Undergrounding all utilities in SF is nearly impossible, according to officials: Here's why

  • Undergrounding overhead utilities has a long history in California that dates back to 1967. In fact, the city of San Francisco has put roughly half of its utility lines underground. But today, PG&E says there is no money left to underground the rest of San Francisco, much to the disappointment of homeowners.

I thought the reason PG&E said it needed to raise rates was to make its utility safer by burying the lines underground.

I know a lot of PGE lineman and associates making $200k-$300k total with OT for doing nothing. They should be audit by the State on a quarterly basis to show where the money is spent.

Yeah, my buddy worked inside PG&E as a contractor: The old timers can do their job very quickly .....then they have plenty of time off
With that said, it is pretty hard/expensive to underground

Lineme are doing nothing? According to dept of labor, it’s one of the most dangerous jobs in the US. (More the police and fire combined) So they’re doing nothing while having one of the most dangerous jobs in the country? I’ll be unpacking that all day.

@@User-54631 Do you personally know anyone who works at PG&E?? I guess not... My landlord is working at PG&E as a lineman, and he told me the best shift is working at night with OT because of higher pay and most of the time they're just chilling doing nothing. One of my friends also works at PG&E and most of his time is spent staying at home CHILLING and he only goes out when there is a call to check the gas meter. I even asked them to hook me up with a job in their department, but they said there is a line of closest family or friends to get in first. Before you start to unpacking learn to wait in line first if you're lucky.

I worked on two island at the beach and they were putting the overhead wires underground, you would be amazed on how long it takes, it is incredibly expensive to do. The homeowners are responsible for running the lines on their property.

They definitely need to get all the utilites underground in SF. Maybe then they can have a clear and unobstructed view of how their poor voting choices has led the area into becoming a crime ridden ghost town. Good luck getting more funding as a significant portion of the tax base has had to close their businesses and most likely leave the area!

I think this might be the third time they’ve asked utility customers to pay for under-grounding the lines. Once in the 60’s, again in the 1980’s. That money was always used instead for “other expenses.”
