Two Days of Pacifics

  • Our two days of pacifics began at the footbridge on the Weybridge side of Chertsey station, waiting for 70013 Oliver Cromwell and the Cathedrals Express to Sherborne and Yeovil.
From Chertsey we headed for Grateley. There's not much you can say about Grateley, other than "at least it's not Monxton".
Now that summer is over, traffic on the A303 was light and we reached our next location, just east of Templecombe, with 30 minutes to spare. Unfortunately, the train had been able to skip the pathing stop at Gillingham, and it too arrived 30 minutes early, just as we were walking across a field.
Having spent a couple of hours checking potential locations for future use we took up position on a bridge near Stowell to await the return working, and with that shot successfully completed, it was off to Brookwood for the now familiar water stop scene.
We started off on the down platform at St Margarets, but it soon became clear that the imminent local service to Kingston would be in the way, so we moved to the up platform with moments to spare.
The next day and 60009 Union of South Africa was bound for Weymouth with the Dorset Coast Express. A theoretical nine minutes behind was 60163 Tornado with a Belmond Pullman for Bath and Bristol, just enough time to slip a local service in between. As it happened 60009 was running late and the headway was cut to a mere five minutes, just long enough for us to reposition on the platforms at Syon Lane and at Isleworth, where we had set up. The late running of the service to Waterloo meant that passengers on the up platform at both stations were treated to the sight of two steam specials one behind the other, those that could be bothered to look up from their phones that is.
Following Tornado seemed the better prospect, so we made for Aldermaston and then while 60163 took water at Newbury we tried for Bedwyn, but had to settle for a bridge near Froxfield when we ran out of time.
The evening return from Bristol would be headed by 35028 Clan Line, and for this we went to the bridge at Sunninghill.
From Sunninghill we nipped across to West Byfleet for the return of 60009, and then rounded off the day with another visit to Barnes.

Brilliant video . Great choice for locations. Well worth all the traveling. Some luck on the way with dogging units. Capturing the water stop and was that one for yourself. Really enjoyed watching . Kind regards C&A
