I feel like Amy is the key to all of this. When she first appeared, she was 8. But when we hit Adventure, she is 12. So 4 years passed in-between Sonic 1, 2, 3/Knuckles, Mania, and Superstars. So classic Sonic was 11 during those games
So true
Definitely. Makes sense. Tails had to be 4 just like his AOSTH. I think Generations happens after Sonic 2. Then Sonic 3 came after that, because Sonic doesn’t recognize Knuckles.
So a timeskip?
It is literally impossible for generations to happen after 2 because sonic 2 and 3 literally right after each with no time for generations plus sonic is literally in his super form in beginning of sonic 3
@@sonicathewerehog1915 Well, either way. I’m just saying it COULD take place after 2, because even though 3 is directly after 2, there’s no way Eggman could have fell on Angel Island from the Death Egg and have enough time to convince Knuckles that Sonic and Tails were going to steal the Master Emerald. The manual said 3 took place some days after 2. But it is more likely for Generations to take place between 3&K and Sonic 4.
We knew the answer, we've known the answer since the 90s. Adventure had a CD flashback and a S2-inspired dream sequence, Pocket Adventure literally shows Eggman and Sonic change from their Classic to Modern designs on-screen, Prime has both a S2 and a S3&K flashback, the Chaotix are literally established Classic characters that made the transition to Modern alongside the main 4, Generations' Modern City Escape features the Hooligans (Bark, Bean and Fang) as well as Ray and Mighty, TailsTube makes it clear Tails' theory in Forces of Classic Sonic being from a different dimension is false and it was all actually time travel, IDW references Classic all the time and so did Frontiers, and about Frontiers specifically let's not forget Cyber Space is Sonic's memories and literally half of it is Classic Era stuff.
This was only a debate because some people are simply delusional and/or in denial. They were ALWAYS the same character. Same goes for a bunch of debates on the internet regarding Sonic, most have a definitive *factual* answer. Yes, the characters do age, time flows in Sonic's world. Sonic's planet is called Earth, it's not just "Sonic's world", it's literally been called Earth a bunch of times. Yes, 06 is canon, and so are most spin-offs. Yes, IDW is canon and so are Sonic Channel content, short films, web shows, Prime and like 90% of the franchise's spin-offs like I already said. No, time travel plots don't split the timeline, CD, 06, Rivals, Rivals 2, Mania, Generations, Forces, none of them do, that's absurd.
The Sonic fanbase is always so pressed fighting over their own individual opinions and playing the victim card when those opinions are not validated or considered but are missing the objective reality of the situation in pretty much every occasion.
This
i'd agree, but it's also sonic team's fault - this only became a debate after forces specifically referred to classic as the 'sonic from another dimension' - the tailstube thing only came out 6 years after forces released
they also tried getting rid of all humans in that game lmao
I agree but disagree, Forces put in up in the air on whether or not they were the same
But they clearly are now
The people who wrote Forces had no f--- clue what they’re were talking about god
@@rando6677 I hardly think a retcon from a single game that to my knowledge doesn't even exist in most translations outweighs a dozen other examples proving the retcon false. And even still, while I get what y'all mean, Tails (and at his lowest too) saying some theory on the spot doesn't make it true. Yeah indeed, he said different dimension in Forces, he however had no basis nor receipts for his assumption other than being present during the events of Generations. At least you can buy the TailsTube episode more, it's post-Frontiers Tails (aka a well characterized one) theorizing Classic Sonic ain't a different one but simply a past version of his friend, at least you can believe more research and testing was done off screen before the episode, it doesn't ruin your suspension of disbelief. Not excusing Forces' dumbassery with that specific line, just saying that to me it always was and forever will be meaningless, it was just Tails theorizing about something he doesn't grasp well and being wrong. Not because the writers did it intentionally, they were just dumb clearly, but regardless Tails was just wrong at that moment for me, I can accept that super easily.
@@KOTSOSMC2002 i agree with your examples and maybe it's easy to accept for you - but even just one wrong line said by tails is enough for sonic youtubers to run with it and go crazy lol, the writers should've known better
sonic team is definitely at fault here
To quote somebody on the internet, redesigns aren’t canon, as far as the characters know, they’ve always looked like this, and making a previous design canon and younger, while it’s not a bad idea it, it causes a divide amongst the fanbase, which it did, cuz before generations, most people saw classic sonic and modern sonic as just sonic. Whether you think the split between classic and modern should’ve happened or not, they were absolutely meant to be the same.
Nice vid bro, always figuring out a way to keep us entertained ❤
The split makes perfect sense and imo it's a very smart AND cool story element. It could even connect Sonic Boom to the main canon, and explain how Metal Sonic returns again from Little Planet in Sonic 4. If they wanted to retcon it, they could just make a game or comic or whatever where the timeline becomes one again.
This miner seems to know his sonic facts
My favorite little miner talking about age warms my heart
I’m a big fan of these long form sonic videos, you should make more!
My headcanon is that Classic Sonic became Mania Sonic after events of Generations, thus splitting the timelines. All that time travelling must've had an effect on him
Mania+ was recently confirmed to be canon in a tails tube video
Here’s what I think. Sonic is 13 for the classic games, 14 for adventure to advance. 15 for heroes to colors. 16 from generations to forces and 17 now because of murder of sonic
11 for classic maybe because tails was 4 and now he’s probably 8 inside colors tails is probably 10 or 11 now
nice vid btw, I subbed and notification (the mic is epic)
Love the video! Keep up the good work!😁
1 year older???? Classic sonic looks like he’s 13 and modern sonic looks like he’s 20 lmao 💀💀
Classic is like 11
That's the inconsistency, sega hasn't updated the character's ages in decades, like it wouldn't hurt for them just to say that he's a few years older or something.
this is a certified confirmed timeline 👌👍🙂
Also mighty and ray are also the characters sonic knew in the classic era
Love your vids bro
Juicy James is glad for another long form video again
He's simply the same as Ash Ketchum, Period.
OG Ash is 10. Current Ash is 10. Same thing as Classic Sonic 16. Modern Sonic 16.
Dude your music videos are lit
It's so weird that they don't address these things, when Ian flynn was asked about it in a podcast he just sounds like he's sweeping it under the rug cause he knows it would cause a lot controversy. When it comes to the sonic canon I just go by what makes the most sense, like you'd think modern sonic would know about the events of sonic forces before it even happens since he experienced it as classic sonic, or recognize the future friends that he meets and sees from generations and forces 🤷♂. That's why the whole thing being a split timeline just makes the most sense, but sega is just gonna have to live with that plot hole I guess.
They literally have addressed it tho, multiple times. TailsTube (canon web show) definitely says they're all one timeline.
@@KOTSOSMC2002 you missed my point
@@Elite-vo5hy I didn't, I don't agree with it
@@KOTSOSMC2002 what???

Gotta be classic
Sonic so fast that rules don't work on him😅😂😂
I never thought of it like past and present, I always saw it as a design choice. Personally I love the classic look the characters had.
This is my favorite minor Sonic fan
My only problem with what Ian said is that he acts like the timeline split was a fan idea. When Sonic Forces clearly lays out that Classic Sonic is from another dimension, idk why SEGA thought it would make sense to change this.
You seem to forget that it also didn't make sense when they said Classic Sonic was from another dimension.
@@nyantails How does that not make sense with a timeline split?
@@axiom6000because sonic generations said it first that classic sonic was from the past, sonic forces is the one that changed it. keep in mind sonic forces is also the game that got rid of south island for no reason and also got rid of the humans for no reason, what were the writers thinking?
@@YplanAnimator Yes, and AFTER Generations is the timeline split. Nobody, not a single person has ever said Classic Sonic in Generations is a Sonic from a different dimension. And Forces did not get rid of anything, all of those things still exist.
@@axiom6000 let me te you something, sonic forces did indeed try to get rid of these things, since green hill is now all over the planet (it used to be only on south island) and you don't see a single human except for eggman, you'd think GUN would show up in this situation. and another thing, the dimension thing was a mistranslation, in the original Japanese script that was written first there's no classic sonic from another dimension
"Everything is cannon" is so real 😂
I love your vids your the best🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪
Now, i respect everyone's opinion here, but i think that classic sonic and modern sonic are different. I just came here to see the other side of the conversation. I THINK that classic and modern got split in generations, and well, time travel changes the timeline. So i think from sonic 1 up to sonic 3&k there was only one sonic. Then generations happened and the timeline got split. The original sonic was modern sonic and continued to adventure 1, while classic sonic went on to mania.
But I might be wrong
A fellow Pinoy kumusta!
iizuka confirmed its just one character and that mania and superstars happen after s3k but before sa1
Nice video
Something you forgot was that least two years would have to pass between the classic era and adventure because Little Planet only appears once a day in a year and it was in both Mania and 4 before Adventure happened in canon (It was also in Plus but that was both days after Mania so Little Planet would have to be gone by then so I believe it’s not real in Plus because of the phantom ruby)
*at least
I’ve always just assumed that in generations when sonic was celebrating his birthday that it was his… 20th birthday. Cuz it was the 20th anniversary. I mean obviously I could be wrong, but even recently all the characters have had their official ages removed, so they have no definitive age anymore
And considering the voices in Frontiers I think it’s fair to assume Sonic is at least 20 nowadays imo
I always felt like classic sonic was just a younger version. Sure there are wikis and books that said otherwise, but I don't think those are official.
Santiago Origins is clearly a retcon of the "classic" timeline, because in these games:
• he can perform the Dropdash;
• he doesn't have a voice like in the previous releases of Sonic CD.
but sonic 1, 2 and 3 didn't have the latter either, and I think the drop dash thing isn't actually canon and just a gameplay mechanic. it only becomes canon in sonic mania and after, most likely because he learns how to do it. I think I remember it being in the Sonic 2 manual that sonic learned the spindash because tails teaches him how to do so

My interpretation of the (mainline) Sonic timeline:
Sonic 1 - Sonic's age: 11
Sonic CD - same age
Sonic 2 - same age
Sonic 3 & Knuckles - same age
(Classic Sonic travels through time into Generations, then goes back to his time)
Sonic Mania - same age
(Classic Sonic travels through time (again) into Forces and then back)
Sonic Superstars - same age(?) (I haven't played it yet so idk much about it)
(Timeskip into the Modern era)
Sonic Adventure - Age: 15
Adventure 2 - same age
Heroes - (ill just put nothing if its the same for now on)
'06 -
(Sonic '06's existence in the timeline is arraticated)
Unleashed -
Colors -
Generations - Age: 16
(I must admit i find it hard to believe that everything between Adventure and Colors takes place over 1 year of sonic's life)
Forces -
Frontiers -
Sega and sonic team should really up their game on fleshing out and clearing up lore and timeline shenanigans, like for example, why the hell dont ray, mighty, bark, bean, fang, ect. show up in modern sonic? where did they go?
Def agree with this one.
bark and bean were in posters in sonic generations and were illusions in sonic mania. fang appeared in sonic superstars and also was an illusion in sonic mania. mighty and ray were mentioned in tailstube
@@YplanAnimator to be clear i mean why they don't *appear* in *modern* sonic. so anything during mania or superstars dont count sense those are classic games. Also appearing in wanted posters doesn't count as appearing. BUT i haven't seen any tailstube videos so idk if that's where they explain where they go after the time skip
Nice
Glad someone said it.
Now that we finally understand the timeline split address can you please make a video on the timeline on its own(sonic 1-frontiers)if you don’t want to do it it’s understandable because it’s for masochists
I believe that there is a time-split it makes more sense than on timeline. (Sonic Generations)
for the people who might not have understood what ty said by "timeline split" it's like if modern sonic in his past ate a chili dog but classic sonic didn't basically.
It's just avengers endgame time travel logic
yep@@Elite-vo5hy
It's not that we "believe" that the timeline split after Generations. That's outright the case and I have no idea why Ian said what he said.
The Sonic cosmology is based on the Multiverse theory, which states that different timelines exist in their own universes. This was already established way back in the manual for Sonic CD, and we even see it in 06 where Crisis City remains in Silver's future even though Sonic saved Elise.
The reason the future was unchanged is because Solaris was still there it’s only after the candle was blown out in the past that everything changed sonic saving Elise from crashing didn’t change anything because Solaris was still active in the present and would still affect the future they changed the future when Elise blew out the candle in the past
I think classic doesn't remember those things since after generations he went back to a different timeline and the timeline in which modern grew remained unchanged. That's an easy explanation that works with what SEGA's given us.
He still know modern sonic and tail tho in forces so no he doesn’t forget the events it doesn’t create a timeline split classic just goes back to the past and he grows up to be modern sonic
@@mandalorianjedi232 yeah, that doesn't change anything. If the classic sonic from generations (that remembered everything) went to forces then modern sonic still had a childhood, in which the classics happened.
I love how you're talking into a shadow plushie.
I know that there are many people who don't see how the two are one and the same and don't have a split in the timeline, so I'll try to explain here why this doesn't happen:
Time travel in Sonic doesn't work like we normally see in movies and series, in Sonic, when there were the events of Generations and Classic Sonic returned to his era, time began to repair itself, making the classic characters slowly forget over time that they knew them from the future.
"But in Sonic Forces Classic Sonic remembers Modern Sonic and Tails"
Yes, but that's because between Generations and Forces for Classic Sonic there wasn't that much time difference, so he could still remember the events.
This idea of time repairing itself comes both from Archie Comics (in the Genesis of a Hero saga) and from Ian Flynn who has already mentioned it in his podcast in a simpler and quicker way.
WE MAKING IT OUT WITH CHILIDOGS WITH THIS ONE🔥🔊🔥🔊🔥

Wait, classic sonic already ran through his future in generations, so that means he knows what's gonna happen, like sa1 and sa2.
I mean in sonic prime they showed the same story of the classic era but everyone looked modern maybe there just trying to remake the design
Sonic surprisingly doesn’t actually age he’s ,been 15 forever
I don’t think the 16 bit stuff is meant to be taken literally cause this series already has like 30 different art styles so it’s pretty much impossible to tell which one is the real one, maybe the marza 3D stuff like sonic colors’ intro cause it’s been shown a lot of times and is the most realistic?
The part with Sonic being 15 is not from Sonic Adventure DX. It’s from Sonic Heroes. Also, it’s important to differentiate between the Japanese and US manuals.
Good video, now to see that video about all Mario’s are the same
5:48 i was just watching that minutes ago 😂
Ian Flynn doesn't write the story for the games. He doesn't have a say or authority, he just writes the dialog.
But some story aspects are added by Ian, like the ancients looking like Chaos.
lack of research and knowledge about the current state of the franchise literally stinks right now

It's confusing imo, but nice explanation vid.
This lines up with one of your newer videos where some of the translations say that one of Sonics abilities is being able to time travel just by running fast enough , speaking of running fast enough do you think he would also be able to stop time? Even if it was temporarily???
Hi
Yes
W
Considering sonic cd this makes sense
DANG
This minor is thinking big about sonic!
3:26 sonic robo blast was actually from the sonic team? :0???
I’m just wondering how Sonic 4 fits into the timeline with Metal Sonic being brought back from Little Planet. Sonic 4 Episode Metal shows Eggman waiting for Little Planet’s return after Sonic 4 Episode 1, while Eggman brings back Little Planet on his own with the Phantom Ruby in Mania. Really confusing if you think about it.
sega: hyper sonic isn't cannon
sega after getting asked questions: everything is cannon
hyper sonic fans: I KNEWWW IT!!!
I thought I was early miner
Don’t think so hard guys sonic lore isn’t that good anyway so it’s not worth the headache even SEGA doesn’t care to fix their lore just enjoy the games and their story don’t think too much about it

Hey Tyrecords, can you make a video on how strong is Newbie from Pixel Gun 3D
I HAVE THE SAME SHADOW PLUSH
The main problem with the idea of a split timeline is that it just doesn't make any sense.
If we're going by the idea that Classic Sonic grew up into Modern Sonic, then if Classic Sonic is now going down a different path in time, then he'd still grow up into Modern Sonic in that timeline too.
Yet I don't think that's what a lot of these advocates of the split timeline want. They just want Classic Sonic to carry on forever, and have the events in his life completely ignore the games of the Modern era because... I don't know, they can't stand Modern Sonic's "yucky green eyes" or something!
This whole split just seems to be coming from a very petty place. "I don't like that stinky modern Sonic! Get rid of him! Where's MY Sonic? Give me MY Sonic! REEEEEEE!" Sega, seriously! Don't feel like you have any obligation to appease this bunch! If you want to make a Sonic game with the traditional 2D momentum based gameplay, but feature the characters in their Modern designs, and incorporate popular characters like Shadow, Rouge, Cream, Blaze or Silver, then you should totally be free to do so. Don't let these overly negative whiners, who refuse to leave their 90's cave, ultimately dictate what can and can't be in a Sonic game.

Now here’s the thing in sonic x they especially said it in the show is that time go slower inside the world so it makes sense why sonic is 16 in 1997 because the time go slower and when the time will the next year comes they will be the next age

hey ty i wanna know why you dont make any videos on any fanmade characters made by sonic fans like sonic.exe mecha sonic from smbz or even nazo and seelkadoom please make a video on these characters to do some of the sonic fans justice
My theory is 1 timeline Classic went Hyper, the he didn’t, I think it makes sense
So why did sonic get so tall in 1 year?
Grow spert
How did he magically gain the ability to speech?
……..
Big fan reply plzzz
Damn
Wait, doesn't this mean Sonic's timeline works linearly? Where no matter what they do, events stay the same and connected?
Even though Mighty and Ray are only allowed in the Classic games
Sonic has no canon, there is only head-canon.
What wiki are you referencing bro?
5:50 I do have my own beliefs on how old classic sonic really is now. Sonic is 15 and tails is eight. What am I getting from this? Well, we can see that sonic is seven years older than tails so in my belief, I do think that classic sonic is an age between 7-8 but I could be wrong
How about sonic versus Kirby
Another thing that supports the “theory” is that in sonic generations at the end of the game modern sonic says “your gonna have a great future pal!” And other stuff implying that they’re the same. Here’s the link to the cutscene. ua-cam.com/video/d91NaluZtio/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
