• Autosomal Recessive (M/C) / Autosomal Dominant / X-Linked (worst prognosis)
• Risk Factor → Consanguineous marriages
CLINICAL FEATURES
• Nyctalopia
• Ring Scotoma present
• Progress to tubular vision (constriction of visual fields)

Retinitis Pigmentosa- On Examination:@2:44
TRIAD
• Pale waxy disc
• Anterior attenuation
• BONE SPICULE PIGMENTATION (Characteristics)
Gold standard for Disease → ERG
• Measures the potential difference of Neuro Sensory layer
• In Retinitis Pigmentosa → ERG becomes FLAT
Normal ERG:@4:16
 Negative ‘a’ wave
 Positive ‘b’ wave
 Small ‘c’ wave
 a-wave → measures the potential difference of photoreceptors (Rods/Cones)
 b-wave → measures the potential diff. of Muller’s cells (neuroglia) & bipolar cells (neuronal cells)
Retinitis Pigmentosa -Treatment:@5:16
• 15000 IU/day of Vit A in Palmitate form every day
 Not toxic
 Can’t be given during pregnancy
 Doesn’t cure RP
 Usually becomes blind by 40 yrs but 7 yrs of vision can be retained by Vitamin A
