There's hardly any cultural continuity in the region for that long. Living culture was always on the move, evolving and intertwining with others by constant exchange with other cultures.

@@denxero The monuments, the customs, but mainly the Greek language showed a solid consciousness of Greekness until 1922.

These are scenes of the 1922 burning of Izmir by the Turks . As the Greek city of Smyrna it had been a site of Greek culture for about 3,000 years, but after the Greeks invaded and sought to conquer western Turkey after WWI and were defeated by the Turks led by Kemal Atatürk, the Turks literally drove the Greeks into the sea at Izmir, forcing them to escape in rowboats to British and French warships in the harbor. In the 1960s I knew Greeks in the U.S. who were still alive to tell me how they had barely escaped with their lives and a few possessions in this manner. After peace was made, there was an exchange of populations: Turks living in Greece migrated to Turkey; Greeks living in Turkey migrated to Greece. But a few stayed behind on both sides, and to this day there are still some Greeks living in Turkey.
