- This is my epic parquet floor restoration transformation video! You get to see this parquet sanded and finished from start to finish. Before and after and everything in between.
howtosandafloor.com/parquet-f...
This floor is an Iroko herringbone parquet floor around 50 years old. Iroko is known for having a bad reaction with some finishes as it has salts (calcium) in the grain of the wood.
I start with a rough grit sanding, progress through to fine grits then move to the finishing sander, then filling and then again with the finishing/orbital sanders.
I love this parquet wood flooring! it has such a beautiful colour and grain. It has the iridescent ribbons that can give it such a beautiful 3D appearance.
You may notice that I completely changed direction when sanding with the big machine. This shouldn't be news to those who have read my parquet floor sanding guide. Which can be found here:

I have to apologise for the quality of the video, I will be buying a new camera so I can get 2 shots, both with high-quality cameras. - Навчання та стиль
You are a MASTER! Good to see something done the right way. Be very proud Sir. Very few people do quality work of this level.
Love the bird in the back ground! Great job on a floor I would have thought beyond repair. Excellent work! Thanks for sharing.
beautiful floor and very lovely little bird singing in the back ground. nice video. thanks
When you started and i saw the wood, i said "good luck!". But then, wow! that's amazing!
Well done! Love the finishing on the floor! And the bird in the background approves too! 😆
The music selection is amazing!
The saddest part of this, - is the fact that so few people can percieve the difference between your perfectionism & a cowboys substandard effort. BTW - This is an outstanding result, - Best of the best......( from a 20yr. floor sanding vet.)
I got a question to a old head in the business… say your sanding a harring bone floor and you don’t have them trio machines how do you sand them with big machine and not leave them cross cut marks for when they use a stain and not just clear coat?? Jw I been in the business for bout 3 or so years and was jw for the future thanks!!
After you try to refinish a floor yourself once, you will know for sure how to tell a pro job from cowboy’s.
You will know it from your own mistakes and from understanding of what is really difficult in this job vs what people _think_ is difficult.
delicious! alot of love and care gone into that job.
That is definitely an epic transformation! There are many others performing this floor restorations task so well, one of them is Wayne Maher Hardwood Flooring
Incredible job man!
Damn man you are good! Enjoy watching your videos.
well done! beautiful.
Amazing work .
This stuff is totally out of my domain but still really enjoyed your vid. Hats off to you for working with the camera you have and not letting the goal of acquiring better gear be a blocker. Thanks for sharing your craft with the world.
Alexander Diaz I bought a better car after this video lol
How To Sand A Floor lol
Alexander Diaz holy cow, autocorrect has been terrible recently. I bought a new cam
beautiful job,well done.
this repair job is artwork in itself
Thank you brother :D
wow ! thats amazing, I have a parquet floor and was wondering if it was worth restoring...you sold it to me .
excellent video. thanks!
That turned out nice mate.
I'll be honest I didn't know what to think of you initially, but damn... Absolutely incredible, gorgeous work! Subbed
Nice work🍉
Amazing job
Polski partacz w jukej thank you!!
Great stuff.
Hey Ben, I assume this was finished with Bona Traffic or x98. Did you prime before or was it not necessary on this floor? thanks, great vid btw
I've bought a new house and one of the rooms has a worn floor very similar in size and style to this, what's the price range to get this done?
Beautiful...
Great Job
Hi Ben, thanks for the video. You have any video on how to fix the cracking sound after the floor has been polished.
Thanks for showing us DIYers how to do a parquet floor. Any chance you can give us the names of the products you use? i.e. what did you use to fill the floor with after sanding#1?
When I do this I use Bona products, so you just have to match the filler color with the type of wood. So if it's a white oak floor then I use Bona Pacific Filler in the white oak color. Then use the Bona sealer and top coat of your choice.
Really like that wood. What ever it is.
TelaKalle oy it’s iroko AKA African Teak!
@@HowToSandAFloor Cheers mate. In finland merbau is rearest that i have seen :D "Juniper square parket now that was rare and soft"
Dude you are a f****** beast you ran that floor exactly how I would run it except I like the logler edger but awesome job for looks amazing we just did a cherry parquet floor never see one before turned out really nice anyway love your videos awesome job you sir are f****** awesome
Thank you brother! I have the lagler Flip now 😀
you're so good!
nice work :)
Hey I have a parquet floor but mom are the 9” square one, they are thin and I’m wondering if the ones you sanded in this video are of the same thickness and if so what grit of sand paper did you use?
thats the way you wil work whit woodflooring nice job
Nice! Looks like you could skate on it.
A great job, I often think the floor looks so much better when the wood is left natural but presume it cannot just be left like that?
you gotta fan in Ohio! I have tons of red oak floors in my city
Holy sh#*!!!! That’s amazing. Can you come to my place in Northern Alberta Canada and do my rooms? 🙏. I’m hating the existing parquet flooring and have been contemplating tiling over it. Your video makes me want to get a quote now on having mine professionally resurfaced. Thanks tons for sharing your expertise. 👍👍
some come out better than others, the species of wood in this video is just stunning
This is great - how often do you need to change the sandpaper? This looks like you barely did that at all?
Couple of questions - what was the area of this room and how long did it take to do the job? Also, how difficult was it to clean up after the work? Was the dust manageable? Thank you in advance! :)
Can you recommend how to stick back down the little tiles that have bitumen and a decent oil based varnish?
It's a little off topic but do you need to install Cork strips around the whole perimeter of a herringbone hardwood floor?
What did you use to fill the floor in at 4:35? I have a basket weave parquet floor to try and make look nicer.
Hi I was wondering, for calculation purpose, how long does it take to sand one square meter, independent of the grit grade.
Biutifull, your good.
What stain did u use ? I can't decide for my parquet or should I just go natural ?
New subscriber here love your vids ….Q: what grit number sandpapers do you recommend from course to finish? And what finishing emulsion do you recommend? TIA 👍
The grit you use depends on how badly the floor is damaged. If it's damaged pretty bad, then start a the lowest grit you can find. If it's a new installation, then I typically start with a 36 grit since the boards can sometimes have a "lip" that's higher than its neighbor. If it's an older floor that's not damaged and is already flat, so that you just want to remove the existing finish, then I start at an 80 grit. Wherever you start at, you want to make sure you only skip no more than one grit level. So if you start at 36 grit, then you can skip 40 grit, but you can't skip 60 grit. So the grit pattern looks like 36, then 60, then 100, etc. to the final grit that's recommended on the bottle of the finish you're using. If you're ever in doubt then don't skip the next highest grit level, just go through each one of them. It will take longer, but you're less likely to leave any unsightly scratches or marks in the floor.
@@CheeseBae hey, many thanks for your advice ....really appreciate it 👍
That floor. Dam.
How does a simple Woodboy perform versus the 3 disc sander you use for final sanding?
I don’t have any machines like this but I rent an apartment with a terribly stained wooden floor. What is a lowbudget way to still make this floor better than it is now?
I second this! I can't afford a sanding machine but I could do everything else
I love how the floor looks at minute 5:48. Is there any way to keep that look?
Yes, for your sealer use Bona NaturalSeal. It has a subtle pigment in it to give it the "just sanded" look. Next put on two top coats of Bona Mega One or Bona Traffic HD in the "Extra Matte" sheen level. If it's a commercial job, then you do three top coats.
Any issues with the lacquer + dust fill cracking over time due to expansion and contraction of wood?
Yes depending on the species of wood. This was iroko which has a very high moisture content and doesn't expand and contract much. Beech on the other hand is unbearable it moves so much
Nice job!
Thank you!
Hello, where are you based? We need our living room and hallway floor restoring and it’s exactly like this :)
may i know what chemical shiner is used to shine it? is it kinda permanent gloss? thank you.
Lagler humel are great machines. How much does the trio make a difference?
You should get a nice back unit vacuum man. They are only like $400 and oh my word do they make clean up so much easier. Do you usually use the wood dough, or was this floor bad? Do you usually use water base?
Ronald Hodgson you mean like those back pack vacuums?
And yeah usually waterbased top coats. We don’t have the precoloured trowel filler over here
@@HowToSandAFloor, yeah the Proteam is the brand I use. They are just treat for cleaning floors before filling or finish.
@@HowToSandAFloor, I use wood dough for 3/8 flooring, but yeah usually I use the water based colored filler.
I like that floor, in my area it is nonexistant. It is pretty plain straights. Usually white/red oak mix.
What changes colour of this wood?
Gap filler or base coat (akka sealer akka conditioner akka 1st coat akka primer akka impregnation) ?
hey bro if wood has paint on it do you strip it off first or just go right down to sanding
furiookami depends on how many layers of paint it’s had, I’ve worked in a school where it had been painted so many times we had to use a special drum cover in blades to cut it away.
1-3 layers; just crack on with the sanding, nice low grit, 24 maybe. Belts may last longer if you only go backwards when removing the paint 👍🏻
@@laurenceosborne4261 it's painted once, silver, and chipping all over. thanks for the advice!
You get some of that nice 12 grit and go at it. lol
Omg i would be happy to pay you to come and sort out my floor
hi what product do you use? , I see you used 2 types of products
What's the name of the sander on wheels?
What type of roller are you using?
Didn't hear you say what types of material you was using and what they're were for and purpose they had since you criticize so much other peoples work..
You did nice job i give you that..
Goood job man. But i will have backache for sure
May we please see a video of examples of a 3K,5K,and a 10K refinish? Unknown if my numbers are even close. You know what I mean.
Hi what sander is that please mate
what did you use a s a filler after sanding?
A resin binder to mix with the wood dust, I have a video about how i do filling
Any videos of Stair work?
what is the product you used to finish the floor
Where do you buy your socks Wilco
Was it water based or oil based polyurethane?
Water
There's no link on the screen at the end.
Looks orange peel in the light ever try t-bar application if so why do you prefer rolling
And you run the trio just like me only problem is I'm having a real hard time the trio is so smooth compared to my edges and I'm Palm sanding with the 120 and trio in with a hundred and sometimes I still get a border I don't know what the hell I'm doing wrong and I'm water popping sometimes on the darker colors any help you could give me appreciate it thank you keep up the great work
Im not going to lie, the trio takes me a bit extra time. Ill usually belt to 80 grit, then drop to 60 on the trio without the flexi-rings, hard plate it flat. Fill it with the trip dust, take off the filler with the blunt 60s (sometimes having to put fresh 60's on, then 80 and 100 with flexi rings.
Recently after 10+ years only using the trio with the weight on, I now never use the weight. I find it works just as well but the abrasives last longer
@@HowToSandAFloor yeah I've always used the flexing rigs somebody else told me that might be my problem too and a lot of the times I like using a weight because if the floor isn't completely even it bounces like crazy
@@HowToSandAFloor also thanks for the response I really appreciate it man thanks for taking the time there's not a lot of us four guys out there especially in Pennsylvania United States a rare breed my brother but I appreciate it I love the videos
@@HowToSandAFloor hey brother do you screen after you do your trio like do you screen with your roto
Great video thanks for sharing. I suspect your other video doesn't get as many hits just because it says "How pros create floors like glass" on the thumbnail and high gloss floors have fallen out of fashion somewhat and show scratches more. I'd recommend changing the title and thumbnail to something along the lines of "DIY How to Sand Floors like a Pro" because most people probably don't search for 'refinishing' but rather 'sanding'.
People in the U.K. search sanding but in the states they search refinishing. But I definitely take your Point about the glass, I only meant perfectly flat, not shiny!
@@HowToSandAFloor oh that makes more sense. Fair point well made.
Im in the US and i haven't seen these Machines. What brand are they?
Lagler, might be the biggest brand in the US. Not so much in the rental market though
@@HowToSandAFloor yeah i rent all the time.(clark ) And now i was looking in to buying my machines . .. thank you
Daryen Mirabal the Clark machines are good! Maybe lagler is slightly better I'm not sure, both very good
I wish I could plug my hummel right into a wall outlet.
Can you share the names of the different pieces of equipment you show in this video?
Dane Sorensen Lagler hummel, Lagler trio, festool Rotex, festool extractor, Pallmann Gecko 2 edger. Numatic woodworker buffer. Fein multimaster
@@HowToSandAFloor
Which is the Sander with wheels?
Thx
@@bethbartlett5692 At least 3 of the sanders have wheels.
Great machines but must be a pain to carry them around. I'm starting to build my own equipment for flooring but I am modifying all I can. Do you have Instagram matey?
I do it’s @benonfloors
@@HowToSandAFloor where are you based ? I’m looking for someone to come for our hallway
what's that music?
how is this a parquet floor pattern and not a herringbone pattern?
Beautiful work there, it's just a shame about that awful mint green paintjob and the rather shabby-looking skirting boards. Although they didn't stand out so much when the floor was also grotty.
Can I hire you to do my restaurant floor?
Where do you buy the oak sawdust to fill gaps with the IRCOl filler stuff
We don’t but it we take it out of the dust collection bags of the machines, that way you’re filling with the same dust as the wood of the floor.
@@HowToSandAFloor how do you do the filling? it's a little unclear what you're using. thank you
#
@3:40 That music... are you going to wax the floor with Cheese?
Hummels are the best
That's about the weirdest floor pattern I've seen. They didn't mix the colors evenly or it's a repair spot to get that light stripe going through it.
I did wonder whether the line of pale blocks and then the line of darker blocks was intentional. I prefer them all mixed up.
Is that semi gloss?
This one was matt finish
@@HowToSandAFloor thank you
pretty sure it was matt finish
Trio??!!!! u need to upgrade to the flexiSander bro,U get a way better finish👍
Es resina Epoxi 🙂😺
A shame where I live everything new now is laminate. Those who have hardwoods, live in a 90 year old house that are too cheap or poor to redo their floors properly. Nothing like walking into an old house and seeing the same brown hard wood floors from paint
I need sir work
I made it with Woodglut plans!
So was helping my aunt about a year ago, I was doing good till I hit a spot that the wood was rotted and not secured and I was getting a drink ... attached cup holder for my beer to sander... and I cut into the floor, the machine started wobbling crazy and the pieces came up, 2 stuck in the wall across the room and 1 went out the new double pane window glass. The beer bottle spilled on the sanded floor part and I let go of the sander to grab it and it started spinning in circles to the cord ripped out of the wall outlet. Between the outlet and the buffer was a gallon of polyurethane gallon can that smacked against the wall and the lid wasn’t on all the way because we opened it to look, as if we knew what we were looking at to begin with but smelled great.... think I was high also from fumes, anyway we have poly on the walls, ceiling and floors. She threw me out I will see her after a year at a wedding... oh, her son in law fixed everything...
That doesn't look like the dirty scuffed badly worn floor that was shown at the beginning of the video.
Rare to see a true HARDWOOD floor in Europe. At the other hand it's hard to see a softwood floor in RIO. It's a tough sand down here
LiPe VoLcOm there’s tons of this stuff in the U.K.
Why would anyone want to have an orangy, glass looking wooden floor ?? If you have wood for a floor why not trying to have something that looks a little bit more natural ? I really don't get it.
The floor looks great, but i don't care for the pattern.
It’s very common over here. For me, I love it but that because I sand it a lot! I now people think it’s a little old fashioned now
Wow - I LOVE IT! Here in the Sonoran Desert near Scottsdale, AZ, USA - we have thousands of people using wood look tile and they pay double the price to have it laid in a herringbone pattern. We don’t have many older homes here with hard wood floors. That’s beautiful - craftsmanship is never old fashioned.😎🌵🇺🇸
