  • Australia's reformist and controversial former Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam, shares his views on 50 years of public life, in an in-depth conversation with Senator John Faulkner.
GOUGH WHITLAM: IN HIS OWN WORDS looks at Whitlam's early parliamentary life, his role in the 1960s and 1970s as Labor's Deputy Leader and Leader, and taking the ALP to power after a record 23 years of Liberal government. The remarkable achievements of his three short years in government and his dramatic sacking are explored. The documentary examines the Whitlam Government's economic credentials and performance, asks questions about Gough Whitlam's role in the Indonesian invasion of East Timor and the competence of his ministers, and his tactics on the day of his Government's dramatic dismissal by Governor General Sir John Kerr on Remembrance Day 1975.

Gough Whitlam's contribution to Australian history and society is truly remarkable, arguably best summarised by Paul Keating: "There was Australia before Gough Whitlam, and there was Australia after Gough Whitlam. They are two different places."
Every Australian owes an eternal 'Thank You' to Gough.

He is so sharp when he is speaking, it is so hard to believe that he was 86 years of age when this was filmed.

There are not enough words to express the immense admiration for this man
As a Conservative, foremost, an Australian and believer in democratic principles, it is unquestionable that what Kerr and Kerr's Kerr did was absolutely wrong. Whitlam was the elected Prime Minister, his Government held the majority seats in the House, which is the people's house.
The media...., well, what can one say about them.
EGW is the greatest PM we have ever had.
And just for my true believers here laughing at a Conservative glorifying the great man, Simon Crean is the 2nd best PM we never had
    RIP Gough and Margaret

It must be said that well into the second half of the 20th century Australia was fairly underdeveloped for a modern country. Say what you want about Whitlam, he was a terrible manger of men, he did begin the proper modernization of the country.

That man did not deserve his dismissal All the cards were stacked against him. The cia,mi6,Americans and Britain wanted him gone so cause it was staring Australia away from them. One day I hope we have a prime minister who has the balls like to stand up to the Americans and say “no America we’re not friends you’re just a bully”

Gough Whitlam was fortunate that the Liberal Party replaced the relatively progressive and charismatic John Gorton with the unimaginative, ineffectual and wooden William McMahon as Prime Minister.
Gorton had defeated Whitlam in 1969, albeit with a reduced majority, and could well have repeated that win in 1972, particularly if Gorton had been allowed to prosecute his more progressive national policies.
Once in office, Whitlam implemented a number of worthy social policies, but his main failing was his disinterest in economic policy.
This ambivalence was later confirmed by many of his cabinet colleagues who attested that Whitlam would literally "glaze over" when any deep economic discussion took place.
Ultimately, domestic economic policy is the most important "game in town" as, without a strong Government budgetary position and a healthy private sector economy, a Government will struggle to sustainably implement its otherwise laudable social programs and infrastructure projects.
Sadly, under Whitlam's stewardship, exacerbated by the actions of a number of dysfunctional cabinet members, Government finances were in disarray and the Australian economy was in tatters.
This doubtlessly was the main causation for Malcolm Fraser's record landslide victory in Devember 1975, a month after Sir John Kerr' historic dismissal of the Whitlam Government.
