- For over a year Citizen TV has been tracking the plight of Syokimau residents in the face of incessant air pollution emanating from a nearby factory operated by Endmor Steel Millers.
Tonight we bring you the story of the residents' desperate fight and how the regulators have continued to look the other way. #WeCantBreathe #EnockSikolia
Residents need to come together and burn that killer factory down
Way out.
Yea its the only way out
Good journalism, sio kufuata politicians helping them lie to us. Show them where the dirt is.
Gosh.... Funny enough am pretty sure the owners of that company cannot possibly be living anywhere near the company..
This sounds like the story of Tom's River in New Jersey US. The government needs to intervene and Kenyans we need to join in the demand for clean environment. Lives are priceless
Hey you in new Jersey
The ANIMAL IN THE HOUSE IS PLANNING. Who approved this company to build in a residential area? Or why were houses put up in an industrial area. This happens all the time in Kenya. NEMA/KEBS are a big let down. Remember the story about mercury in sugar? poisonous preservatives in meat? Did you hear about these cases again? GONE!!!! Sad that is kenya for you
If this steel factory continues to operate after this report..it will be a shame on all government related agencies mandated to protect Kenyans. A factory cannot be set up within a residential area and afford this kind of recklessness.
They will just operate, the politicians stay in Muthaiga, Karen, and other lavish estates where no factories pollute the environment.
Was this factory closed?
Quick Google search: The owner of the company is the chairman of The African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA) 😳😳😳 one Paul Watoro Gichu.
If a church leader is willing to blatantly ignore people's health, I imagine there's waaaay more unethical practices... Then willing to blatantly lie about the operations?😳😳😳😳
How do people sleep at night! No wonder cancer is so engrained in Kenya. This is saaaaaad! All for the bribes they are paying NeMA and the rest
Not all men of collor and women are genuine some r the DEVIL
Shame on him and God will punish him very soon Money is changing hands.
No wo wonder most of us don't trust those so called Evangelism preacher's/ Pastors to them money comes first Shame on him.. Niakiurage andu biu.......+44
NEEMA peoples are always money wise and politically compromised look at our Rivers it should be disbarded ASAAP .
Good work Citizen tv, always at the point
This is sickening and annoying at the same time. People need to burn those factories.
Wooooiye I feel the pain of a parent very sad indeed
I loved how mentioned their children will never be brought here are likely to reside near the facility, which was true 👌👌👌
city planning department is the problem......for many years syokimau - mlolongo - Sabaki - Athi River along Msa road was an Industrial Zone....... This Estates came recently....who approved residentials close to factories???
Why don't people of Syokimau go on streets? or just gather in the factory? They need to go to court?
People should burn the factory down.
Where is governer Mutua? If you help closedown this killer factory...U deserve the presidency seat... corrupt is not only killing our economy but also it's people...where are the representatives when U need them?
Kenya has so many offices and officers getting salaries for nothing
So sickening.... surely ! What has our society come to??? When did we decide money is more precious than life? Honestly I can’t help think our leadership has been getting worse over the years!
Good story Enock, congrats, I just hope the cry will be heard ,it's Soo shameful that their attempt to report to NEMA has fallen to deaf ears, may God intervene
My heart aches for the parents of that beautiful little girl.
Where is humanity?
Mungu atulinDE, Asante Enock for airing this
Kenyan institutions are dead. Hapa inafaa vigilante justice.
You can try but I doubt whether it can succeed, these people thrive on corruption and using loopholes to make money, they are buying substandard materials and machinery to save on cost of production. Vigilante attacks will lead to police shootings and fatal killings !!
The police chiefs will be bribed and will respond within minutes shooting anybody on sight.
@@samuelmburu4721 Just a suggestion..this is what the corrupt individuals thrive on. The fear and weakness of the oppressed. Look at Nigeria armed resistance around issues of resources and all the havoc it's caused. But one thing you can say is that it has resulted in some development in the previously neglected areas.
@@rickomba it happens as the last solution. In south Africa, the citizen have very powerful means of finishing an industry, they lobby and campaign telling people not to buy anything from that company,it is driven to ground, very many industries cannot withstand more than a year of sabotage of their products. Other competitors get an ample time to take the market share of the industry affected.
Thanks for the wonderful piece of investigative journalism. It scares me. Too much greed in our country. May that steel company labours in vain. It is good to know they are other steel companies in Nairobi and they are not mentioned here.
Is the problem caused by only the steel miller? Or it is a collective action by the factories in that area? My condolences to the man who lost his daughter.
Enock Sikolia is undoubtedly the best investigative journalist we have
Good job sikolia hope the best directive is going to be taken.
The joke here is our legal system. We have laws but there's no justice.
The Judiciary has failed. NEEMA has also failed.
i once told my coalige that our kenyan institutions are not here to serve, bosses are busy looking for bribes to enrich themselves
True dat ✅✅✅✅✅
Colleague
Even National Environment agency is a very corrupt institution, they are bribed to close their eyes in what is happening. They enrich themselves but caring for anybody.

Thank you Citizen TV for that good investigation,Kenyan media is our only voice considering the corruption in Kenya. My heart goes out to the parents trying to save their kids.Kenyan Judiciary is a Scam
The tragedy in kenya is that, we lack planning. Any life respecting country has clear land demarcation dictating areas for residential use, areas for industrial use, areas for recreational use etc. But here in Kenya, no planning is in place, this will hurt more people as the country grows its industries. Cosmetic government bodies who do no planning
Hi Citizen TV. Ensure to cover a similar steel industry emission in Kisumu, along Kibos road.
Steel industries if not well looked after produce alot of poison, they release lead and other very poisonous substances, they want to use cheap and short cuts, state of the art machines are very expensive which controls and process the the steel without releasing harmful metals in the air. They are interested in profits. Human life to them is nothing.
@@samuelmburu4721 it's very sad. 😪
@@irenewakasa9146 we have very greedy people who behave like jackals, our country will be torn apart by corruption !! All the agencies supposed to Look into those affairs have been turned into cash cows !! They are bribed and they let the vice to continue, if you take a case to the court it takes a century without any justice.
The one that I hear has powerful people to its protection. Any one trying to investigate, the rumour goes, ends up dead
@@tonneyodhiambo6482 ;our country is in the hands of jackals, they don't care about anything.cartels are everywhere and can do anything to protect their businesses.
the claws of Tobiko just like he has arisen with the estates in Ngong, need to arise on this one too. No debates that factory must go down.
Leadership is very weak in Kenya...I think UHURU HAS THE ABILITY TO SAY SUCH DEADLY COMPANIES TO CLOSE...WHY DOES HE SILENT....JUDICIARY HAS FAILED KENYAN PEOPLE, NEMA SOME JUST TAKE BRIBES AND SILENT...😭😭😭😭😭😭
This factory must be closed
Residents must burn it down
Zoning is very important. Residential and Industrial Areas should be very clear. Is Syokimau an industrial or residential area?
That area to my understanding was made industrial.
This is the reason why when their is a change of user on land one has to be careful.
Kenya develipers just dont care.
Simple Kenyan way, never listening the experts and neighbours plea. Hope justice will be served inshAallah.
May she rest in peace 🙏💔
I am one of the workers and its only God can help us. when they found out that we were sick they sacked some of the workers. Some have passed away. This pple don't care they know that you can't do nothing be course they have closed every corner, but I believe one day they will pay for the damage in Gods name
The owner doesn't care about people's lifes.
The air we breath in in Nairobi and its environs is very polluted. If you want fresh air in Nairobi you either go to karura and other recreational parks. It's so sad that a country is killing its people slow but sure death.
Having two institutions dealing with the same matter, NEMA and NET leads to conflicts of interests. Being Kenya, someone might have been bribed to issue licences and provide incomplete reports. When is Part 2 airing?
Read the EMCA, you'll realize one (NEMA) is in charge of issuance of licences and the other (NET) is an appellate institution to the decisions of NEMA
Why now? Hopefully someone comes to the rescue of these fellow kenyans! It's a shame this has been allowed to continue this long.
Nothing changes if nothing changes💔
This is sad indeed poor government. NEMA is a curse in machakos county
So sad for the parents of the little girl, may she rest in peace.
Thieves r sitting in the seat calling themselves leaders yet they are all wicked corrupt animals.
I know that guy - Nazir Hakkada. It's true what he said about his personality changing. He is yet to get over the loss of his child... :(
Sad Indeed.. life matters
So sad story. What about other oversight bodies Parliament, county assembly? What about the worker in there?
People pretend not to care about the environment and The government allows industries to take short cuts the problem is if we ignore this all of us will pay for it Kenya is a small country there will be nowhere else to go look at parts of coastal regions where people are just dying and being heavily affected by lead poisoning if you can help put pressure on your leader, sign petitions do so the earlier we change this the better
This is very serious.
Who came to the area first? The factory or the residents?
Humans took over and they are the biggest destroyers on earth
Soo painful,..
So painful sjui kama kuna kiongozi ameona hapo kuna uhai yamtoto 🙆♀️🙆♀️
Waaa waaa waa this so bad for sua and neama is siting and eating on they home well God please help this people
Nema is full of crooks. They take bribes and close their eyes..
There have been complaints too from Devki industries in Ruiru
Can someone please explain to me why this dad did not move out of that area?
so what came first. the factory or is it the estates?
From the documenary, the factory came in later
The journalist is genious this guy knows what hez doing he understands his work. Thankz for exposing this idiots
i will blame the leaders we have, some countries the owner could have been arrested like yesterday
This is true.
No money is worth our lives....am soo sad
These are the kind of news mainstream media needs to work on not covering idiot politicians all the time.
Money, money,money.
Where is part 2?
GOD PROTECT ALL AFRICA FROM POLLUTION
The owners should be jailed for attempted murder..
That's the problem with middle-class instead of taking down the company through revolting they assume negotiations watajua hawajui
This is bad but i think most estates there came after the factories. If am not wrong i used to see factories there and athi river before estates came up.
Authorities should help reclocating the factories
Why is this country so dead.....why doesn't government care....why..why..why..why..why..
It is very devastating to be so helpless in a country that has a working government. It has taken so long as people suffer so much , may God intervene and give sense to the concerned.
JUSTICE SHOULD PREVAIL.
They should do a class action law suit.
The solo blame here is the Government and local Government urban zoning and planning laws , in Kenya you can acquire land , build any thing you like in total disregard of the physical and environmental impact of the area . Thats why you have polluting factories surrounded by Housing estates , estates built on forest land (ngong forest ) , crammed tower blocks or flats in slum areas with no amenities and the looming problem is this with an exploding population in Nairobi , Kiambu and Limuru some of the most fertile agricultural land in the country are being turned to flats and houses , how will we feed Nairobi in a few years to come i assume import food since fertile agricultural land are now all flats and complain about high cost of food
These people should wear masks whenever they go out even after the pandemic, the government doesn’t care at all.
*This pollution goes straight to internal organs how many cancer cases are in this neighbourhood*
*It also errods the teeth enamel completely*
*The govt and relevant bodies have failed time for the people to take action asap*
Close that factory let him go elsewhere. Nema should be tasked on this and the corrupt sacked.
Neema is the most corrupt agency in Kenya ,they solicit money from companies like this, many companies in Kenya do not care about environment and poisoning, all they care about is profits.
Was this Factory closed....
I think this is a great piece of environmental journalism, however I have to point out how the personal information of so many people was shared on-screen. To follow decent privacy standards and protect people, it would be really nice if you guys could blur this information out
How hard is it to stop the operations until everything is proven for the sake of the community? SGS and NEMA are failing the people
Come to Kitengela and see another one of crushing ballast who brags nothing can be done to him.
Whaaat!! Anafaa mob justice!!!
So sad
Soo shamfull as a kenya ill fully......
Corruption. A factory of this caliber should not he located in a residential area.
Nema has already taken bribe
Quiet sickening. What is our gvt doing to protect its pple? Where is the respect for human life? A young innocent girl lost her life and for what? It's just too much. When will we rise up and say enough is enough? Let's wait and see what will happen to the company directors. They deserve life imprisonment . But wait and see?
That factory needs to be burned down.Once and for all.
Wah
So unfortunate.
Kwanza hii ya KAPA OIL REFINERY is killing us
This is so sad
Alafu akina mutua anajikuna mayai na kucheka na kuogopa Ruto akimsalimia
Burn the factory down kama serikali haisaidii people power
👊✊
This type of thing should not even be up for discussion. The factories should be shutdown, owners arrested, and charged within one week. Thousands wanasuffer juu ya watu kadhaa? This is nonsense.
Close it down!!
Overhaul the management of NEMA
Yeah..burn the factory
NEMA should be disbanded.
The AirPort is enough pollution so you simply need to move from there
The factory was set up in 2016 after the residents had already settled there. This is their home they have every right to live there. They dont have to keep moving and selling their homes running from inhuman people breaking the law with impunity
Mkikuyu aki better watoto wawatu wafe lakini pesa ingie mungu anawaona tu hope wenye kiwanda mko na watoto malipo ni hapa hapa
could be owned by a politician or they paid the agency
Shame watoro githu
Kenyan justice system is garbage! Was this ever resolved? Even though no amount of money will ever be enough; were they ever compensated???
Wajackoyah the fifth to the help
Banana republic.
