Foam Fire-Suppression System: Initial Test

- NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center recently upgraded the foam fire suppression system for our aircraft support hangar. The safety system uses high expansion foam, which contains less water and chemicals making it more environmentally friendly. The foam is used to help control damage in the event of a fire and prevent the loss of any aircraft.
This 2-minute, 15-second video shows the new system being tested in the empty hangar to ensure that the consistency of the foam is correct and that it disperses quickly and evenly enough to suffocate a fire.
When I was a kid the local fire department used to spray a giant pile of that fire suppression foam in the school field for the 4th of July... guess it's not that toxic since I am still alive after playing in it.

Imagine this alarm in a school. One prankster and half the school is filled with foam.
RYA schools would never have a system like this. this is for high priority systems with electronics and highly essential equipment. I used to work at a switch tech with a vacuum system that turns on if there's a fire. There's a warning before it because if you're stuck in their with the vacuum you're dead. but the equipment was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars

Stupidly simple yet effective idea. My personal favorite type of innovation. Now just make it do double duty and use the system to aid in cleaning the hangars and jets as well.

Highly unlikely. This foam suppression system is incredibly useful for putting rampant fuel fires to bed, a tragedy that could plague any aircraft hangar, but maybe not so great at ending online hate. The foam's function is incredible, it can be quickly dispersed, covers a lot of area, and will starve any flame of oxygen. Unfortunately enough, Reddit flame wars will take a little more than foam to be quenched. Foam technology is a marvelous advancement and has been in development since 1998, which was the same year The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell plummeting 16 feet into an announcer's table.

i think this system is more for industrial areas rather than a school or mall. my guess is that with the foam it wont really matter if its a grease fire or not the foam may be able to put it out.

standing water in the
metal pipes. The initial flow through the generators has not mixed
completely to be the foam solution and cleans all this stuff out.

+odisy64 the idea is that the foam floats on top of the fuel and separates the liquid fuel from the
flames. This stops the combustion process as no more fuel vapors can escape the liquid.

I would love to do the test with real fire, this is an operational
building and the
risk would too high. The test is to verify that all of the design
parameters have been satisfied. If we get to do a live fire test in the
future...it will definitely be posted.

Just bring in the planes, cut some fundings and make over long work shifts... some engineer dude makes a daily repairing and forgets that one valve off, next shift dude comes in and never gets information an opens that other valve... third man in controlroom goes to bathroom to take a dump and then some earthquake in Japan resonates through the earth and opens up some fueltanks bolts... fuel leaks all over the place because that first valve is off due the maintaining repair, thats why the automatic system from 80's (bought from Cuba) gives automation warning and opens valve number three... because the dude from control room is taking a dump, no one is seeing the pressure gauges and warning lights... fuel burst through second valve that is left open and mixes with the foam... pressure is overwhelming inside the foam tanks and last but not least the dude in the toilet flushes!!!!
Electrostatic spark goes through the pipeline as a same time that flushed dump slams close that valve number two!!! Spark finallly finds its way in the hangar and ignites some fuel on the floor, automatic fire detector shoots that foam/fuel mix inside the hangar and the whole god damn airfield blows up with the controlroom dudes monday morning dump!!!!!
