I believe he merely meant the shell, rather than the core itself, since the core clearly has BEST written on it. IIRC, LPL's main complaints with Masterlock are toward the easily pickable cores housed in an otherwise very sturdy housing. For this lock, it's obvious they swapped out the core, so there's nothing left to say.
if you listen to Deviant Ollam's stories about keys, you'll find way more things all use the same key, not just the same type of key but the same bidding too, then you'd think. so I'm not to surprised here. from the sounds of what LPL said I think all those "Green construction" locks use the same key from the factory. so if you go and buy one of those locks yourself, you then have the keys to pretty much everyone else's locks.
@@666Tomato666 And except for the locks that have obvious and well-known low/no skill bypass attacks, they're probably still mostly good enough for their intended applications. Then there's me. I just made keys for my green construction cores by looking at the cuts on his keys. Saved me the time of pulling them apart and decoding it. Thanks LPL! 😀
MasterLock often makes nice lock bodies for their higher end stuff. They have yet to figure out how to make a core out of another material than butter...

@@johndododoe1411 much like construction equipment shares one key across the entire brand, or golf carts, or ATVs... Have I mentioned how easy it is to get these keys also?
@@johndododoe1411 Pretty much. You have to match the key to the brand of core, as not all construction cores are the same. But as long as you can identify the brand, you can find and buy the master key. Its more of a deterrent than anything else, the lock is hard to break and most people don't know about the master key. And only select people at the construction company has the master key to begin with, the foremen, any master tradesmen, the company owner, common laborer will not have a key.
@@lukasperuzovic1429 actually as long as its the same format. Multiple companys make small standardized interchangeable cores, and they are also keyed and ordered just like any other lock.
If you invite LPL to your house and you're not there in time, he'll just let himself in with an exact copy of your key he just happened to have in his collection.
He showed us his collection of precut Kwikset keys in a previous video. I once rented a place and the landlord pulled out a similar set of keys. Tried each one and handed us the one that worked. I handed him the rent check and changed the locks.
Omg thank you. I've been pretty much starring at it in disbelief that I couldn't find the key. I didn't even know the core was a construction one, too lol. Thanks again, though. You always amaze me with the things you do on this channel.
You should show your collection if you haven't already I can't even imagine how it must be organized based off how structured clear and concise your videos are
I thought that was odd too, but my guess is he might be contractually obligated to keep that secret. Probably a condition of purchasing the control key in the first place.
I think this is a bit more like finding a post-it note on their fridge saying "Facebook password: pASSword1". It's a little secure, and did require the right tool... that tool was just painfully easy to find and apply.
T'was not the only time. He complimented this line of locks before as "enough for lower security applications" ua-cam.com/video/2b4fVFPyEBM/v-deo.html and even called their shackles "really not something for which I fault masterlock" when he busted them open with hydraulic bolt cutters (ua-cam.com/video/ICudP7-FxVw/v-deo.html)
This is the truest example of keeping honest people honest. If construction locks are so widely used and standardized, I would think this gives almost no protection for someone who knows their way around a construction site.
When you're talking about a construction lock, the entire idea is that people see a lock without realizing that absolutely everyone has a key. In a large project with multiple Foreman there could easily be 10 people with this key. Most construction site theft is internal, because... To abuse a meme that came out last year... Only a construction worker would still work boots. The tools and equipment in a construction site are extraordinarily valuable... But only to a construction worker. Honestly even the higher value things would be extraordinarily hard to find someone to buy. Most pawn shops simply don't know what to do with a large air compressor for example. These keys are simply to keep the local teenagers from deciding that your building project is the local party house.
Watching this channel actually helped me out. I finally got into this box that had some old Duel Master cards in it and I had lost the key a few years ago. Picked it open and finally got those cards back. Just to find the key for it a couple hours later on top of my desk.
Me: He's going to pick it with something from his website... LPL: I actually have two keys for this lock. Me: Call M. Night Shamylan... THat's how you do a plot twist.
Those Best/SFIC cores also have what I call "Core Tools" which are like black barrels with a T grip on the end that can operate the empty lock body if there is no core installed. They usually ship with the handleset so that doors can be operated before a core is installed. There are 2 styles that I know of, a version with a metal blade on the end and a plastic version with holes that engage 2 pins inside the lock. Very helpful to keep on one's keychain.
I’ve worked on multiple job sites and just check the windows before trying to pick a lock and break inside. People are lazy and leave them unlocked all the time.
PAC ought not to do that. They be best to stick to development of novel security devices, and let others screw themselves up. Master would never take that approach on a competitor. Kind of goes outside fierce competition. C;mon PAC... really? Make more things like skateboards... that was cool.

I wouldn't say I remember everything he says, but I'm sure it gets stored away in my brain somewhere and for that I am grateful. Thanks.
If I am not mistaken, that was a BEST core and can be used in a variety of locks and lockset (door knobs). For those that don't know, construction cores are used to keep unauthorized honest workers from going into the wrong rooms or areas of a building while under construction. If you don't have the correct key, you are probably in the wrong spot. On a construction site, there are plenty of tools that can just cut the lock or the latch therefore it depends on the workers respecting the locked areas. Construction cores can also go into the final finished installed doors and deadbolts. As the LPL stated, once the building is formerly turned over to the owner, the cores are changed and construction workers no longer have access.
Not precisely, the lock body itself is pretty good is what he's complimenting. The core it comes with is legitimately intended to be replaced with somethin better. This technically makes it one of the better Masterlock products.

Love those BEST cores, as head of security at my old job, those things were pretty sweet to control who had access to what, easy to swap out if someone lost a key, & easy to add more cores to the system if additional doors were added.
I appreciate the way you went about making this video. You could have picked it like any other lock but instead you chose to educate us on how this interchangeable core mechanism works along with the color coding system.
Reminds me of something that a rail flagger mentioned on a site recently. Generally if you buy locks in bulk, they tend to be keyed the same as every other lock from that location. So LOTOs and alot of locks used by big corporations (such as canadian national railway, in this case) are keyed exactly the same

LPL: Gives Masterlock credit
Masterlock: "Green key fit in green lock!!"
that was a "best" branded core, so you can not really blame master for the cores customers insert.
Somebody has to make the security systems for old videogames.

to be fair, he commonly gives Masterlock credit for the build quality of their padlocks, it's the locking mechanism that's always lacking
@@666Tomato666 And except for the locks that have obvious and well-known low/no skill bypass attacks, they're probably still mostly good enough for their intended applications. I make no claim to be an expert in crime, but if 0.5% of thefts involved the perpetrator actually picking the lock, I'd be shocked.
Then there's me. I just made keys for my green construction cores by looking at the cuts on his keys. Saved me the time of pulling them apart and decoding it. Thanks LPL! 😀
I legit did that for an orange construction core I had, worked great :D
"I want to give MasterLock credit for a fairly nice lock."
I think I just saw a couple of pigs fly over my house.
MasterLock often makes nice lock bodies for their higher end stuff. They have yet to figure out how to make a core out of another material than butter...
yeah they got launched by a MasterLock mortar
it's a lock that you can take the MasterLock core out of, which is probably a huge plus in LPL's eyes :)
This made me giggle
Hell (Michigan) froze back in January
Owner: "I hate to have to tell you guys this, but we're closing shop. The foreman locked all the equipment up, problem was everybody in town had a key to the lock!"
I'm guessing everyone in the US construction industry has "the green construction key".
I've picked scissor lifts with a screwdriver
@@lukasperuzovic1429 actually as long as its the same format. Multiple companys make small standardized interchangeable cores, and they are also keyed and ordered just like any other lock.
If you invite LPL to your house and you're not there in time, he'll just let himself in with an exact copy of your key he just happened to have in his collection.
True xD
He showed us his collection of precut Kwikset keys in a previous video. I once rented a place and the landlord pulled out a similar set of keys. Tried each one and handed us the one that worked. I handed him the rent check and changed the locks.

I love SFIC cores... I also just happen to have construction cores and keys lol
Someone send TLPL a key and let him find a lock for it. I guess he'll have one....
Omg thank you. I've been pretty much starring at it in disbelief that I couldn't find the key. I didn't even know the core was a construction one, too lol. Thanks again, though. You always amaze me with the things you do on this channel.

I thought the "now you're just showing off" was just what he normally did in each video. I now see that there are levels of showing off even for LPL.
This was a "over 9000" level show off, imo.
I'm amazed by the fact how he hides the bitting of the control key so not everyone runs around with those.
@@ruben307 He would have done that intentionally.
Since that key is less common and it can remove the core.
you still can found the control key pictures online , and that is enough for getting the bitting I guess
I thought that was odd too, but my guess is he might be contractually obligated to keep that secret. Probably a condition of purchasing the control key in the first place.
you can buy them at www.atlanticlock.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=3_21 both operating and control for many colors
This kind of attack is like "hacking" into someones facebook by guessing that their password is "password"

I think this is a bit more like finding a post-it note on their fridge saying "Facebook password: pASSword1". It's a little secure, and did require the right tool... that tool was just painfully easy to find and apply.
shit I am going to change my p4$$w0rd
Actually it’s more like leaving your router password as “admin”
I bet LPL has a key for every single lock in the world. He just prefers Picking them because the keychain is too heavy to walk around with.
Since I started locksporting, I've now started on a second keyring to the locks that I've picked. I've learned so much from this lock god.
never thought can have that much fun with locks, passion could lead u everywhere. thanks alot!
I like how the only time LPL complimented a masterlock was in a situation where the core wasn't even theirs
Well, at least this lock does pretty much what it's designed to do and you could swap the core for something more secure. Not a bad job for Master
This is the truest example of keeping honest people honest. If construction locks are so widely used and standardized, I would think this gives almost no protection for someone who knows their way around a construction site.
But construction sites are guarded 24/7.
@@p_serdiuk not always
@@p_serdiuk Not sure where you're from but I rarely see construction sites with guards unless it's a pretty enormous project
@@leechowning2712 Yeah its more a safety and liability issue, not theft.
“I have keys for all of these including the control keys”

Me: He's going to pick it with something from his website...
LPL: I actually have two keys for this lock.
Me: Call M. Night Shamylan... THat's how you do a plot twist.
He inferred he had the key in the title, that'd be like Shyamalan naming "The Sixth Sense" something like "Maybe he's a ghost the whole time"
@@montgomeryfitzpatrick473 it's not weird that he used the key. It is very weird that he didn't also pick it.
Technically, he did use something from his website. He sells Green Construction Core keys
"Help LPL, I don't have the key to this lock"
"Well, I do lol"
So does this mean that LPL is sending the lock back to the person who sent it in with a LPL upgraded core?!?! That would be awesome.
It's like one of those game mechanics where you have to find a corresponding color key to a colour lock

The point is that lots of contractors have that key on their key ring.

"I want to give MasterLock credit for a fairly nice lock."
Me: he is roasting them, right?
I was still waiting for the punch line. But ended up in disappointment.
You see. It was a back handed complement. He pretty much says "you have a pretty face"
For a reasonably cheap lock with easily interchangeable cores (to much more secure ones) it is not a bad offer from Master Lock.
Still counts as a valid insert, given the fact that the cores are not master lock cores
Not precisely, the lock body itself is pretty good is what he's complimenting. The core it comes with is legitimately intended to be replaced with somethin better. This technically makes it one of the better Masterlock products.
I’ll just assume from now on that he knows everything possible about every lock to infinity & beyond
Had you not gathered that by now? 😂
