When I'm stretching new strings, I normally do it at the 5th fret, then the 12th fret, then tune again. Repeat until it stays, but you still need to play it a bit to stabilise the tuning.

There is NO WAY I would do that to a guitar. In addition, I NEVER buy relic guitars, as I think they're ugly. But that's why there are different guitars for different players.
