Since they're using polymer clay, they're not making layers but an emulsion. But if they were to slice it with a "tissue blade" - a long scalpel-thin razor blade made for slicing polymer clay - they would be able to see, with the magnification, the layers of pigment particles lining up within the clear polycyanoacrylate!
Wow! you can still see the layers! YEah, I remember asking myself when do the layers merge together. I never got to a million layers though. Huh. ya know... Damascus and Mokume-gane usually only uses two types of metals at a time. I wonder if you simplified your palette if the layers would look less ....brown. Anyway, very fun.
One of my absolute favorite things about your videos is how you both treat the camera as if it were an actual person in the room with you - that makes the viewer's experience more personal and immersive. We (I, at least) really feel included and present. Thanks for all you do!
This makes so much more sense to me now when people talk about swords folded over a million times by hand. Now you need to take what's left and make the strongest clay Katana the world has ever known! Muramasa would be... well, mildly amused, I guess.
I mean, im still impressed, squishing it togheter 8 times by hand (And hammer), making shure the temperature stays even enough for the sword to not be brittle etc. Yeah Im still impressed
I suspect the reason for it being "less linear" as Katelyn states is because the layers were in so many different sizes before being squished. Perhaps stacking, then cutting INSIDE the edges ( like using a cookie cutter in dough) would have made a big difference. Possibly even keeping the colors from merging so soon!? I love watching the cool things y'all do!!
Ideally you would have squish each individual layer to thickness and shape independently and then stack the even layers and squish them together. That would minimise the warping at the edges, and significantly reduce the blending situation that’s caused by the knife
"There is an amount that's too much." I learned this after many failed baking attempts. Over mixing makes things that are supposed to be crumbly/flakey sad.
The really brown one makes me think of some types of Boulder opal! You guys can give sanding it up to a high grit and buffing it may make it more appealing. I like making faux gemstones with polymer clay a lot so I tend to sand a buff my creations a lot.
The million layer bowl actually looks great! It’s not a psychedelic rainbow but it looks more like “clay” with cool colorful inclusions! Like a piece of wood with colorful resin in the cracks! I think if you intentionally go for a brown bowl with colorful secret layers in it, it would look extra fancy and awesome!
"That's a ton of force!" OMG if I had anything in my mouth it would've projectiled out very fast, I totally lost it at this comment (and Katelyn's smirk augmented that even more)

The browning is basically the exact reason why they layered and folded the steel back then: Mixing it into uniform material with the same carbon content everywhere. They didn't have the same tools and measuring devices to make steel with the perfect carbon content, so they just took high and low carbon steel and mixed it pretty good to get steel that holds an edge well without beeing too brittle.
OMG, I love watching the two of you together doing these videos. You're one lucky man there Evan, as you can see the adoration in Kat's eyes whenever she looks at you... well most times. ;)

I thought it was a neat experiment! And I'm not gonna lie, I thought it'd be 100% brown, no stripes left. The only way I can see there being better stripes is if the clay is a bit drier, or there's a bit of a barrier between the layers. Also I love Science Adjacent With Evan And Katelyn. Love it.

If the bowl got a good bake and cure, you can wet sand it to remove the smear from the knife. It may reveal better layers under the microscope.
Ah cool!
