So the reason how they got to have King Kong's license is that the License for the character is WEIRD as all hell and is owned differently for movies, books, and other media. What the devs bought is actually the license to a 2005 book called "Kong: King Of Skull Island" rather than any of the more well known Monsterverse or Universeal studio movies.

Fun fact - the executable uses the default Unreal icon, and the game process is called "Monke".
Too bad there's no chance of a sequel, otherwise they'd be able to call the process "Return to Monke".
Another fun fact - the deluxe edition comes with a few film grain and other tacky looking post processing effects (you know - the stuff you can add for free through Nvidia Game Filter feature) and alternate King Kong color schemes (which look as bad as the default one, arguably even worse). This is even worse than the Gollum deluxe package.
I wonder how much of the game is stock Unreal store assets. I assume it could be most of the stuff. Also, what's up with the weird not-quite-Borderlands pseudo-celshading effect they used? It looks so out of place?

@@rexyjp1237 Still better than the one they marketed with Bryan Cranston only to kill him 10 minutes into the movie and the whole thing was a complete snoozefest. I'd watch the 1998 movie over any of the others. Any day.
Also Toho have the weakest claim out of everyone to the rights of King Kong. They were sold the rights to produce a movie by RKO, who didn't even own King Kong themselves. RKO had previously made two movies with the cooperation from the original character and stories creator (Merian Cooper), and instead of accepting a salary, he wanted to keep the rights to King Kong and the story. Basically, RKO still owned the rights to the MOVIES they had produced, but not the rights to King Kong or the story itself. Despite this, they approached Toho to make movies based on King Kong (the original character, not the previous movies). There was a big legal battle and it was ruled that RKO didn't even own the rights to their own movies and they had fallen into public domain, and the character King Kong itself they ruled was still owned by Cooper (the original creator). So they ruled that RKO and Universal (who released the 1976 movie stateside) would have to pay back Cooper for the money they had made on all the re-releases of the 1933 King Kong movie. They also ruled that Cooper was still the rightful owner of the character and story which was his argument for nearly 40 years. Eventually he died, and his son sold the rights to Universal anyway.
So yeah the King Kong 1933 MOVIE is public domain, but the character is not. Toho has no legal ownership of the property. Only of the movies they made. The same as RKO when they illegally licensed the property to Toho in the first place. The character and story is owned by Universal. You can still make your own King Kong games / movies / books but they have to be based on the public domain movies they can't be other properties or original stories that feature King Kong. How they judge that, I have no idea. But that's where it stands as of now.

  • @Exotac

Figured I'd point this out cause It got mentioned in I think Yong's video too.
The one, and I do mean /ONE/ point you can't directly fault the devs for is Kong's size. The game is supposed to be an origin story. He's small because he's young. He's not "King" Kong yet, he's just Kong. Hense the game's title. And he isn't REALLY the size of a normal gorilla. If you look at the size of the trees and the like that you pass directly by, he's standing probably a good four to five heads above the average person. When you take that into consideration, it would make a lot LESS sense for Kong to be as big as he is when he's "King" and fully adult, when he's just a kid.
    Now: THAT SAID...
One MIGHT immediately begin to question the decision to make a King fucking Kong game, the franchise about the giant monke the size of buildings, where the giant monke the size of buildings is not a giant monke the size of buildings yet. LIke, people aren't buying a Kong game to play slightly chonky gorilla simulator. They want to play as the KING Kong. They want to smash buildings and desolate the military and kidnap helpless women and- wait.

Right off the jump you've got two things wrong. First, this is not and was never a AAA game. Iguanabee is a small studio in Chile that makes budget games. Second, the legal history of King Kong is long and complicated (and Nintendo actually played a massive part in it funnily enough.) While technically there are 5 prominent King Kong franchises, anyone can make a game based on King Kong, because the Meriam C. Cooper novel is in the public domain and has been for a while now. The name "King Kong" can't be trademarked. This game is not based on the Legendary Monsterverse Kong from Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla Vs. Kong. It also isn't based on the Universal owned movies Peter Jackson's King Kong or the 1933 movie King Kong. It's also not based on the Toho productions King Kong that appeared in King Kong vs Godzilla. And it is also not part of the 1976 Dino De Laurentiis King Kong franchise. The game is actually based on the novel and comics series by Joe Devito which has nothing to do with any of the Kong movies listed above It's a semi-obscure novel and comic series that really only hardcore Kong fans know about. Not really defending this game. It's unfinished and too expensive (although it is not AAA priced). But just putting things into perspective because a lot of very wrong information is out there.

Another notable glitch that you didn't mention.
If you run at a wall in a certain manner you can become LOCKED inti whatever frame of aniamtion you are in at the time and softlock the game. It own't take any more controller inputs of anykind.
I saw a streamer acheive this within the first 10 minutes of playing and a secondtime later on before they just made sure to avoid running directly into walls.
ALSO there are red stones that you get a power up in order to destroy. However they forgot to put collision detection of the red stones covering floors to block underground routes. So you can just ... fall through them and end up in late game areas that you can't get out of because you can't go back the way you came and you can't go further because the game expects you to have powers that you don't have.
    Also these aren't glitches but
    1. The map doesn't have a location indicator. So you have to figure out yourself where you are on the map just by knowing where you are.
    2. The game does not feature a proper waypoint system and the closest it offers is a roar that makes lines appear in the sky. However these appear for not just quests but points of interest. So knowing where to go to progress the story is a nightmare unless you've beaten the game once already and just know where shit is.
    3. Despite what I just said it's possible to beat this game within 5 hours on a first playthrough. Less than 2 if you speedrun it after knowing what you're doing.
They are charging $30 ... for a game you can potentially beat in 2 hours. and this isn't like ... a cinematic game. Cut scenes are sparse and it's mostly exploration and combat.

i'm pretty sure they didn't have to purchase the rights to Kong from Universal. They hold the King Kong movie rights, but the charracter of Kong actually appeared first in a novelization of the film, and the rights to the story in that novel were not renewed so the novel is in public domain. This means that elements of the Kong story are in public domain, which is likely why this game takes place long before the events of the movie. They just used public domain elements is my guess.
That jpeg cutscene seems to indicate that the jpeg was probably ap laceholder in their cutscene editor and they never went back and actually added the animation that the placeholder was supposed to represent. This displays a total lack of quality control and testing.

This uses a very specific IP, from devito artworks. The sizing, designs, coloring of creatures are all straight from that source material. Which could be cool if it was the most popular version, but it isn't.. and some of the creature designs, like mammal like spiders and indistinct female characteristics kinda show in this game too. The game is also super tame in terms of violence, and most of the gruelling moves from CS's happen out of camera.

Now the original King Kong book back from 1932 was never copyrighted so its public domain forever, so as long as you follow the book or the basic backbone of the story, you're legally fine.
But apparently, this game is not based on the original book or any of the movies from Universal/RKO, Warner Bros, Toho, or even Disney.
It actually ripped off a prequel novel by Sci-Fi author Joe Devito from back in the 2000s. With AFAIK no credit was given

There's nothing wrong with using free assets... But... well, assets not specifically for the game should be used carefully. If I remember right, Getting Over It was almost entirely using pre-existing assets. The Citadel's music was all pre-existing assets. And most DOOM Wads use tons of pre-existing free assets.
Anyway, I'm currently a solo developer, and don't plan on using pre-existing assets (outside of existing Godot engine features), but it is frequently a good idea to do that. With my game, it's music is the only part I can't make, but my sister can do that. Without her help, I'd need either investors or free assets. And I'm still considering doing some fundraising, as I want to pay her before release, and maybe get some more musicians on board before release.

I expected a lot more on the "used free assets" claim, frankly. It used the grass. Um, OK. Not to defend this game, but if that's the only "free assets" found in the game, I'm amazed. I'd be willing to bet most of the assets are paid assets, and there's nothing fundamentally wrong with that - if you make a good game. Using the grass Unreal Engine provides is fine... if it's shrunk to nothing, that's a matter of scale, right? I think the enemies were meant to be large monsters as well... but the problem with the game is nothing else is really provided for scale. How about a herd of deer? Some tiny wild boars? Small birds flying around like flies? Why not take some liberties and put some tiny humans running around, along with their camps and maybe some vehicles? They decided to go with an "art style" to hide the bad quality of the assets. Hiding bad assets only makes them more obvious. A game franchise using cel-style graphics like Borderlands starts with very good assets. Kong was done poorly at every level, but if you claim "free assets" - please bring the receipts instead of making it a central click-baity point in the title.

i figured out whats so bad about the visual style of this game.
it has next to no texture fidelity, but the "texture-roughness" for the shading of texture-light-reflections is set to maximum.
You usually see when "texture-reflectivity" is set too high like in Morrowind or Fallout3, just because they could, to make it look good, like when bloom could be done in 30fps, every game added ALL the bloom bloom, BUT setting "texture roughness" too high is a new level if lazy dumb bad style.
This game is literally "cheap and rough" at any moment you look at it.

the main thing that really drops this beneath Gollum in terms of Quality is the story. sure, the story for Gollum is pretty bare bones, but there are characters who interact and have their own goals, however middling they may be, and they can fall back on the overarching LotR IP and lore Tolkein pumped out. it's not the best, but it does exist.
this game has no story, outside a bare bones revenge plot. but that's the whole thing, and the only dialogue is a narrator.

The things it most reminds me of are the host of awful movie tie in games shat out anywhere between 1996 and 2010. There were a tonne of games like this, its just that in most cases we've thankfully forgotten them.

The more I look at this game, the more I wonder if this was actually someone's sick joke at the dev studio...a joke that costed a lot of people around $35 dollars (30 Pounds)...Or almost $60 for a special edition that the content is the equivalent of a wet fart.
I would say the only thing worse than buying this game would be investing in an NFT, but I think even that is ever so slightly more worth it than this game. Just slightly.
