Years ago if you operated petrol engined vehicles it was advised to have some ventilation since petrol fumes which are explosive are heavier than air so will accumulate at the bottom of the inspection pit. For the work Tom is doing and it’s exposed to the open atmosphere his pit doesn’t need a ventilation fan

Co2 & Argon are heavier than air so could build up in the pit if a lot of welding being done in the vicinity, but if your head stays above ground level when in the pit, should be okay, could always fit a CO2 alarm sensor.
Pit is a fantastic idea for servicing a vaderstad drill. I hate greasing ours up and its only a 3m. Gotta climb into the disc system to get it fully greased from above.

Was it a squre plough in the nettles? They stopped using pits in car garages as petrol fumes (poisonous & flammamble) sink to the lowest point. That's why they all have 4 post lifts.
I think the yellow machine was a disc plough , its used like a reversable plough but with only one det of boards or discs and just pivots instead of turning over. Dont you need a big machine with pto to run the new chipper. Orcan you get an aftermarket kit to fit it toquad trac.
you dont have to have a vent/fan legally , and for the amount tom will use the pit i would think it would be fine , but in a enclosed car workshop for example where the pit is used daily etc ventilation is a must

I don't know if there is a law about inspection pits, but it's advised to ventilate them because petrol and diesel fumes are denser than air, so if there is a spill, there will be a risk of asphyxiation. I doubt Tom is at any risk since he will be working on farm equipment, not cars.
I thought a direct driller only needed a small ish tractor for the size of the drill. The quadtrac is for heavy tillage, which I didn’t think you do…….. what would it do ? With no PTO, tracks like that, could be a money pit !!!
I would of thought it is Radon gas you are thinking of, you can see if your area is a high risk by looking on the Radon maps online Pretty sure with the rocky subsoil Tom should be ok
Gasses from fuel, welding etc. can also collect. A fan would be great but you can also purge the pit with an air line. Not sure what current HSE regs would be though.

It would be perfectly legal to sell the barley in the heap to someone knowing that they were going to drill it, but not the treated stuff in the bags.
