I picked up at couple of vintage patterns earlier in the year and didn't have an idea how I was going to use them till this video. I really struggle to find things to use for my Journals in Charity shops, other than books that is. Occasionally I'm able to find things like the sewing patterns in one particular charity shop but mostly I go home empty handed. Plus only a couple of the shops seem to have vintage books and they use them as shop decoration and the books quite often are not for sale or when I ask how much they are, the staff come up with a silly price. I was recently quoted £5 for a book that was literally falling to pieces and was basically fit for the bin, I liked it because the pages were old and had a great colour but it certainly wasn't anything special. In fact in general Charity shops local to me seem to be putting unrealistic prices on there items. A staff member in the one shop I occasionally am lucky enough to find something interesting in, once asked me what I was using the things I bought for. When I told her I used them to make Vintage Junk Journals, she pulled a face and since then I've learnt not to ask her for a price on an item I'm interested in because I'm sure she doubles the amount she'd quote anyone else. Unfortunately she seems to be in the shop virtually everytime I pop in, so if I do find something I want to buy and it doesn't have a price on it, I usually don't end up buying it because I know she'll put a total ridiculous price on it when I end up asking, how much I is. I don't sell the Journals I make, there just for myself or a very occasional gift, so I can't afford to pay silly prices for the things I find.
Yes lol we have to be very creative...LOL I would check out Amazon for books and World of Books in the UK. I get a lot from there... Ebay os good too but I dont use it to be honest. Finding an antique store or vintage store may give you better options too x
Great video! here in Switzerland it is very difficult to find vintage patterns. I know in the UK you have sooo much amazing driftstores. Oh those great vintage clothes!!! After the pandemic I think even more, lots of people cleaned up their houses to spend their time at home good.
I have hundreds of patterns, '60's-80's... they are some of the few items that survived when my sewing room was destroyed by a gushing water heater. I toyed with the idea of selling them but now will 'ephemer-ize' them instead... sewing journals are soon to be started! Thanks for the inspiration!
You are a phenomenal artist. You have a great eye for space and placement. Don’t be so hard on yourself, u r brilliant on screen. Whatever u think is a problem is just in ur own head... we cannot see it. All I see is an amazing artist!
I just love your journals made using vintage patterns! What an awesome idea to use the envelope for the front and back covers! I am inspired and l can’t wait to use your wonderful ideas to make my own junk journal! Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful creations!
I'm seeing this a year later. Thank you for saving these old patterns from the landfill. I have bunches of them and was thinking of a sewing journal as well. I'm surely inspired to make a bunch of tags etc. Thank you!
Really like these tags and envelope, even though i don't sew! My mother sewed matching cloths for her triplets(i'm #1) years ago, back when it was more economical to sew rather than buy cloths.... these are lovely! Thanks for the video, its alot of work i'm sure!
Hi Tracie! You are quite right about three things in a composition being pleasing. My otherwise useless commercial art education did teach me a FEW interestingly useful tidbits of info, art-wise. Turns out that groups of uneven numbers are always more pleasing to the eye than groups of even numbers. WHO KNEW??!!!! Have a great week, my dear!!!! Oh, just glanced up at the date of uploading......geepers, I am late to the ball, aren't I??? lol...... ;-)
This is lovely. I made a journal from a pattern with Indian costumes.... just wish I had taken photo's before I gave it away, or can remember what I did with it!
it's like youtube knows what i am thinking! lol, i have loads of old patterns and was thinking about making a junk journal with them..this is a great jumping off point! thank you!
I really like those tags. I went to an antique mall this past weekend and I found some patterns but they wanted $3.50 for each, I said NO WAY. Glad you are able to get your patterns pretty inexpensive. Enjoy watching your videos, thanks for sharing. :)
This video is old but I watched it because I used alot of old patterns and especially the tissue pattern it was very fun to do my cover was colorful spools of thread thanks so much I'm going to make another one soon
Looks great! Started using patterns several months ago. I have my own stash of vintage sewing things from my mother who sewed constantly in the 50’s through the 70’s. She saved everything plus her mother’s. Be fun to see your completed journals! Great video!
Hi huni, I will not be doing a flip through. It is a gift but wanted to share this little snippet. Maybe there will be a little show at the other end. xxx
Thank you so much Tracie, I really really love ❤️ this, and did when I first watched this. Great 👍 idea and as you say there’s no waste whatsoever. I have a crafting dedicated craft shop near me, and I really really love ❤️ it. I’ve brought lots of thing’s from there. And I convince myself that I really really need it all. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Tracie this is great for me thanks. I am making a journal for my cousin who makes beautiful quilts but there isn't a lot out there with quilt themes so I have to add "sewing" in general and your video is giving me some great ideas. Thank you so much for sharing.
Valerie Mann Valerie I have seen some really cool paper quilt ideas. Search cathedral window card on UA-cam. There’s some real neat ideas that would be awesome for a quilting journal 😊
valerie - You Ishtar look in thrift stores for old quilting magazines! I have seen them in my local - not big national stores though. Those of us who have them (and patterns) tend to hold on to them forever. Some day, a whole hoard will be at my local thrift store!
Thank you so (sew) much Tracie. I have been planning a sewing journal and collecting elements for a little while now. You have got me jumping out of my skin and anxious to start after seeing your ideas. Hugs xx
Sweet! I use patterns too and sometimes rumple and wrinkle them before gluing and then distress the wrinkles with ink after. I love the cloth on your table! I thought you might have stamped it, but heard you say it's oil cloth! Beautiful for an art table.
Hi Tracie, so glad to watch your video this morning. I have a file started to make a sewing journal someday for myself. This gave me a lot of ideas. Love every single one of your videos and your Etsy shop!!!!
I will be using some of my old patterns and envelopes to decorate tags etc. the way you have. I have some really old patterns from the 1940's that I want to use the pattern envelope as a useable envelope in my Junk Journal. I will need to reinforce them completely because they are so brittle. Thanks for the video! ♥️
Fantastic creative ideas from a very practical item! These turned out so lovely! Very, very clever, Tracie! Thank you for sharing! Will definitely give it a try! ❤
New subbie here. I have a bunch of old patterns that I've used to sew the intended item. And I've hung on to them which was silly because of course you are probably not going to make the same thing again! I love everything you made on this video. And now I feel vindicated for saving those patterns!! 😂. Thank you for the inspiration.
So fun Tracie! I love using sewing patterns for ephemera. I have a few videos using the instructions to make flip pocket or booklet type things. TFS💕😺 Amy
Tracie! Looks awesome lady. I bet I can find patterns at my moms. How adorable would little kid illustrations be from that? Just a thought. Loved how they looked when sewn! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you ever so much for sharing this. My cousin gave me material with sewing machines etc on it. I wondered how I was going to use it.....now I know. I'm going to make a journal and use your idea with the material and I'm off to the new to used shop for patterns. Such an awesome idea.
Making my first ever journal, with a FB group, had already decided mine would b a sewing journal. Perfect timing and wonderful ideas and tutorial. Thank u, sew much
I quilt and sew as well as recently started making journals, I have been wanting to make a quilting/sewing journal and this will fit perfectly into that avenue...thanks so much for your time and sharing!
Thanks for sharing these ideas...I have purchased digitals...old patterns... old sewing essentials.... everything I need to make a sewing journal... this video has planted some new ideas in my head...❤️❤️❤️
I love the address on your table cover..529&1/2!! Makes me wonder how they got addresses back in the day. Half a dwelling? 🤣🤣 Oh and in the USA patterns back in the 60’s and 70’s came in the yellowish brown color. Some could be aging but most is just how they came. My Mom used to make our dresses and Barbie doll outfits. Don’t know how she worked on such tiny Barbie outfit but she did😘😘😘
Watched half of your video...went to thrift store and got a pattern..watched rest of video...now to make something. Thank you for what you do
I love all these ideas for using up patterns I’ve accumulated. TFS Tracey . 💜🙏

Oh wow! We can pick them up from about 50pence. x
Luv these. These patterns are from dresses I made in high school 1966.
