I see nothing wrong with this. This guy provides honest consumer points for a long time taking minimum ads, obviously he had the 1st gen trailer and now he may be getting a discount for providing content on the next. Its UA-cam, these toys don't come free. When passionate about something that would be a perfect sales man.
Firstly love your videos Jason, can’t wait for the next one. I enjoyed the in depth review of the Turtle Back as we don’t have them in Australia, so always great to see other innovations. I do agree with some of the comments regarding transparency, I find most guys I follow and trust will be upfront and generally preface their reviews with if they’ve received support from the company they are reviewing ie, free or discounted product. I’ve found that kind of transparency such as, “They gave this to me but it’s that good I’d spend my own money on it” makes the review and the reviewer more believable...to me anyway. Sorry for the length of comment, can’t wait to see more of your reviews 👍
One of the most comprehensive walk around I have seen. You can see the quality. I would have one in a heart beat. But my wife wont climb a ladder to go to bed. So us old farts have to go with the teardrop style. I just wish they made one of those
Thank you! Believe me, I understand! You should probably of look at one of their lower height ones and a trailer tent. The sleeping platform is closer to waist height and the ladder is more like steps.
I actually built a 4x8 off-road teardrop last summer. We love it. I am planning on building another hopefully this summer that will be 5x8. Just a touch bigger sleeping area. After seeing your video and the construction of the doors that turtleback make, I hope to be able to contact them about buying a couple side cabinets and mount them on my build. Not sure if they would sell them or not. But when I am ready we will see.
It was super cool running into you last night at the grocery store. Both my sons are super jealous that they didn’t get to say hi too. We all love your channel and appreciate all the hard work you put into your content! Mad respect :)
I think it will be better if the burner can slide away to the left somehow so that people can access the pantry above to access their items. The way it sits right now, it's very inconvenient to access any items in the pantry while you cook.
Great informative video. Thanks for the effort putting it together. I have an RV and I have always wondered why companied give you so many 12v outlets. I would trade every 12 v for a USB any day. I have been camping for many years and have never needed to utilize more than one at a time. My 2016 tundra has 3x 12v and only 1usb. GREAT VID!
I have watched this video three times and have not figured out why no one talks about the refrigerator, why isn't it in the kitchen? why is it an option and why would you put it upfront away from the kitchen?
Just some food for thought: add a line to mount a secondary master switch that turns on/off all exterior lighting simultaneously to the inside of your tent. This way, while your in one of your most vulnerable states (sleeping), gaining situational awareness via instantly illuminating your environment 360 degrees would be simple. Just in case it’s dark and you hear something go bump in the night.
Jason Koertge, oh thank goodness! I love that you carry, me too. But as you may know already, 9mm (or any sidearm) holds the potential to not be effective, depending on the threat of course. I tend to carry the smallest possible defense tool for the given environment. If I’m entering territory where there’s a high likelihood of running into a bear, I’ll bring along at least a 30 caliber. I’m aware that 9mm is slightly larger than 7.62, but the ogive, FPS and powder load can potentially suffice to keep you and your family safe. I imagine I’m not telling you anything new, just offering a reminder. Just last summer during a camping trip, I ended up 20’ away from a relatively small black bear in the middle of the night with no moonlight. I sure was happy I decided to bring my rifle with an illuminated reticle optic combined with a mounted Surefire flashlight. Long story short, the bear and I both scared the shit out of each other, and I’m so happy I was not required to hurt it in order to make sure I didn’t get hurt. She saw the light and ran away. To sum up, I’d like you to remain safe for various reasons. But I just found your channel randomly and subscribed, I’d love for you to be around for a bit more so I can enjoy your installments. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share all that you do so freely! Stay safe out there, bud
I like that idea too, they should come standard in all of these trailers, gain some visibility in case of an emergency. I would specially appreciate that when you travel with little ones.
Great walkthrough!! We actually got to meet some of the Turtleback herd out in Death Valley last weekend. After seeing the Expedition set ups, my wife and I may be upgrading from out getaway trail when our kids get older. Another reason to get one is that not only do you get an awesome trailer but you get to join a community of really awesome individuals who love these trailers and share the same overland passion you do. Btw Expo west is waiting for you Jason, make it happen. 😁
So happy for you bro. I am super stoked for u and ur family. Keep up the good work. If you haven't yet do a video on how you keep cool during the summer months in the Panhandle while tent camping
Thank you!! I don’t tent camp in Florida (or try not to) in the summer. Just way too hot. But when it’s gonna warmer, I’ll run a 12v fan in the tent - keeps the air moving.
Excellent video. While I could personally not afford a Turtleback I appreciate their craftsmanship. Also, stealing little ideas from them for my DIY trailer build.
The material that your shelves are made out of is called star board in the Marine World. It's good stuff. The excellent water pressure you have for your sink is due to the accumulator tank in your potable water system.
I dig this setup!! Need to ditch my '12 Ram 2500 and get back into a Toyota! This is my dream setup for Nor-Cal deer hunting and taking the family out. Not sure the runner could handle my boat, but I think I need that Turtleback instead.
Literally first video I've seen of yours and genuinely enjoyed it! I found the turtleback trailers instagram and have been more and more curious as to what they can do and if they are the worth the money! From this video... you're already selling me on a lot of things! This is awesome man, keep it up! Just subscribed too!
Just a heads up, I'll be asking questions as I keep watching. :) I'm only 15m in and plan to watch it all. So question 1, when using the sink, where does the water drain to? Does it dump or is there a gray water reservoir?
In the video you indicated that the Partner Steel Cook stove was the 22” inch version. When I reached out to Turtleback they said that version does not fit in their trailers, only the 18” version as indicated on their website. Does your trailer actually have the 22” version?
Hey Jason, curious if you have any comments on Turtleback after having one for a few years. I’ve heard of issues with the water sloshing causing rocking, problems with their custom suspension bouncing a lot, etc. Any helpful comments would be appreciated!
I've seen your comments on a few 4x4 related videos, and they are always positive. I'm used to seeing the same guys going around and trashing most videos.
I'm getting a Denali Pioneer EV on October 27th, driving from St Louis to Chattanooga. What is the distance from the base of the floor to the ground. I plan on modifying my trailer on Friday October 20th. I had planned on 65 inches from ground to floor. My garage door is 81 1/2". 65 + 15 (tent) will put me at 81". If I don't need to go to 65", I'd rather not.
I am thinking seriously about buying that trailer and I have several questions since I have been comparing this one with another one that is metal. I advance you that in terms of quality and price, I think this is a better alternative for us. It strikes me that the big door, where the kitchen is bent. Is it a problem of the quality of the material or external factors? Have you already tried it in the rain? From your experience, do you consider that it is necessary to do some kind of special maintenance?, Do you recommend doing something to the suspension?.
Thank you this is so cool never saw a tent trailer like this never heard of overlanding watching you pick this up inspired me but, this video may have changed my life. I'd like to have a conversation with you about this.
Yeah, the one I've been using was a used weekender I bought from them that was from their rental fleet. When I reached out to Dave last summer he made me an offer I couldn't refuse that got me a trailer within days and allowed me to land in the 2018 model with all the upgrades including the independent ICON / Hypercoil suspension (which is what has delayed my delivery).
Yea but what if you need to do some 4x4ing on your 4x4 trip? Simply bolt on the Power Tortoise 150cc Trailer Dolly ($1299.99) to the rear receiver of the Turtle Top. Then when you have to wheel you can disconnect, then tow your trailer completely separate from the main trailer! Also available in fall 2020, the Turtle Top Galapagos. This revolutionary micro trailer is a 20 foot swimming pool equipped with a fold-out high-dive and hot tub attachment! ($9999.999)
Jason if you come up with a good way to optimize the pass through front storage area please do a video on it. We have a 2015 model and I still haven't figured out how to get the most out of that space.
If it honestly doesn't have a fridge slide it's a complete fail. However it's entirely possible he specifically didn't want one due to having a fridge in his tow vehicle.
You mention how quickly the stove will boil water but I have three opposite problem with my Coleman. I can't dial it down very well to lower heat for cooking eggs or pancakes or whatever. How well can you dial down the heat?
So, over all. How much does this rig cost? Is there something similar in europe or are they shipping? :D This trailer is way more fun than an ordinary caravan and much easier than going with a roof tent only.
Personally I like the 23 zero tent.Your mildew issue before, probably less probable with the 23 zero. Don't get me wrong!I'm going to Phoenix this summer just to see the Turtle back trailer.
@@SwellRunner Thanks for your funny answer. Do you consider the CVT a tent "4 sessions"? I am mainly interested in their resistance to rain, wind and snow. Do you have some experience in these situations that you want to share?
Jason Koertge no no lol just that he couldn't remember the full name, thought it was funny. But he ended up remembering. While I have the chance, I should mention HDPE also comes in different colors and with different textures. It's extremely easy to work with, no different than how you cut or drill wood. You can also weld HDPE which is really nice. But there are no adhesives that work well with it. A heat gun and some HDPE welding rod and you can fabricate some really cool stuff. HDPE showing up in the overlanding community is a no brainer as it's used for marine applications, decking, seats, panels, pretty much anything plastic exposed to the elements. It's a really great and easy to work with material. We've even seen people start to use it for outdoor backyard kitchens and porches. In natural grade (uncolored) it's fda approved for food contact and it's what plastic cutting boards are made from.
djisar, aren’t there some personal protection type manufacturers using poly ethylene in pretty heavily for body armor applications where weight savings is priority?
How much did it cost? Did you finance? What's the monthly and did you go through turtleback? What is your rate? Did you get a decent return on the last one you sold?
I think it is a wonderful product but (you know the but is coming) the kitchen needs to be all stainless steel and it needs independent adjustable suspension.
Wow, awesome trailer. I am debating weather or not I need a trailer. It would be super nice but do I need it? It is so sweet though. My Overlanding partner, my 14 year old Son, says YES! Nice video Jason.
Great video. Very informative on the features of the Turtleback. Have you been able to organize your setup yet? Maybe a follow-up vlog about that as well.
I'm liking the innovation, a lot of great ideas. Coming from an Australian view point, we have a lot of Camp trailer R&D over here, There are a couple things I would consider essentials that are missing. Firstly, Independent suspension, for when you're well caught in the wombat holes (axle twisters). Secondly, A fridge?! How do you keep your beers cold? Thirdly, integrated solar, it's definitely a premium option, but the sun is free so take the most advantage of it! Following on from this, lastly, a hardshell RTT. The fold out designs take too long to set up, the bags are really inconvenient, and a hard shell tent allows for that solar panel integration.
I guess the obvious question is does it have a fridge?! It seems amazing otherwise. Would love to see the awning and the shower setup as well but this thing definitely needs a way to keep food cold. It's to cool to have to resort to using a cooler for your food.
I refuse to believe it doesn't have a fridge slide, the cheapest nastiest Campers have fridge slides. I'm thinking he keeps his fridge in his tow vehicle and deliberately had them leave it out.
Lead Crystal batts are a better choice for many. Though lithium batts generally store more power for the size they are substantially more expensive. I chose lead crystal deep cycles because they absorb power far quicker than lithium. This means I can get a full charge a lot quicker. My Jeep has two batteries, while my off road trailer has one. When all 3 batteries get depleted and I run my engine they charge quickly, this means I run the motor less and my alternators doesn't need to work as hard.
Have you ever considered the Patriot X3, or the Opus OP4? I'm in the market, and those two were high on my list, Turtleback seems nice, just wondering how it stacks up versus these two?
As a Australian I'm incredibly biased but the truth is Aussie Campers are miles ahead. Americans are great at the "mansion on wheels" type RVs & caravans but for true offgrid/off-road capability? I'd honestly argue 9 of the worlds best 10 camper trailers are from Australia.
@@rogdedodge7258 Totally agree, which 9 of the world's best are from Australia? Zone? Kedron? Patriot? Lifestyle Campers? Really curious which ones you like? Thanks!
David Strong I'm strictly talking camper trailers but here goes starting with the $$$$ no option level. Patriot...Bruder...ICONN...Ultimate. $$$$ count options Cub Campers, Goldfields Campers, Marlin Campers, Opus. I'm broke but wanna have a go options. Mars Campers & Black Series won't last forever and you'll need to option it out but they do a job for a low price. Opus, Patriot, Bruder (I think) and Black Series are available in the states.
@@rogdedodge7258 Zone RV is coming to the states, will be here in 2021, Lifestyle Campers is also going to be here in 2021 with their RECONN R2 and R4.
David Strong Yes when I say ICONN I meant Lifestyle and their Reconns. I really like them but lean more towards Patriots or the Ultimate range because I'm downunder and it doesn't get that cold here so canvas isn't a problem. I think Reconns will kill it over there, especially the "enclosed bunker" designs, you could heat them very efficiently & the female solo market will like the security of being able to lock yourself in for the night. Let me know what you end up getting into.
It's great the US are closing the gap on Aussie made campers. You've always made great "mansion on wheels" type caravans and RVs but the true offgrid/off-road trailers have been kinda pathetic. This is changing.
Am I looking at a $80,000+ expense to go camping? Wow! I am sure it is great for that kind of money!! I am close to the other end of vehicle-supported adventure, which gives me the adventure without the huge expense. I ride a 250cc Yamaha wr250r dual-sport motorcycle with a couple of waterproof bags, a tiny one-person tent, tiny stove... It is a one-person, 300 lb, 80 mpg, $5k setup that can take me absolutely anywhere. Definitely not for family vacations, but I enjoy doing this type of exploration with a riding buddy. I am 60 and close to retirement and I am planning to get an '08-'09 4runner, build a platform bed inside and use it to travel with my wife to the West. That would be a poor man's overlanding rig! I had no idea that there is an entire industry built around over-the-top camping in the wilderness.
Very nice rig! But damn, close to $30K price point for the base and it doesn't come with the tent, awning, etc??? That's pretty steep, but price is set by what the market will bear...
Hey, please do a video with the 200 series landcruiser you got your wife. Do like a review of it and give us your opinion on various things about it. Thanks.
Turtleback Trailers, yeah but that’s a really solid, fairly off-grid, mobile off-road capable unit with many creature comforts we’ve come to know very well in a first world country. And let’s face it, none of us are getting any younger, those creature comforts look to be well worth the investment. Shit, I’d rather buy this than a cheap 30k house!
Fantastic with all that is included. It would help if while you are discussing a feature show us the feature not your face (lol) just talking about it. did we ever get to see the water heater and all that the shelves hold besides an angle far away view. kindof missed the tour.
I was impressed with that trailer no doubt it is definitely the best American made trailer however I disagree with you when you say it is hands down the best. IMO this trailer is still not on the level of a Patriot camper especially now that they have released the X1-N. That model is in direct competition price with with the Turtleback.
New to your channel. Just curious about something...do you have a stiff neck in this video because I noticed that instead of turning your head to look at the camera or at the guy you are talking to you turn your whole body. Just concerned that it might be something you need to get checked out.
Put them side by side and do a comparison, I think you might have a change of opinion. Do a little more research, it’ll be worth your efforts. The Turtleback is designed and built for North America on many levels
I think the Patriot X1 is a better camper. Stronger and better built, quicker setup and has independent self levelling suspension which is much better than the solid axle on this thing... this wouldn’t survive in Australia.
Exactly what I was thinking. I got here researching Patriot Campers. The Patriot looks far more better, smaller/Compact. I was watching him pull the back draws out on anther video, the looked very stiff. Still looks like a cool trailer. But I don’t think he is right with saying it’s the best Trailer on the market. I doubt it would stack up to the X1. It might be the best trailer for its pay point.

bratolli this. Thank you. Stuff ain‘t for free... People seem to forget that.
Finally US quality that resembles Australia...well done TB
The American mentality to this stuff is slowly changing.
Great video, well done. I'm convinced this is the way I want to go camping and exploring. 👍 Those trailers are seriously nicely built!
i went to the factory. real nice people and great deals
Solid video Jason. Thanks for taking the time with Kevin to go through this. I look forward to seeing these trailers at EXPO EAST this year.
Excellent vid and thanks to you and Kevin for doing such a detailed overview of a very impressive trailer.

Jason, what brand of solar panels (if any) are you using to charge your batteries?
I guess they would have an upgrade to lithium ion batteries in 2020? Amazing video!
OK, it's been a year. What do you think? What upgrades did you add, what items don't you use?
What kind of editing software do you use. Looking to upgrade. Thanks
Cool trailer. I miss a place for the fridge in the kitchen area.
Yeah, I was thinking about that all the time... and now he is going to pull a drawer and it will be a fridge/freezer from Engel or something.
That's what I'm wondering, where is the fridge?
yep deal breaker for me . X2 for me
Where is the fridge? Smittybilt scout trailer for me.
If it honestly doesn't have a fridge slide it's a complete fail. However it's entirely possible he specifically didn't want one due to having a fridge in his tow vehicle.
Curious about how the trailer gets 12V power for the charger. Is it extra cabling, or does it get it through the 7-pin?
Through the 7 pin
You mention how quickly the stove will boil water but I have three opposite problem with my Coleman. I can't dial it down very well to lower heat for cooking eggs or pancakes or whatever. How well can you dial down the heat?
Greg Macklem maybe have a look at either the Eureka! Spire or Spire LX. They have the best simmer control of any camp stove I’ve seen.
One Man Trail will check those out. Thanks.

Personally I like the 23 zero tent.Your mildew issue before, probably less probable with the 23 zero.
Don't get me wrong!I'm going to Phoenix this summer just to see the Turtle back trailer.
Agreed, the 23Zero is a superior product, CVT has better marketing than their actual product delivers.
Can we get this in Australia...??
I have a practical question about the use of a "roof top tent" in the trailer. Do not pass to the smell of food if you use it on the trailer ?.
Usually its not an issue. BUT, the other day the smell of maple bacon took a while to go away. I couldn’t decide if I liked that or not. Haha
@@SwellRunner Thanks for your funny answer. Do you consider the CVT a tent "4 sessions"? I am mainly interested in their resistance to rain, wind and snow.
Do you have some experience in these situations that you want to share?
Looks like a really nice trailer, my question is if the greasy fumes from the kitchen get in the tent and make it all nasty?
As someone in the plastics industry, I laughed so hard at 19:54
Did we totally screw it’s up??
Charles Coffman - possible but nothing I'm involved with. Our bullet and impact resistant plastics are special formulations of polycarbonate or PMMA
djisar, ah ha...now my memory kicking in...lol
How much did it cost? Did you finance? What's the monthly and did you go through turtleback? What is your rate? Did you get a decent return on the last one you sold?
They are happy to share numbers. And I’m happy to share details offline as well.
What about that sweet 23 Zero tent. I need a tent
I think it is a wonderful product but (you know the but is coming) the kitchen needs to be all stainless steel and it needs independent adjustable suspension.
Felix Torres, when I first read this I thought, “now why would the kitchen area need its own suspension system?”...lol
Charles Coffman No no I meant the suspension system.
Wow, awesome trailer. I am debating weather or not I need a trailer. It would be super nice but do I need it? It is so sweet though. My Overlanding partner, my 14 year old Son, says YES! Nice video Jason.
turtleback should do cellphone boosters on the rig. with WiFi integration.
Just camp at Starbucks
Aaah this looks awesome!
Thank you!
Great video. Where do you keep your clothing and fridge?
Great video. Very informative on the features of the Turtleback. Have you been able to organize your setup yet? Maybe a follow-up vlog about that as well.
Have you ever considered using a lens with a bit less of the fisheye effect? Great videos! Love them all.
What is the dry weight of your trailer as shown in the video?
1900#
Stove sounds very loud but understand that may be the consequence of it being heard on camera.
Great video and happy to see Lifestyle Overland backing you up. WHERE does the water drain from the sink? What are your solutions?
Run a hose from sink to a 20ltr container of some type and then you can use that grey water for putting out camp fires...or worse.
What combinations of cameras and editing software do you use? Love the channel and keep up the good work brother 👌🏻
What is the reason for not using lithium batteries?
Lead Crystal batts are a better choice for many. Though lithium batts generally store more power for the size they are substantially more expensive. I chose lead crystal deep cycles because they absorb power far quicker than lithium. This means I can get a full charge a lot quicker. My Jeep has two batteries, while my off road trailer has one. When all 3 batteries get depleted and I run my engine they charge quickly, this means I run the motor less and my alternators doesn't need to work as hard.
turtle lights? after 2 x watching and extra, still dont know what they are. Super vid anyway tnx
But, where is the AR-15 mount? Sweet rig, brother!
Emanuel Goldstein, hidden...because they’re in California. Lol. Really though, I do wonder if Jason hunts or plinks.
Excellent video and tremendous product. Any thoughts on solar?
$$$$ count options
Cub Campers, Goldfields Campers, Marlin Campers, Opus.
Still waiting for the shower scene! :-)
Haha. Coming from a hot desert near you!
Oh shit man this my doctor xD
Jason it's not a trailer sidebox, it's a mobile standing desk. Haha jk... sorta.
I can afford one, but now I want to build something similar...
Hey, please do a video with the 200 series landcruiser you got your wife. Do like a review of it and give us your opinion on various things about it. Thanks.
Hey jason if you ever make a trip to michigan id love do an overland trip with you in the U.P. and drummond island. Let me know
How much was the trailer with all the option?
bmwproboi05 he sold one of his kids
His trailer is in the lower $30s
Turtleback Trailers, yeah but that’s a really solid, fairly off-grid, mobile off-road capable unit with many creature comforts we’ve come to know very well in a first world country. And let’s face it, none of us are getting any younger, those creature comforts look to be well worth the investment. Shit, I’d rather buy this than a cheap 30k house!
Price as shown in your video??
High $20's, not including the tent.
Trailer weight and tong weight ? Looks big and heavy.
New to your channel. Just curious about something...do you have a stiff neck in this video because I noticed that instead of turning your head to look at the camera or at the guy you are talking to you turn your whole body. Just concerned that it might be something you need to get checked out.
I love the trailer and the tent but the guy is annoying.
WHAT DOES IT COST?????
I’m at 10 minutes waiting for the walk around. He talks a lot. Gave up. Gonna look for another walk around. My goodness that’s a lot of blah blah.
You know, you can skip forward.
Hmmm, Turtle back vs. Patriot Trailers?
Patriot is better but costs more. Get what you pay for kinda thing
yes, Patriot cost more and is a far better unit, you are right, get what you pay for.
Sweet shit
You didn’t talk about the shower!
I know!!!
Trying to talk the wife into getting one so I need all the details Jason lol
And the price?
Cost?
did not go over the shower? integrate a toilet that mounts over a tire with a awning room and you have me sold!
