Saul Williams!?! Holy shit! I’ve been a fan of his work for years and years. So cool that he’s here.
I got to say that Saul has a fantastic voice. If his current trade doesnt work he could easily go into narration or other voice work. Im glad that you at criterion give different people in the entertainment industry a chance to drool in the closet.
Well, he is a poet and rapper so he’s ahead of the game.
He’s the voice of Jean Michel Basquiat in Downtown 81!
I thought the same thing too. So ASMR inducing!
It's a real gift, everything sounds good in his voice
You are aware he is a musician right?
This was wonderful! their enthusiasm is contagious.
I didn't know Saul Williams or his work at all until I happened to watch Alain Gomis' wonderful 2012 film AUJOURD'HUI last week, where he plays a man who wakes up one day knowing he's going to die (for reasons neither we nor anybody else seems to know), and has to figure out how to spend his last 24 hours. It's a terrific understated performance and as he's in basically every scene, wouldn't have worked without the right actor and personality. Now he and his wife have a movie they've made - and you can't get much more exciting to me than combining music & science fiction - and they're here in the Criterion Closet. How cool is that? Synchronicity. Great bunch of films they picked, also - a more diverse group in point of origin and type would be hard to come up with, shows their tastes are wide and deep.
All exemplary films and their taste is incredible. The rare Closet upload where the guest/s say WHY each movie matters.
His story about coming home and hearing Fight the Power is fantastic
Thank you for the outstanding recommendations. So excited to see “The Mirror” based exclusively on your intricate description of it. I know a fellow film lover when I see one. So excited.
Moved to tears, why because art. My fav Poet artist Saul Williams 👑❤️ I need sleep 😭🤣
Best thing to wake up to! I can see my copy of “Said the Shotgun to the Head” over on a shelf from where I’m standing in my kitchen. I giggled at her mentioning the boom mic in Tarkovskys long shot too XD
yes, someone picks Touki Bouki! what a gem. Oh, and, Neptune Frost is dope
Caught Neptune Frost in theaters this summer. Really interesting and enjoyable theater experience!
Love seeing passionate people bringing the love for other great works.
Great timing, guys 😁 Just saw _Neptune Frost_ on The Channel the other night... it was thrilling - my mind is still coming back down to earth!
Been a big fan of Saul's since _Slam_ came out in '98. Recently read his immaculate book of poetry, _The Dead Emcee Scrolls,_ and was very touched by it. I still revisit his performance at Def Poetry Jam. A _great_ all around artist...
Glad he collaborated with Anisia on this amazing film; now I can dig into her work. And I'm finally gonna dig into Pasolini, too. Italian cinema is so wondrous and beautiful, but I never got around to his work. Thanks for the rec, as always!
Oh you guys are SPOILING us!
I love this, their thoughts on Do the Right Thing and Mirror are awesome. but I'm always shocked when people who come to the closet pick up DVDs! what about bluray guys?
Yes, I was thinking the same.
maybe is a 2000s nostalgia for DVDs, just like before people picked VHS for the aesthetic bc (and let's be honest) VHS quality is bad. and the releases were more censored compared to later DVD and Bluray releases
Cool to see Saul WIlliams take the time to come down from rollerblading on the rings of Saturn just to show us some Criterion Movies he likes!
I was such a fan of Saul’s music back in the days
I’ve been excited to watch Neptune Frost for months and it’s high on my watchlist, but since Videodrome was their first pick in a slew of incredible choices I’m going to watch it this morning!
I just bought Neptune Frost from Kino Lorber!
ive seen all of these vids, and this is one of the absolute best
I love The Mirror and all of Tarkovsky's films!!
Beautiful. These two folks are LEGIT.
Really charming pair with excellent choices.
Loved that, super excited when i saw this video pop into my feed.
Cate blanchett pleaseee
Videodrome is a messed-up film. I have Do the Right think on the Criterion DVD. It's a great film, but so are most of Lee's films: She's Gotta Have it, Malcolm X, Inside Man, Blakkklansman, etc. I have yet to see Tartakovsky's Mirror.
I really really love your World !!!
Seeing someone mention the trilogy of life over salo is underrated
Thank you.
awesome picks by you and your lovely wife!
yes tarkovsky "the mirror" is a masterpiece 🥰😍😇
Such lovely energy
Good episode.
Such beautiful people.
These 2 should make an ASMR channel.
Anisia & Saul 🫀📿
LOL @ Videodrome reference
where are the closet videos of cate blanchette and vicky krieps??
Can we get Slam in thr collection please? That would be an automatic preorder and buy for me… a highly important film in my opinion
Touki Bouki is an awesome movie ! Glad to see some love to Djibril Diop Mambety.
Excellent! 🤗💯
Are we ever getting the John Darnielle video? 😢
Fun one! Thanks. 😊
Hadnt heard of these two before but loved this video. Such passion for film.
Will check out Neptune Frost.
Check out slam too
I remember her from "Nid de guêpes"!
They need to update to Blu-ray.
It's quite amazing how few great 'black films' have been made. And how white an art cinema is. Consider the enormous footprint black Americans (and Africans) have had on American popular music and sports, and compare that to the drought of quality black American cinema.
Should've picked videodrome
There is a step stool in the closet? Time to empty those top shelves!
Great fucking picks bro
Touki Bouki. Movement and memory.
Pasolini was assistant director with Fellini. Yet no Fellini ?
Would love to see Luca Guadagnino in the closet!!!
Icons
