Considering that this was done in Australia - a backwater at the time - way back then, it is genuinely world class.

The first time JOK performed at Sydney Stadium was in October 1957 during the Little Richard tour. JOK performed just before Little Richard and he got more applause from the audience. I was there five rows from the stage.

Inspired some of buddy Holly’s later tracks, Buddy holly said Johnny O’keefe is one of his favourites during his Australian Tour.

Very rare. Totally real. This song was everywhere in early 60s. Isley bro’s version got no look in. He did it in two parts. No one beats this. Used to wear leopard skin suit. Audience would go wild. The backing singers are the Deltones who were sensational in their own right. His band was crash hot. Ladies and gentlemen The Wild One.

Shout was recorded in 1959 and O'Keefe says here that they have just recorded it. It's not rocket science folks! Also he clearly has his old face not the reconstructed one after his car accident. The Deejays are wearing the outfits they wore in the late 50s'. This appears to be the special performance that O'Keefe did for the filmimg of Shakin at the Stadium during the Fabian tour of that year but the film was withdrawn for copyright reasons. A Briiliant clip and great to see in its fullness.

It's an excerpt from a film that was made in 1959 titled "Rock 'n' Roll" directed by Lee Robinson. Sadly, only about nine minutes of the film survive, and Lee Robinson is no longer with us, so we can't ask him what happened to the rest of it. Thank you for sharing that Mr Greenan. It's nice to hear from someone who was there on the night.

The film has been found and is in pretty good condition. I believe it was shown in 2021 at Melbourne's ACME? In Federation Square. There is clip from it on YT, JO'K - Swanee River, you won't be disappointed.

The other day I was talking to a man who knew Lee Gordon when he was putting on concerts like this (he is now 87). He was saying what a fit man he was. He looked as if he worked out in a gym. He also got everything in writing, there were no "handshake" agreements. Thank you Peter. You're a walking encyclopaedia.

HE still had to do his own legwork to get his version of MOCKINGBIRD played by AUSTRALIAN RAIDO STATIONS as FESTIVAL records took his allready recorded version to the USA in a hope of getting it released there but it was left around for a shit box duo to record it and it was dumped in Australia before FESTIVAL released JOK'S version and raido stations played the US version saying JOK'S was a cover,no wonder he had so many breakdowns. AUSTRALIAN Artists of today owe him so much and so do we the public .RIP in peace JOK. and this version of SHOUT leaves the Isley Bros version in the shade and is the version all other artists copy in a short form. this is INSANE SHOWMANSHIP. RIP JOK.

Noel Widerberg (Delltones), featured in the video died on 7 July 1962 so it's not 63/4. Looking at the Big Shows at the Stadium that featured The Delltones, it seems more likely to be 60/61. I think that this performance features on one of the JO'K Shakin' at the Stadium eps. The Global Dog lists Vol. 2 of this ep as being released in October '61; having a problem tracking the release of Vol. 1!

My Mum & Dad were caught kissing in a shop doorway by a cop as they were walking home from seeing J OK at the Paddington Police Boys club.
The cop gave Dad a bit of a kick in the bum & said " If you're doing that to this girl you better bloody well be marrying her"
All these years later their still married.

At least two of the people you see here are still in the music business. The Drummer, John "Catfish" Purser is still doing shows. The tall man you see standing to the right of Johnny O'Keefe, Ian "Pee Wee" Wilson is also doing shows.
