compare the squelch with anything else you have laying around. The uno sounds super good to me in that regard almost like an MS-20 but even dirtier actually. I was literally going around testing full reso sweeps on saws with everyone's synths and the uno really stood out. Side note, I'm surprised you didn't like the Prologue! That filter can be both clinically clean but then gets some nice grit with the flip of a switch.
You aren’t wrong about the filter, the resonance is blazing when you crank it. Though, I think as a producer, I’m always thinking about practicality. Synths are tough because half the sounds you hear when people test them are never usable in actual song that artists are hiring me to create with them. That being said. The control of a filter is more important than the absolute end to end scope of that makes sense. Keep in mind, I can only review from my sensibilities and subjective tastes because, well, that’s all I know. I tried to say that it wasn’t for me, but I can see how someone else would find this great. I even picked it for the BoBeats best of 2018 video.
Some high video production values here! Good show!. As for the synth in question, it seems to be a step up from the aging Volcas and way cheaper than the Roland Boutiques.. Caveats are the iffy build quality, the MIDI dongles, the 3-digit LED-only window to its inner workings and the membrane switches (I guess the Big 80's are back!?). But overall, this is a decent option for beginners.
Agreed John, while I’ve received flack for stating this is great for beginners I stick by what I said. You bring up a good point about the LCD, why couldn’t they have done OLED with more characters? That’s a big downside to me unfortunately. The membrane panel, is just alright, I can’t play it like I want to.
Bought the thing a while ago. And even if it’s not particularly useful for making music it’s just fun. Tho, I can’t say about how useful it is for music
Dude, this one was definitely late. I find myself giving myself two weeks to slowly work on it. Then when I get to the edit I find myself redoing voice overs and then making all the music and coloring it. It seems so much easier when I''m drawing the storyboard. I'm super happy you enjoyed it. It's the most fun I have all year too :)

Great review, sounds surprisingly good! Also a very fun video, but wow, looks to have been a lot of work! Excellent!
It was a lot of work, but worth it for the comment!
Great work man! Thanks for the extra effort.
I love all 3 personally!
why the reviews are called one minute reviews if they are a bunch of minutes 🤔🤔🤔
It’s a joke for long time fans
Do you need to mention it without to think about why for yourself? Strange human
@@bembeleee i made a terrible joke
those floating patch cables had me in stitches.
HAHAHAH thanks Rik, that was the hardest part. I wanted to do practical effects. Semi worked out.
Love your stuff! Keep up the good reviews
Subscribed from the intro alone 😆
Very informative video! Thank you for sharing this!
Yooo I was going to scoop this two weeks ago. But got the MicroBrute instead, def happy with my choice. This little things looks like it could be a cool toy though
It's a cool toy for sure, probably the most interesting small portable around. I'd like more functionality, but overall, it's cheap and fun.
Really you should have more veiwd or be a film director , this is good ,better than what our BBC can make
This is probably the best review of the uno I've seen. Great job!
I'm a synth noob; around 4:57 you plug the Uno in a box. What is the purpose of that box?
Ohhh it’s a DI box, it’s so I can connect it to a mic pre using XLR
Well done, creative !
Instant like for the highlander reference
Hahaha you got them! Winner winner. There were two!
Interesting. I definitely found it on par with many other synths, but nothing stood out and made me say “WOW”.
Hahaha wow dude! Are you showing this synth review in Cannes as well?
🤔hmm you bring up a good point. You know how the AVGN inspired this channel to start, so I’m just trying to reach his level 🙃
Can you plug a stylophone to it and use the stylo sounds with the uno's sequencer?
Great review, unbiased as I like it and Sir, Cal is surely for California, no matter what they say :)
You’re damn right it does! 😎☀️
Bought the thing a while ago. And even if it’s not particularly useful for making music it’s just fun. Tho, I can’t say about how useful it is for music
I agree.
Great video! Review was very informative.
😱 Agree! 😎 Cool review. 👍
Haha. Is it sad that your halloween specials are the highlight of my youtube year? :)
@@NoirEtBlancVie with the orange terrorist in the white house, every day is halloween. Thanks for the intelligent distraction. :)
Another spooky video just in time for [checks notes] Election Day.
HAHAHAHA vote a thumbs up on this for me :) :)
Voting ain't no joke. I'm freaked tha fook out! Gud vid tho. @@NoirEtBlancVie
Ha ha. Brilliant video w/ excellent production value. And a good objective review. :-)
Thanks you Maneer!
Your channel has inspired me.
Well I hope in a good way Miller, I enjoy doing what I do. It’s just me enjoying making videos :)
Man this is so good ❤️
Will it take a guitar with the "in" jack?
