DON'T BE RUDE, THEY WERE PLAYING HANDBALL HOW DO YOU PLAY HANDBALL, IN JERSEYS AND OVERALLS? THAT WOULD BE LIKE GOING TO A MARRIAGE IN A TUXEDO, IT MAKE ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE WHAT-SO-EVER!
9:40 That's the point! He doesn't need a broken keyboard, no-one does! It might be a little bit of an inside joke, but anyone who's ever been in a thrift shop knows that it's hard to resist buying stupid stuff just because it's cheap.
Todd: And Macklemore, whats the first line in your song? Macklemore: I walk into the club like "What up, I got a big cock" Todd: . . . . . . . . . I can't argue with that. *I laugh my ass out in this part of the video XD*
One of my favorite Todd reviews. Enjoy both these songs. "Suit & Tie" for its suave coolness, and "Thrift Shop" as someone who's not afraid to admit that probably around 1/4 of his wardrobe comes from thrift shops. Also, lol at calling a shirt an "un-hoodie".
the guy that made the thrift shop song literally performed a miracle if you think about it he made a popular song that actually gives poor people good advice.
Ashley Hrudowsky I consider both songs to be like regular water and sparkling water respectively. Yeah, you can always rely on normal water (Thrift Shop). Sure, sparkling water (Suit and Tie) is an acquired taste. Personally, I don't have a problem with drinking either.
I'm so happy he likes both songs! I'm at a stalemate with both as well. JT really came back strong on this one. Also, Macklemore did a good job of making a first impression!
I see Thrift shop as an original themed song where Macklemore is basically telling you that you can dress however you want, which I tink is really interesting. also because he is not inciting people to spend loads of money on expensive clothes and reusing old ones. Thus giving insight to our consumer society, where you don't need to buy what the economy wants you to buy.
And also, this is the guy that knows that a "molly" is a word for ecstasy and "getting a line" is snorting cocaine...yet he doesn't know that a "fatty" is really a overstuffed joint of cannabis. Sort of odd when you think about it.
Maybe he's just into the hard shit. /JK Also, he does these reviews for comic value (his top 10 lists are more serious) And lastly, the lines from We Won't Stop make no sense without their double-meaning. "Fatty" can make at least some sense either way. (EDIT: Oh, this is 4 months ago. Sorry to bother you.)
I don't understand why but I hate "Suit & Tie", can't stand the sound of it, not even the short snippets in this video. Each time Macklemore comes up it's a relief to me. "Thrift Shop" is fun, has a catchy beat and doesn't take itself so seriously. Justin is a great artist and I enjoy many of his songs, but this one... glad it's not a radio hit in my country.
Funny that Todd should mention "Vogue": they both have the same director, David Fincher. (Yes, *that* David Fincher. More than one famous film director worked on music videos before movies - ask Michael Bay).
While I like both of Macklemore's biggest hits, my favourite song from him has got to be Can't Hold Us. It's a pump up, explosive anthem with a voice and a purpose, and it's here to stay.
For some reason ever since I heard Thrift Shop I just can't get enough of it. Somehow it just struck a cord with me and stuck. Then I listened so some more by Maclemore and kinda liked them too. I've seen some hit from nowhere, but he just blew the scene up somehow. Literally from zero to hero
I can't decide which i like more between the two songs, but in terms of fashion... Yeah, I will admit. I love suits and ties...tuxedos and dress shoes. I love feeling classy. I'll even wear tap hats and classy fedoras. I legitimately love the style and class of the retro speaking. However, I have been to a couple thrift stores and there are some awesome clothes there. I saw ten dollar tuxedos for pete sake. So really, you can't go wrong with a thrift shop for cheap styles of all types. And plus, there might be some moments you don't want a suit and tie (but really, if I had a choice, I would wear a tux around the house if it was more comfortable) you can buy a shit ton of other clothing that you do like for dirt cheap. It's hard to choose between the two really.
***** Sharpe Dressed Man by ZZ Top. Was there ever a sitcom that didn't use that song for a montage of a character trying out a bunch of new looks in a store while that played in a background? It was like you couldn't get away from that song for awhile.
there's a very clear winner here - Thrift Shop. Suit and Tie has that awful falsetto, the lyrics are weak, the production is too tightly controlled, which makes it sound like a cheap keyboard demo rather than an actual song, and I'm not gonna lie, I think Jay-Z sucks. Not just on the song, in general. Thrift Shop has fun lyrics that gradually bait and switch into a decent point to be made. Macklemore's got more class to his voice than that shit falsetto in Suit and Tie, even when he's making jokes about R. Kelly. The production is some of the best I've heard on a pop song in years, and Macklemore is repping smaller artists which I think is much more admirable than using Jay-Z. For the record, I think suits and ties are shitty to begin with and thrift store clothes are fucking awesome. But that has no effect on how much I enjoy the songs. Suit and Tie is just a bad song to me.
+BassbaitGG Look at these two songs done by the Kidz Bop Kids, both versions sounded way better than the original versions, except the lyrics changed replaced the original lyrics due to profanity, just the like the way it sounded when it was on the radio when they were clean to eliminate swearing. These two songs are from "Kidz Bop 24", and they did a great job when these group of five talented young people singing their butts out of the two original artists. Thanks Kidz Bop for covered these two songs and make it sounded a lot better.
Yeah, Justin's vocals are admittedly quite weak and I don't think he had to spend so much time in his upper range. I honestly think he'd sound cooler in his lower register. And you never know, for all we know Macklemore may have bought that broken keyboard for Justin as a joke present, but he didn't clock on to it and decided to use it in his song
***** it's entirely possible, considering local use of language and the near constant change of code words in such language. There are songs that use certain terminology unique to an area precisely because the artist grew up in that area and is intimately familiar with the vernacular in use.
Suit & Tie is cool and I love the retro sound of it and the black and white look of the video, while Thrift Shop is fun and I like how he says that brands like Gucci are pricey. So yeah, it's a draw; they're both good songs.
Is it just me, or is Suit and Tie kind of frustrating? I mean, it's got a great beat, good retro horns, wonderful production, Justin's surprisingly sexy (if high-pitched) voice... coupled with lyrics that keep unexpectedly veering off into the pointlessly crass. I mean, there's the "fatty" line, there's "shit tie," and there's that weird "little doozy when she does it." (Jay-Z does the same thing, but it's less annoying because you kind of expect that in a rap guest verse.) It actively fights the suave image the song's clearly trying to build.
I don't know. At first I liked Macklemore but as I was listening to The Heist, I noticed that along with anti-materialism songs Wings and Thrift Shop, there was a song called White Walls, about Cadillacs and… how great Cadillacs are. It even has a music video. But if he isn't even going to hide hypocrisy like that, it's pretty clear that he thinks his fans are stupid and that he's probably just in it for the money. It's cool and edgy to be pro-gay and anti-materialism right now. It's a safe time to do that so Macklemore is here to swoop in and rake in the cash.
Actually, to be fair, the car he's bragging about in White Walls (the song you're talking about) is an old Cadillac that was handed down to him from his grandpa and is one that he put hard work and $30,000.00 in to, so I'd say that from that, he's earned the right to brag about the Caddy. I see where you're coming from, but I can't really agree about him being hypocritical because if he really was being a hypocrite, I would think that the song would go to the level that Bugatti by Ace Hood went to where he just bragged about buying an expensive sports car worth millions of dollars and spending thousands of dollars more having needless and flashy accessories installed in it. I do respect your opinion, though.
Hmmm I didn't know about that. Hehe maybe I can listen to Macklemore guilt-free now. It isn't specified in the lyrics, though. Did he say that in an interview or something?
psychicbyinternet Actually, it is specified in the lyrics. "I'm rollin' in the same whip that my grandad had." "30k on the Caddy, now how backpack rap is that?" "But I really wanted a Caddy so I put in the hours And roll on over to the dealer And I found the car, junior, there's a bargain with this geezer Got the keys in and as I was leaving I started screaming"
To me Suit & Tie feels like a trashy song trying to dress itself up as classy. I mean, it opens with "I be on my suit and tie, shit tied, shit tied". Whatever the flying hell that means, calling some part of you outfit "shit" (presumably in that ironic "shit means something cool" way) doesn't make me think "elegant", "classy" or "sexy".
Ok, the song Thrift shop kinda gets on my nerves after hearing it nonstop. I do like the message though. I have to side with jt on which i like better though. Just my personal opinion i guess.
I long for the day when musicians don't feel the need to repeat an annoying horn riff throughout the whole song. ugh, I still can't listen to JLo's Get Right.
Suit & Tie is a great song. im not a fan of Thrift Shop. it is a pretty catchy song though and i agree with Todd about how thats the type of career beginning song that turns people into a one hit wonder. you also gotta remember that Eminem started the EXACT same way with the goofy as hell My Name Is and still became a huge success. it wasnt even common knowledge that he was signed with Dr Dre at that point so everyone just went off of that one song. Cant Hold Us is a great followup and I think Macklemore could be huge if he goes about it the right way. i also LOVE that Todd had to look up skeet blanket
The only part of Thrift Shop I enjoy listening to is when Macklemore isn't rapping. The rest of it is catchy and Macklemore just makes it bland. Also he looks like he shaved his head and wore Donald Trump's hairpiece.
"Time to wear tuxes for no reason." Look's like someone's been watching The Room.
I totally thought of the room when Jay Z said "I'll show you how I do this huh".
I'm thinking The Room needs a music video with that now...
I think its "tom ford tuxedo for no reason", making sure you know its a damn expensive tux
Ha what a story jon
DON'T BE RUDE, THEY WERE PLAYING HANDBALL
HOW DO YOU PLAY HANDBALL, IN JERSEYS AND OVERALLS?
THAT WOULD BE LIKE GOING TO A MARRIAGE IN A TUXEDO, IT MAKE ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE WHAT-SO-EVER!
My god todd you are amazing on the piano.
It's 6:20 in the morning, and I've been on a Todd in the Shadows binge...This is fucking awesome. Sorry Macklemore.
9:40 That's the point! He doesn't need a broken keyboard, no-one does! It might be a little bit of an inside joke, but anyone who's ever been in a thrift shop knows that it's hard to resist buying stupid stuff just because it's cheap.
But shit, it was 99 cents!
littleblueclovers Eeeexactly. XD
littleblueclovers Bag it!
+Bridget NicRiobard well that's also todd's point. if you need to take the song serious or not.
These are two of my favorite men in the music industry. Thank you for giving them both the appreciation they deserve!
Todd: And Macklemore, whats the first line in your song?
Macklemore: I walk into the club like "What up, I got a big cock"
Todd: . . . . . . . . . I can't argue with that.
*I laugh my ass out in this part of the video XD*
my dad is over 50 who listens to old classic songs and hates pop, but sings Thrift Shop constantly...THRIFT SHOP WINS (in my view)
No. Justin just threw me away with his classy comeback even though I often had thrift shop stuck in myhead.
He means fatty cigar.
Listening to both songs together makes me like Thrift Shop even more and Suit and Tie even less.
Ashley Hrudowsky I consider both songs to be like regular water and sparkling water respectively. Yeah, you can always rely on normal water (Thrift Shop). Sure, sparkling water (Suit and Tie) is an acquired taste. Personally, I don't have a problem with drinking either.
"Sir, you have my undying loyalty." -Todd. You're awesome.
That R Kelly joke is actually very relevant now in 2019
just add a daft punk helmet and you can get lucky in a suit and tie from the thrift shop!
Daft Punk's suits are DEFINITELY not from the thrift shop
no but you can make replica helmets out of the things from the thrift shop...
+rct3isepic That would take some serious McGuyver skills.
I'm so happy he likes both songs! I'm at a stalemate with both as well. JT really came back strong on this one. Also, Macklemore did a good job of making a first impression!
"I'll buy a suit and tie at the thrift shop" genius
Todd made a whole review of Suit and Tie and not a single joke about Barney from How I Met Your Mother. Shame shame Todd, shame shame
Yeah. Any joke he could have made about How I Met Your Mother would be funnier than.... well any joke actually from How I Met Your Mother.
Can I download Todd's piano mixed up version of these too songs? His piano playing was awesome!
...do you not own pants?
***** I know it was awhile ago but do. can't hold us by mackelmore and Ryan lewis vs roar by katty Perry

This is my favorite review, I wish he had a full version of his "suit and tie from the thrift shop" remix! :D

"Thrift Shop" is fun, has a catchy beat and doesn't take itself so seriously. Justin is a great artist and I enjoy many of his songs, but this one... glad it's not a radio hit in my country.
ikr...I think his voice is just...not perfect
I need to download "Suit and Tie from the thrift shop" ASAP!
"Thrift shop" - the anthem of the post GFC-era
Funny that Todd should mention "Vogue": they both have the same director, David Fincher. (Yes, *that* David Fincher. More than one famous film director worked on music videos before movies - ask Michael Bay).
+Grace Carpinter Michel Gondry, McG, Zack Snyder, Spike Jonze, Gore Verbinski, F. Gary Gray, Antoine Fuqua
When Justin sings "let me show me a few things" does anyone instead hear "let me show you my poop bag"? (or is it just me?)
"shit tie shit tie"
Oh thanks. Now I'll never be able to hear the actual lyrics
+hobopanda I don't know why you would ever want too
Bezourx good point
Hey, JT.... DONT EVER LEAVE TODD ALONE AGAIN....for that long
The 3 Stooges tie was pretty cool!
Is there ever an actual winner?
While I like both of Macklemore's biggest hits, my favourite song from him has got to be Can't Hold Us. It's a pump up, explosive anthem with a voice and a purpose, and it's here to stay.
I wish I could play piano as good as Todd.
3:13 Is that a zoot suit?
For some reason ever since I heard Thrift Shop I just can't get enough of it. Somehow it just struck a cord with me and stuck. Then I listened so some more by Maclemore and kinda liked them too. I've seen some hit from nowhere, but he just blew the scene up somehow. Literally from zero to hero
A major hunk! From zero to hero, who da thunk?! (I couldn't help myself; that song will always be associated with the phrase "zero to hero"for me.)
I can't decide which i like more between the two songs, but in terms of fashion...

Choosing between these songs really is like choosing between Suit and Tie- There's a very clear, far better third option
+Tony O'Neill Basically any other article of clothing?
sugarfrosted Have both
what is the song at the verrry end of the video? ive looked everywhere even the description of the origional video but i can't find it?
***** thanks so much.

13:28 what that song called
sharp dressed man ZZ top
the pinnacle of suit songs (besides possibly nothing suits me like a suit)
jmr022499 ZZ Top be so fine. Southern guitar at its finest. Other than Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Darude-sandstorm
Mr Wood 0234 lol
holy shit this video has more views that the one on todd's channel
+Metro Nerds It's been here longer.
I'd use a suit and tie if you get to use a top hat, cane, and monocle too :D
What was the ending song?
"Sharp Dressed Man" by ZZ Top.

5:42 *criterion
3:00 Filthy Frank cameo lol
I guess that's a "Suit and Tie"
I think Todd does not get that his buying it for no reason...thats the fun. Justin and Jay are boring.
I always thought the line about "a fatty" was referring to a type of suit. o_o

Todd skipped the real first line of Thrift shop.
And at the end he chose Suit and Tie over Thrift Shop
***** LOL but seriously all jokes aside he did technically choose Suit and Tie over Thrift Shop
Umm... a 'fatty' is a... you know, a blunt. a spliff. A hand-rolled cigarette of mary-ju-wana.
I guess that's why they call it "high class".
YEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHH!
JT can't even compete with Ryan Lewis' funky beats
Thrift shop Is a complete other song on piano
Honestly i like the piano version more
For me Suit and Tie wins out of the two songs but I prefer Macklemore overall.
As usual, I have to agree with Todd on a lot of levels.
I still like Justin better though.
nahhhhhhhhh thrift shop wins
I don't think that fatty lyric is about a woman's ass. Probably about some kind of plant.
