Thanks Dan, all your testing has helped me with a troubling memory of my son & I's 1st Father's day trip to Alabama Gold Camp in 2020 with our first homemade wooden sluice. I was certain that the angle was off & lost our Gold to the tailings pile. I believe now, we were in the wrong spot. We have be back to AGC numerous times & all ways enjoy the excursions. Thanks again for,... man, for those that haven't run a Highbanker & done a full clean-up and reset, that is load of work + filming & narration.
I give you a true "Thank You".

Awesome job Dan. I taught electronics and computers for nearly ten years and I have to say that nothing in my personal experience taught me more than seeing all the types of mistakes that students made. Everyone sees something that is made to look interesting thinking, hey I could do that. They just fail to realize in most cases that the person doing what they think looks easy has a lot of experience and skill. I guess that's why you make searching for GOLD look easy. Excellent video showing common problems that might be encountered.

Dan here is my public critical comment for all to read. You are a wonderful human being and VERY MUCH appreciated by me. Thank you for the gift of knowledge you constantly pass on to me and others. Your the type of person the World needs more of as an example of how to treat other people much different then others of a critical nature who are intimidated by your knowledge and need to self analyze critically themselves to see what kind of human being they truly are after deep, thoughtful and long, repeated and, daily self reflection.

I think this is one of your best videos. I learned a lot, seeing the errors, helped explain why things are set up and run like they are. I really was expecting to see a lot of gold in the bin with every run, and was amazed how little gold you were actually losing, doing everything wrong. Again, this was a great teaching video. Thanks

Nice that you show what happens when you just set your sluice up WRONG. I've spent too many years working to make sure mine was right before putting anything in it that might have any gold in it, not to mention how many times I've shown others what they were doing wrong with theirs, but I've never actually thought to show them WHY and what happened when they had been running theirs like that with good stuff going through it. Then I had to explain why I was breaking those same recommendations while using mine, however; mine is 4' long with Hungarian riffles, miners moss and ridged carpet underneath. Up front I have 1' long with a piece of half inch stainless steel punch plate that runs over the first riffle to give anything heavy a better chance of dropping out as soon as possible. I designed it to run fast and hot, with enough water running through it, I use a 2" drop from point to point, and shovel a full number 2 once a minute. I've put a large bin behind it and check pans have never shown any GOLD in the bin. I love the fishing weights on the third run where you overload the sluice, LOL.
Did you move the bin during the run with the mats backwards? During the run where you show it running right after you put it in, the shot shows the bin missing from behind the sluice.

I do know that we all feel a lot better. A collective sigh of relief. Way to Go DAN!!! You absolutely rock. There is gold that is much finer. Have you ever seen it? I wonder if you classify under #100 and run the same test. Would a gram of Gold under a hundred mesh blow through? I think what that guy is saying is that there is a complete other world of microfine gold .Less than #200 ? Less than #300? A gentleman called Aussie Bloke Prospector has an interesting solution. He has a vibrator on his sluice. low angle.
Your gold all looks like the gold on the back of a box that the gold pan comes in. With a picture of some course gold and some fines. I believe what your guy is saying is there is 40% microfine Gold sailing by .Get a pan a quarter full of this stuff. Then do what you are taught to do. start sloshing it around. Maybe run it through a sluice and Wa La .....you just tossed it out. I live in the most ancient mountain range. (Boston Mountains) and we have an ancient sea bed. Super fine silver, platinum and gold is the order of the day .Assay What? Call me Caliche Wan. Just don't call me late to dinner.

Love this video. Yesterday evening we set up a homemade River sluice to show the kids and as it was getting dark and we were still putting the material through it I noticed the rock shifted under the sluice and it was tipped pretty steep and to the left which made the top diverter bring in a lot more water then normal. Watching this makes me feel better that we probably didn't lose much other than maybe some micro gold.

So I'm in the California mother load and we have a local Creek that has pretty good gold in it. I've seen some decent size nuggets up to a couple of grams but most of it is usually pretty fine. One of our buddies took all the ripples and mats out of his 3 ft sluice and put the small rubber mat from top to bottom. He classified it really well and then ran the box at a very shallow angle with very little water. Maybe half an inch or so. He was the fine gold winner! It took a little while for it to actually clear the black sand that we have tons of here but when it cleared out they was lots and lots of super fine gold until about half or maybe 2/3 down the box. Just goes to show that what works is what works. Hope everybody has a bright yellow day!

About time someone did this; this was most informative to watch. Now, I only have to find somewhere local to where I am which actually has more than trace amounts of gold...
Seriously though, speaking with my scientific hat on (flat, tweed) I think that the manufacturers of matting are working with the wrong model of hydrodynamics in mind. They are assuming laminar flow and classical hydrodynamics. What you've just proved is that the water flow over matting is a combination of turbulent flow and boundary layer effects; the artfully-shaped flow channels in the matting are a waste of time. Effectively what is needed is what the top mat already has; sharp edges and deep grooves designed to set up turbulence over and to some extent in the grooves which washes lighter material out, and lets gold sit in the boundary layer and remain.
The CleanGold magnetic matting does a similar thing to this: this is a flat plastic sheet backed by thin, parallel magnets. To use it you coat it with fine magnetite sand which produces a corduroy effect which creates micro-turbulence and also gives micro-gold somewhere to sit under the black sand. The Nome beach miners (the more perceptive ones, anyway) use this to great effect to retrieve very fine gold from sand.

Awesome Gold there Dan. I remember reading that fellow's 40% comment. He was a bit harsh.
Cheers buddy. Keep up the good gold recovery

I love this video Dan, I'm going to forward it to my buddies who always complain about sticking my hand in the box to clean out some big rocks, all I hear is " hey man, your gonna blow the gold outta the box when you do that!".....sheesh, ease up guys, lol. Great information as always sir!

Interesting experiment on loss of gold due to improper sluice settings!! When my sluice had no legs many times it would slide out of level, and often wondered how much was lost when this happened.
Now we know its not as bad as we think...
Thanks Dan for putting the time in, and proving to the know it all's that they in fact don't know it all.
Folks ask me for advice here and there and then argue about the answer. Why did they ask in the first place... Ever knowing know it all's abound everywhere ya look nowadays!
make em eat crow i say..

From one Dan to another, your videos are a true inspiration! Just bought myself some pans and a small sluice - so now I'm ready to head out, (hope to) find some gold and probably make a lot of mistakes along the way :D

Good one Dan. I reckon I have made all those mistakes when I wasn't even trying. Really enjoyed the tests. Now I don't feel so bad about some of the poor runs I have done!
