They’re not lumberjacks. It’s a different type of speed climbing with different style spikes where the gaffs are more towards the front. They also climb on a much larger in diameter pole. All of this makes it easier to to faster. Lumberjacks fell trees. Tree climbers spike (with the same style spikes as in the video) and climb trees.
They didn't in my day either until they had a guy cut out near the top of a 45 ft. pole and fell to the ground. Luckily they put a thick layer of sawdust around the poles in the climbing circle to help cushion his fall. He still ended up with a bad concussion, a bunch of broken ribs, some herniated disks, and a broken wrist where he tried to cushion his fall. He had months of rehab and ended up having to take another job in the company. After that they started making people hitch hike as we called using your safety strap up the pole. You could still do it out in the field after that but you better not get caught.
@@ghulsey45, I was a “peer trainer” for a short time at our climbing school. I am in telecom and we train up to 18-24 ft. The company uses a harnessed fall system. I’ve seen guys dangle like a puppet before. Worst thing I did see was a guy that put a hook into his foot. He missed important stuff and was invited back. He didn’t make it last 12 feet. We taught the climb with three point contact and maneuver with strap on.
I didn’t have the safety strap either when I learned in the military. We was just always taught if you fall don’t try to hug or grab the pole. We were to push away from the pole. Can’t say I ever remember anyone falling. All about trusting your equipment.
Boy you'd fall like a rock with a squeeze that loose 😂
Pretty much a new version of free climbing
No you wouldn't it'll catch just take a couple extra feet.
Fr what happened to 3 and 9 😂
Yup boy would never keep a job climbing like that, osha would have their asses

Remember those younger days. Nowadays you couldn't time me with a stopwatch. You would need a calendar.

Long ago in my pole climbing school, we didn’t use the safety strap. It was faster. I never learned with the new strap.
