I always thought Tom Bailey was very similar to Curt Smith from Tears For Fears. Thompson Twins is one of my favorite bands.

No wonder Tom suffered a nervous breakdown... the weight of trying to maintain that level of artifice....
Lol I don't think Tom ever really had a breakdown at all. My guess is that the album wasn't going to be ready on time as promised to the fans (don't forget there's a huge gap of time between the UK release of LYHOM and the album release for HTFD) so they came up with the excuse of Tom being sick from exhaustion which would be easier for the fans to symphasize and process versus lack of creative direction (Nile Rodgers being injected later in the process after Tom had failed to impress the US record execs). That's speculation but it all makes perfect sense. I think initially Tom jumped the gun in trying to get HTFD released and the whole Arista "Hit Making Machine" wasn't fully on board yet and saw the gap (lol) growing between the likes of the UK fans/masses and the US fans/masses.
