  • Adapted from an 18th Century Yorkshire Ballad. This is the tale of the Battle of Flamborough Head, fought between the Royal Navy and the United States Continental Navy in 1779 during the American War of Independence. Featuring "A noble Commander- Paul Jones was his name!" The song is taken from my recent Album 'THE JUVENILE DRAMA' - Jim Jarratt 2019,

    It's a wonderful piece of work, but, dear Sir, what about lyrics? I'm a foreigner and can't understand ALL the words. I think people like me will enjoy it.)

      John Paul Jones. Traditional Ballad.
      Adapted by Jim Jarratt 2019.
      1. An American frigate, The Richard by name,
      Mounted guns forty four and from New York she came,
      To cruise in the channel of old England's fame,
      With a noble commander commander, Paul Jones was the man.
      Derry Down, Down, Down Derry Down!
      2. We had not cruised long, 'fore two sails we espies,
      A large fourtyfour, and a twenty likewise;
      With fifty bright shipping, well loaded with stores,
      And the convoy stood in boys, to Bridlington shore,
      3.In the late afternoon, Pearson came alongside,
      with a loud speaking trumpet, “Whence came you?” he cried;
      “Come answer me quickly, I'll hail you no more,
      Speak or a broadside into you I'll pour.”
      4. Paul Jones then said to his men, every one,
      “Let every true seaman stand firm to his gun!
      We’ll receive a broadside from the bold Englishmen,
      And like true Yankee sailors, return it again.”
      5.We fought them four glasses, four glasses so hot,
      till forty bold seamen lay dead on the spot,
      And fifty five more lay bleeding in gore,
      As the thundering great cannons of Paul Jones did roar.
      6.Then bold Captain Pearson to Paul Jones did say,
      Your ship it takes water from fighting today,
      This battle is hopeless, will you your colours strike?
      Said Jones, Sir I have not begun for to fight!
      7. As Serapis and Richard, for advantage did race,
      They snarled up their yards in a deadly embrace.
      And grappled together, they thundered and bled,
      As the Yorkshire Folk watched from the Old Flamborough Head.
      8.Our gunner, in great fright to Captain Jones came,
      “We gain water fast and our sides in a flame;”
      Paul Jones he gave answer in the height of his pride,
      “If we cannot do better, we'll sink alongside!”
      9.. Our Alliance bore down, and the Richard did rake,
      Which caused the bold hearts of our seamen to ache;
      But our shot flew so hot the Serapis it shook,
      And the bold British Colours in surrender were struck..
      10.Bonhomme Richard she foundered that very next day,
      And lies at the bottom of Bridlington Bay,
      Jones took the Serapis, sailed off into fame,
      With all except England, a praising his name.
      11. So now, my brave boys, have we taken a prize-
      A large fortyfour, and a twenty likewise!
      God bless the poor mother s who have reason to weep,
      For the loss of their sons on the unfathomed deep..
